This is the first manager story I will be writing so please forgive me if my layout isn't the best. Feel free to tell me how I can improve my layout, any additional pieces of information that may be helpful.

Ok, so with the world cup on show, and with nations like Chile and Colombia impressing me, combined with the fact that I was thinking of doing a journeyman game, I decided to start a journeyman game in South America, but with a semi-professional playing past. I felt it would take me years to get a job in South America as an English Sunday league footballer.

All leagues were loaded, at the time of starting the game, I hadn't downloaded the files to add the other South American Leagues, so the playable leagues are:

Yes, I've got the English League... in case I change my mind on the challenge or get bored and want a change, plus I want to follow Arsenal

I started a month ago and I am now at 2022 so my first posts will be recaps, and sadly I didnt document those past years so there may be things I miss out accidentally or just because I simply cannot remember. I am by no means finished with this save. In fact it still feels like it's barely started. Feel free to ask questions about anything you want me to go into more detail on.

So, let's begin

BRIEF RECAP
Join Atenas de San Carlos in the Uruguayan Second Division in December 2013. They have 8 points in 10 games
Finish as so:

FULL STORY - I've only done up to 2016 in the full story so far
I go on holiday mode and apply to everything, I recall I was a bit too demanding in interviews so i wasn't given the job after a few interviews. In December 2013, I was given an interview by Atenas de San Carlos in the Uruguayan Second Division and I said I was willing to have an even smaller transfer and wage budget and got the job!

View attachment 356499

Founded in 1928, the only honours to their name are 4 interior zone (3rd tier) wins in 1965, 1975, 1976 and 2001

My budget was as so if i remember correctly
Wage Budget 5k
Transfer budget 10k

The clubs finances were also not the best, and i did ask for this.

We were 2nd from bottom at the time of taking over, 8 points in 10 games and our task was to make the play offs!!!!! I quickly realised that there were 14 teams and to get into the playoffs you needed to finish in the top 10 which was within reach. Oh and 14th place is relegated.

Things did not get off to a good start with a 4-2 loss to bottom side Central Español who then went on 8 points leaving me bottom. I proceeded to draw 0-0 and lose 1-0 twice, ending 2013 on 9 points in 13 games and deep in the relegation zone.

So not the best of starts. Then there was a slight break, and with the transfer window open, I put it to use. Big offers came in for my players, I ended up selling 4 players for a total of 580k. I then replaced them with 3 players; Mathias Mohozzo, Jurandir da Silva and Juan Pablo Lopez on frees, which got the club on a stable financial footing.

I had 3 friendlies to sort my team out and that i did. I started by getting 9 points from a possible 12, catapulting us out of the relegation zone and putting us in the mix for the playoff places with 18 points from 17 games. But then I started to get put in my place with a more mixed run of games. Fast-forward 6 games and I had won 2, drawn 1 and lost 3. Putting me on 25 points from 23 games and 11th place with anyone from 8th to 13th able to swap places.

The teams I had left were my first team I ever faced,
Central Español, Rocha FC and Boston River, all teams in that band from 8th to 13th or just above that. Well, Central Español certainly proved not to be relegation battlers with a good 2nd half of a season leaving them in the low 30s in terms of points. But this was different to the first game, I knew my players and they were playing better than then so I felt pretty confident of a win. Unfortunately we lost 3-1. However, I could see that winning my last 2 games left me with a good chance of reaching the playoffs.

However I drew 1-1 to Rocha leaving me on 26 points in 25 games and my dream of a playoff was gone. I checked the table and I was 14th!! 12th place were on 29 points and 13th were on 26 points so it looked like this.

Position Points GD GS
12th 29 -7 20
13th 26 -8 22
14th 26 -9 26

I still felt that both teams wouldn't win so as long as I won, I would survive. However, I felt a draw may even be enough.

I was winning 1-0, when in the 90th minute, Boston River equalised. So I finishing on 27 points. But was it enough? Well 12th place lost 1-0 so a win would have been enough to survive. And agonisingly, 13th drew 1-1, equalising fairly late leaving the table like this:

View attachment 356498

4 points between 10th and 14th... and more annoyingly Boston River were Promoted through the playoffs!!

In the end here were all of my results, starting with the highlighted game:

View attachment 356497

So this left me with a club relegated to an unplayable league.... so I was sacked. I thought i did ok, in the 2nd half of the season, when i got to see my players fully, I picked up 19 points, which if replicated in the first half, would have put me comfortably in the playoffs. At this point I was worried I wouldn't find another club. Being sacked at what was probably one of the lowest reps clubs I could choose is never good news. However, with the World Cup on, set my laptop on holiday mode whilst watching the football....

