Does competition for places have an effect on a player's attitude in Football Manager?

In the real world, it is a good idea to have good squad depth not only to cover for injuries but also to keep players in your starting XI (if you have one) 'on their toes'. A good example of this is the recent arrival of Diego Lopez at Real Madrid; Casillas's performances were deemed to have slipped (by his standards), potentially on account of having virtually no one challenging him for the number one spot. The idea is that Diego Lopez's subsequent replacement of him in league matches and just his general presence in the squad will encourage Casillas to up his game - and, judging by his performances in the CL and Copa del Rey, many people feel this has worked.

I have never been able to suss if having competition for places can have a similar effect on players' mentality in FM, does anyone know the answer to this? Particularly with the goalkeeper position, is it worth having a high quality back up, or do the players' "brains" not work in that way? Thanks.
