Slow Network Games

A few weeks ago I was in a network game but left after being told that it was me playing on Steam that was stopping the game working/making it really slow.

Is there anyway I can stop this "slowness" becuase of Steam or can I do something to make it faster whilst playing on steam (i.e. only play with other people who use steam)?

Also, how fast can it go? Has anyone ever played a network game which is just as fast as offline?

I have played one with my mate and it was pretty quick, not as quick as playing on your own....You need a very good machine to to reap the benefits...and the settings need to be changed too