The 2014/2015 season provided me with zero interviews!! I expected to opportunities to be scarce but this was unbelievable!! But the wait was over. After sucking up in the first interview that came, on 27/05/2015 I became manager of Chilean First Division B side Club Deportivo San Marcos de Arica

View attachment 356488

Founded in 1978, El CDA, as it is affectionately known by fans, has won the First Division B twice; in 1981 and 2012 and the Third Divsion A once. So they have recently been relegated to the First Division B. So I had assumed my task was to bring them back up to the First Division, but no it was merely to finish mid-table!!

My budget was about the same as last time (I think)
Wage Budget 5k
Transfer budget 10k

Again they were struggling financially, and were in fact just in the red, which was worrying.

Before I start, I need to explain the rules of the Chilean First Division B.
There are 14 teams in this division, with the league split into opening stage and closing stage. Also, the teams are split into 2 groups of 7 geographically. So we call them N and S for North and South. in each stage, you play each team once, and additionally you play each team in your group once again. So in each stage you play 19 matches and 38 overall.

Ok now that's done, now to look at promotion and relegation!! Relegation is simple. Take the bottom team after 38 games, and they are relegated.

For promotion, things start to get tricky. 2 teams get promoted. The first is simple. Finish 1st after 38 games and you are promoted! Now, if you win either the opening or closing stage, you qualify for what is known as the "promotion playoff". Also, 2nd and 3rd after 38 games qualify for this. Also, if you overlap between the two, say you win the opening stage and finish 2nd overall, then 4th place overall qualifies for the promotion playoffs.

Ok, now we're done with all of these fiddly rules, let's move onto the team!! So, what happened in 2013/2014 and 2014/2015???

Well, in 2013/2014, El CDA managed something quite bewildering. They finished 13th in the opening stage and 2nd in the closing stage, so they were given a playoff spot!! Unfortunately, it was not meant to be and they remained in the First Division B the following season.

2014/2015 was a very unremarkable season, in the end finishing 13th overall, albeit 11 points ahead of 14th so not really in any danger of relegation.

Im guessing I was given the job and those expectations as their reputation was dwindling fast which works out for me as I'm back in employment!!

Starting from the beginning of the season really helped me ***** my players. Although I realised I forgot to arrange any friendlies, the Chile Cup group stages are held through July, whilst the league begins in August.

Rather depressingly, 6 players left on a free transfer, with me powerless in the situation as they were joining new clubs, so they were sent to the u20's. I then sent my single scout all over Chile in search of some talent, and on 29/06/2015 Fernando Espinoza, a 23 year old right and left midfielder joined on a free. I also promoted Juan Cordova from the u20's at the age of 16 to be a back up CB. With this, I was comfortable playing a 3-4-1-2 formation with the players at my disposal (and because Chile were playing 3 at the back)

So this was my squad (I've left out u20's and I may have left some fringe first team players) with the bold being my initial first team
GK: Cristian Torralbo 31 (was injured but is better)
GK: Cristobal Parra 17
CD: Jose Pedrozo 28
CD: Juan Cordova 16
CD: Edzon Riquelme 25
CD: Matias Blazquez
23
CD: Guillermo Riera 22
CM: Isias Basilliades 20
CM: Daniel Bricieno
28
LM: Christopher Singer 20
LM/RM: Fernando Espinoza 23
LM/RM/CAM: Diego Sepulveda 26
RM/ST: Nicolas Millan 23
CAM/ST: Juan Carlos Oviedo (Argentine) 18
CM/ST: Gonzalo Bravo
23
ST: Joel Estay
32

In my Chile Cup Group were Lota Schwager, Magallenes and Curicó Unido, all in D1B (First Division B) luckily. But I did not get off to a good start. Losing 2-1 to Lota Schwager, Drawing 1-1 to Magallenes and Losing 1-0 to Curicó Unido. However I was not to bothered because my team were still getting used to my tactics and also the board didnt care either. But this left me with hardly any chance of escaping the group.

My luck changed and I beat Magallenes 2-1 and Lota Schwager 1-0. Meanwhile, I looked to add to my tiny squad, and signed 16 year old CAM Richard Estay for 7k from a lower league side called Colchagua. His stats were impressive, in fact he was better than any CAM I had and this was backed up by my scouts giving a very good CA and 5* PA. He quickly took Oviedo's place.

