Sporting: It's in our blood

Deeply dispapointed to drop 4 points agasint weaker sides. We should be well out in front,
leading the chasing pack but these two draws have left us without a cushion to build on.

Still undefeated but dropping points. Not happy with the past month but hopefully we can start
make some distance between us and the rest of the league by December.

View attachment 349265

After our third draw in a row, I felt the need to call a team meeting.
We've now dropped 3 of or last 9 points on offer, this was a trend
I had to stop sooner rather than later. While I was not happy with
the squad, I felt I had on-the-pitch matters under control.

"We're not loosing games!"

It is worth remembering this and reminding the players what they
are capable of. The difference between 1 point and 3 points paper thin.

"Evening lads, I wanted to call you in to congratulate you"
I opened with.

There were a few confused looks throughout the dressing room.

"But, we're just after dropping points again boss?"

Patricio offered to the conversation.

"Really? I hadn't noticed. The table is what caught my eye."
I said looking him straight in the eye.

"Points are only as important as the numbers around us.
You say we've only gotten 3 points from our last 3 games,
but I look at this paper and see us sitting in second place!"

I raise my voice slightly to draw them in.

"1st Estoril; 15pts, 2nd Sporting Lisbon; 13pts, 3d Olhanense; 13pts,
4th F.C. Porto; 10pts
...
You put us this high in the table! I'll worry about
points, you look at the table and feel proud! Proud to be here as we show
Portugal that this is a club that won't roll over and die!"
I reminded them, as a
jabbed furiously at the league table printed in the local table.

"Undefeated, Spirited, Determined! These are the words I use to describe you all"

I could sense the mood lift in the dressing room

"Now get out there and give me the training session of your lives, it's getting
harder to pick a Starting XI given the performances you've shown me! Quality
is what I want and I can assure you, each and everyone of you has it!"

Everyone cheered and they ran out on the training pitch, a noticeable spring to
their steps. Exactly what I wanted to see.

I think this meeting has done it's job.

It took 8 league games to bring our first defeat. We're struggling to put away our chances
right now but I've a few ideas to shake up the team. Something will have to change and I think
my 3 ACMs might be causing some problems. I'm going to experiment with moving two men
wide and playing down the outside channels.

Huge win here boys. While it may only be the 3rd round, Braga are a decent
side and could have dumped us out on another day. We are targeting a trophy this
season so the Cup is definitely in my mind.

Very poor game and a terrible performance from my defense. 3 minutes in and in
truth, we were lucky only to give away the spot kick' I though we has getting a
straight red! It's time to shake things up and look at a new system.

View attachment 660266View attachment 349002
We've started to fall down the table while Estoril take a 2pt lead at the top of the table.
Though we are only 5pts from the top so it's early days yet but we need to stop falling
down the table or we could be in trouble soon.

We may have just caused the Braga manager to lose his job, but lets face
it, it's us or him and I'm not falling behind for anyone.

Let it slip at the death. Always disappointed to drop points but you can't fault the guys if
they're not loosing games. That's my philosophy.

Them: "Give us possession!"
Me: "Sure :P "

What good is possession when you're 4-0 down at full time.

Huge result. That's twice now I've beaten Braga and these wins
can only build confidence in the squad.

Poor form from Montero saw him being dropped as I decided to give on loan
Correa a creative role in the front line; which he executed perfectly.

View attachment 348937
Much better league form showed just how easily you can climb the table if you starting stringing wins
together. It gets harder from here on though as Porto and Benfica are unlikely to drop many points.

Dissent in the dressing room
View attachment 348522

After a woeful performance against S.L. Benfica, heads clashed in
the Sporting dressing room. I was not happy at all with his display and
let him know exactly how I felt.

View attachment 348504

Before deciding on any disciplinary action, I wanted to speak to the player
to see his side of the argument. If he accepts the blame for his poor showing, I'll
let him off with only a warning this time

View attachment 348500
Deeply disapointed. I sense a bit of an ego here so fined him 1 week wages

I will not put up with this sort of dissent! Straight on the Transfer List.

But just when I thought the matter was over, this happened.

a way to keep us on the back foot.

Out-skilled, Out-matched and Out-gunned.
An Oscar Cardozo hat-trick put us to the sword.

Youngster Bruno Wilson made his Sporting debut in this match and the 16 year old Defender
put in a great shift, finishing the match with a 7.10 rating. I had been closely following his
progress in training and felt he was ready to step up to the Senior team after impressing for
the U19s.

competing in the chasing packs.

View attachment 348357David Ngog

Profile

Despite only joining Swansea City in the sumer window, David has found himself surplus to requirement at
the Liberty Stadium. I was a big fan of him when he was a Liverpool. A quick, agile striker who showed moments of brilliance. I always felt he could excel in the right environment. He's been placed on the transfer List and we're currently negotiating a fee believed to be in the region of €150K

View attachment 348356Brian Hamalainen

Profile

The Danish Left Back who plays for Genk in Belgium has found himself on the fringe
of first team action this year, and with only 6 months left on his contract, I've
offered him a deal to come to Lisbon at the start of the 2014/15 season. This deal
is part of my long term vision for the club since our current starting right backs are only
contracted to the club through loan deal. I'll be retraining him to play RB

View attachment 348343Miguel Rosa

Profile

He may have grown up supporting Benfica but Rosa's footballing talent cannot
be denied. Having moved from Benfica to Belenenses during the Summer, a leg break
has put his long term future in jeopardy. I've a €300K tabled and at only 24 years of age,
he should still have a fine future ahead of him after some work with our physios.

January Transfers

IN

David Ngog: A €130K bid was accepted but the deal fell through after I refused to
meet the players wages demands. He wanted 50Kp/w and I was not willing to even
tough that figure.

Miguel Rosa: The club accepted a €375K offer for the 25 year old Portuguese midfielder.
I've arranged the deal to go through int eh summer window since he's injured and stands
a better chance at getting 1st team football at his current club after he recovers from his
injury.

Brian Hamalainen: We've agreed a pre-contract that will come into effect on July 1st, 2014.
A strong solid Left back who can also play further up the wing an an attacking role. At only 24, he
has a big future ahead of him.

Bosco: This 19 year old Brazilian striker came to my attention when a scout rang the office with
clear excitement in his voice. I sent the scouting team to South America to find a young striker who had all the qualities I like in a player: pace, balance, strength, flair, workrate, technique, passing, finishing; a Complete Forward who can play in any role up front basically. He cost me €1.2M and I allowed him to go back on loan to the club for the rest of the seasons but we may have a very good player for season to come.

Attributes

Out

Fredy Montero: I didn't really want to see this guy go but his form had dropped significantly and
he was startign to cause moral drops int he dressing room. He seriously under proformed during most of the season and I was glad to get €1.9M for him so the club broke even on the player.

Quite a disapointing monht. One exhillerating game but the lack of depth in the squad
is startling to show how far behind the other big two we really are.

Injury to hero goalkeeper Patricio was a scary moment. Wasn't sure how long he'd be out for but thanks fully it was 2-3 weeks.

My back up Goalkeeper, Marcelo Boeck, came in for 4 games and did well, even if he did concede 11 goals.

I genuinly didn't know weather to laugh or cry. This was an absolute epic of
a game but I never like to concede as many goals as that so it's bitter-sweet.
