Slow game speed

I'm in my 13th season on my current save and its got to the point where the game is really slow moving fom one day to the next.
I've got about 6 leagues running as well as having put a couple leagues on and off over the course of the save.

I understand its probably to do with the player numbers and history thats being saved but my question is, is there any way to alter the settings to speed up the game such as switching off 'retain player history after retirement'? I'm sure that was an option somewhere but i cant find it.

Have you defragmented your hard drive recently? If you have I'd recommend not loading a couple of leagues.