Going into the last game I actually had a chance of qualifying to the 2nd round! However, I needed other results to go my way. We beat Curicó Unido 3-0 in what was a match in which my team felt like it had "clicked". And we were suddenly in the 2nd round of the Chile Cup (Round of 16)

I strengthened my attack by adding 16 year old Brazillian Savio, who was a free agent released from Brazillian Second Division Side America FC. He wasn't as good as Joel Estay or Gonazlo Bravo, but he wasn't too far off, and he had very good potential.

And so I was done with transfers, and I was poised to start the new season, with hopes of avoiding relegation, not setting the bar too high like last time.

So I found out that Cobreloa, a fellow D1B side were my opponents in the 2nd round of the Chile Cup and instantly fancied my chances to progress. But before that I had five league fixtures, with the fifth league fixture incidentally seeing us face Cobreloa. The way the fixtures work are that we play our 6 "North" fixtures first, and then play the 13 games against all of the teams.

So, we started brightly, winning by 1 goal margins, and after 4 games having 10 points. Now it was Cobreloa (league), which was a thrilling 3-3 draw, leaving it up to the first leg of the Chile Cup to decide a winner. Unfortunately we lost 3-1 and with that we were on the brink of knockout. The final "North" game was a 2-1 victory over Union San Felipe leaving us on 14 points out of a possible 18.

We were then put back down to size with two draws and a 5-2 defeat to Audax Italiano, leaving morale low heading into the 2nd leg against Cobreloa. A valiant performance was put in, but was not enough, as we lost 4-3 and were out of the cup, but we had exceeded expectations.

The next 7 games saw 2 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses including a humiliating 7-2 loss to San Luis. With 16 games played, we were on 23 points and slightly upper midtable. But all of the teams were close, except Audax Italiano who had all but won the opening stage. But even still, 3 decent games could see me go to 3rd/4th which was way higher than I ever expected. The last 3 games were all won and we ended up in 2nd with 32 points and Audax Italiano on 40 points in 1st.

I still dont understand the rules of promotion. Thoughts were entering my head. "Italiano are so far ahead, surely they will be overall Champions, in which case, does the playoff place for the opening stage winner go to me?" I wasn't sure but I sure hoped so.

In the mean time, the club was poor so I made O'Higgins, a First Division Side (D1) my parent club to get some extra income, with this we organised a friendly against them and somehow won 3-2!

December has passed and the January transfer window had opened. My team had changed slightly. Joel Estay and Oviedo were struggling for form whilst Savio was a goalscoring machine. Richard Estay was a revelation in the playmaker role and Bricieno was less than impressive in CM so I was playing Bravo in CM. I wanted to play Bravo up front, in his natural position so to alleviate the problem, I signed CM Brazillian Romario on a free. Matias Blazquez was proving to be inconsistant so in came 16 year old Cordova to take his place.

My opening two games of the Closed Stage were a 2-1 victory over Puerto Montt and a 2-0 loss to Audax Italiano. With Bravo unconvincing, and my scouts finding another Brazilian Striker who was, on paper better than my other strikers, 21 year old Valson was signed on a free after being a part of second division Brazilian side Parana. And that was all of the deals for the year:

View attachment 356482

13 games later, 4 wins, 3 draws and 6 losses later including a sweet revenge victory over San Luis of 5-2. We were on 18 points after 15 games, nowhere near as good as the opening stage. During this time there was also a takeover of the club by a local businessman. Bought for 250k, a 250k loan was given to the club, putting the club in the black.

However, looking at the overall table, we were 5th, only two spots away from a guaranteed playoff place. And with 3 wins out of 4, the pick of the games actually being the game we lost, a 5-3 loss to Puerto Montt we signed off the season in 3rd on the overall table, guaranteeing a playoff place. And as I predicted, Audax Italiano finished 11 points clear at the top. So maybe I had already qualified?

Now, in the semi final playoffs were Nublense, a team I had beat 3-2 at home and lost 2-1 away so I expected a thrilling yet close game. Yet at our home ground, the Carlos Dittborn Stadium, we were comfortable, winning 3-1. However, we were still wary of the away leg, which could prove our undoing, but again a comfortable 3-1 win put us through with a whopping 6-2 win on aggregate.

