I'm thinking of using a 4-1-2-1-2 formation.

I have the number of Goalkeepers, Defenders and Forwards figured out (2, 8 & 4)

How many Midfielders would I need to make this work, I was thinking 7/8 with 2 of them being a LW & RW.

I'd say around 9/10 with a couple of promising youngsters that will eventually become your number 1 choice.

IMO you should have:

3 GK (1 young)
10 defenders (2 for each position plus 2 young)
5 strikers (2 for each position, plus 1 young)
Now, the mids:

2 for each position, which makes 8, plus 2 or 3 youngs.

FM13 as a lot of injuries and this 5 players will make at least 10 games. You can have them in the reserve squad, ofc.
