The Southampton defender, Dan Seaborne, has been rushed to hospital in a potentially life-threatening condition. The 24 year-old was found lying outside one of the city's nightclubs with serious head injuries.
It is believed that Seaborne had been inside Junk, a London Road club, earlier in the evening, when an argument broke out. Police were called to the scene early in the morning as the row escalated.
Seaborne was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Southampton general hospital.
Two men, aged 35 and 29, have been arrested in connection with the incident. Hampshire police have also encouraged anyone who was in the nightclub on Thursday night, or anyone who was on London Road and witnessed what happened, to come forward.
The spokesman said: "Investigating officers are now trying to establish the circumstances that led to the man sustaining his injuries and although they have identified a number of witnesses, they are appealing for others to come forward."
Seaborne signed for Southampton from Exeter City in January 2010 for a fee of £250,000. He has since made 43 appearances for Saints, and was a pivotal figure in last season's promotion to the Championship.