Now the final. I could hardly believe I had got this far. And in two games, we could be in D1!! However the opponents were Puerto Montt. Although we had beaten them 3 times in the league, the 5-3 loss was fresh in my head. But there was nothing to worry about. A 4-0 victory in the away leg all but guaranteed promotion, with a 1-0 victory in the home leg clinching promotion!!!!

I said I could hardly believe I reached the final, but getting promoted was some kind of dreamland for me!! But then it dawned on me... My squad barely made it through this season, and now I'm in D1... serious spending must be done!!

But before that, here's a brief review of my squad. Cristobal Parra played most of the season in goal... because he was good. Yes Torralbo was a lot better, but I couldn't just drop Parra. The defense remained the same as the midway point, and Romario proved to be a solid signing, however Valson managed just 1 goal in 19 games, while Savio proved to be clinical, ending on 27 goals in 40 games, 23 being in the league which saw him miss out on the golden boot by the virute that he played more games. However the stand out performer was Richard Estay with 12 goals and 14 assists who, not only got fans' player of the year, but D1B young player of the year and third for D1B player of the year. He was also the only CDA player in the D1B team of the year. With him already receiving the plaudits at the age of 17, I was wondering how long it would be before a bigger club wanted him

Any feedback? I've added a Brief Recap in the 1st post of what has happened until 2022. Shall I carry on with my full story untill 2022 or carry on from 2022?? Any feedback is appreciated

I appreciate journeyman manager stories. They are so few and far between. I love how insane the league structures and rules are in South America. Keep up the good work.

^ Thanks, Do you want to see the seasons up to 2022 or shall I carry on from where I am?

I really appreciate your story!! Are you a south-amrecian citizen?
I'm Brazilian and I love to do like this. I started with Treze (a small club from Brazil), an in now in 2018 I'm managed to get promoted to Serie A. But nou, seeing your story I wanted to do something similar..!!! nice work!!!

Haha thanks, no im english which made it harder for me.

ok, I'll do up to 2020 tommorow and up to my current situation the day after as a minimum

I knew I'd be in for a tough season so I signed 22 year old CB Felipe Millan for 30k from D1B side Naval and RM Marcos Soria on a free. I wasn't comfortable having Cordova as a starting CB and wanted to provide more competition in this department. Plus his stats were the best of any defender at this time. Soria was to be back up to my other wingers which meant I let Nicolas Millan leave on a free. Joel Estay had agreed to join Al-Rayyan at the end of his contract, which wasn't a big miss with Savio, Valson and Bravo above him in the pecking order.

But then European Clubs came in for Richard Estay. Measly offers in the hundreds of thousands came up, which for my club was a lot. Especially when you look back and that was close to our value. However, I then put up an asking price of 2.5 million in hopes that someone would take him.. and someone did!! But not long after that Lazio put in a 2.8 million bid so off he went to Lazio. But for some reason, the transfer would go through at the end of the season, and not only this but I had a loan back clause of a season, so he was here to stay for two seasons!!

With 2.8 million in the bag, I knew i could still not attract the sort of players I wanted so decided to invest this in youth and training facilites.

In the chile cup, i got the same group as the previous season and got through, to again face Cobreloa in the 2nd round. After losing 2-1 away, I won 2-1 at home which led to a penalty shootout which I lost.

In the league, my first win didn't come for 8 games, against Santiago Wanderers. I ended up only winning 3 games in the opening stage, but the last came on the penultimate day against bitter rivals Deportes Iquique with a 3-1 victory in front of a record crowd of 9,372. Up untill now I haven't talked about attendances because this was the first time we were close to packing out the Carlos Dittborn Stadium with a capacity of 9,746. We finished on 14 points in 16th place, just one place above the relegation zone.

During this time I started to look for regens from Africa, who seemed very willing to travel over to Chile, which led to an influx at our club of foreigners. After this I then realised a maximum of 7 foreigners were allowed in my squad with 5 allowed on the pitch at any one team, and I had signed at least 10......

In the end 18 year old CB Yala of Gabon (4.9k), 18 year CB Barusso of Ghana (11.25k) and 18 year CM Owona of Cameroon (free) joined the club. All 3 were slightly below the current level of my squad but had heaps of potential.

We fared slightly better in the closing stage, ending up on a total of 32 points in 34 games, 6 points clear of relegation.

However, Savio, who was top goalscorer in D1B struggled in D1 with Valson becoming the top striker and in the end claiming Fans' Player of the season. Although I felt the honour should have gone to Estay, although he did pick up the D1 young player of the year.

So time to push on from here!!

O man, your team not did well this last season. If I'm not making a misunderstanding here, last season you managed to take a place at Libertadores da América? Right?
Can you post a SS from your best player? It could help to see how good are players in this region.
BTW, did another tema contact you? Because you're doing a great job.

Yes, I got into libertadores. What is SS?? Since I'm English and I have the english leagues open, I've had job offers from english teams, but that is it.

International Management

In 2016, I applied for the Argentina U23 role, and became manager for a brief spell in Rio.

We won a warm up game against France 3-2 and breezed through the group against Spain, Australia and Ivory Coast and met France in the Quarter Final, where we lost 4-2.

Back to Club

Now, the 2017/2018 season begins and this time I had aims of a mid table finish. In came a few more African regens. Who were then sent out on loan since I had more the 7 foreigners, and promoted from the u20's was 17 year old striker Luis Paez. I could see Savio just wasn't good enough at this level and Bravo had signed a contract with another club so here was Paez's chance to shine.

We cruised through the Chile Cup group stages to face Cobresal in the 2nd round who we lost to 6-0 on aggregate. We didn't do too badly in the opening stage but same could be said of every other team, so we finish in 17th with 16 points.

Now, at the midway point, I could see Paez couldnt quite cut it just yet, so I managed to sign 22 year striker Luca Pontigo on a free from Colo Colo B.

He didn't get off to the greatest starts but he still gave us an extra option to put on the pitch, and we played a lot better in the closing stage, converting a lot of draws in the opening stage to wins in the closing stage and we managed to finish 5th which gave us a place in the play off (1st wins the title, 2nd-5th play in a play off.. to see who qualifies for Sudamericana I think)

In the semi final, I faced Universidad de Chile, a team I had not drawn with up to this point, let alone won against. After losing 2-1 at home I thought all had been lost but in the 2nd leg, my team pulled off a spectacular 5-2 victory to go through to the final.

But in the final lay Colo Colo, another team I had never picked up any points against. But that soon changed with a 1-1 draw at home. The away leg saw a 3-3 thriller but we lost out on penalties unfortunately.

So a much better season this time around, and at the end of this season we will be losing Richard Estay to Lazio, so there's a massive hole to fill there, and of course he was in contention for D1 young player of the year, but came 2nd this time.

However, fans' player of the year was CM Isias Basilliades.

Slow but steady progress being made... Next aim is to become a top half team!!!

The previous season saw CB and Captain Edzon Riquelme sidelined a lot and a contract was not offered so he retired, however by this time Cordova was ready, as were two African CB's Yala and Nana. In hopes to replace Estay, 15 year olds Mauricio Hidalgo of Melipilla (44k) and Sergio Cardenas of General Velasquez (free) were signed. They had unbelievable potential and were far better than my only other CAM Oviedo. A lot of players were released, most notably CM Romario. With Africans Owona and Outarra up and coming, he was surplus to requirements with such a high wage.

I also made two loan signings, Striker Benjamin Inostraza of Universdiad de Chile and CM Daniel Guzman of Colo Colo.

Again in the Chile Cup we strolled through the Group Stages, to face Cobreloa in the 2nd round. This time we won 5-1 on aggregate. In the Quarter Finals we had D1B side La Serena. After winning 1-0 away, I thought it was all but done. However we lost 3-2 so it went to penalties. This time we won on penalties and we had Universidad de Chile in the semi final. But this match happens at the start of the closing stage so we will deal with it then.

In the league we carried on our fine form and managed our highest points total in a stage, 28. However, the teams around us improved and we missed out on a play off spot by a point.

Next, 2019 and beyond!!

Seeing how well the opening stage went, I didn't see the need to invest further for my squad. Hidalgo proved a great replacement for Estay and Cardenas was a solid backup. Now, in the semi final I lost 4-1 to Universidad to all but end my glorious run before losing 2-1 in the return leg. But that was about all the bad luck we would have. We then played even better than in the opening stage with results like 2-0 against Colo Colo to end up on 33 points in 2nd place, 4 points behind Colo Colo.

So off we went into the playoffs, first smashing Cobresal 5-2 on aggregate, before beating Santiago Morning 4-2 and 3-2 to win the playoff and qualification into Sudamericana.

Hidalgo had lit up the league and won D1 young player of the year and fans' player of the year with team of the year being:
