Has anyone made a tactic with stand off instruction? I'm trying to develop a counter-attacking tactic, but just cant get it to work with stand off. The closest to geting a ''solid'' defence is to drop deep and hassle the opponents. If standing off, you just get demolished and concede soner or later. Am I wrong in the assumption that this instruction is only for a shut up shop style in the last minutes of a match?

Really interested if someone managed to create a working tactic with less closing down :)

For me, stand off is good against opponents who are trying to play direct football. It allows your players to focus on holding their shape & positions to intercept passes rather then actively trying to win the ball & leaving space for the opposition to pass into.

People tend to associate it with a "defensive" style of play but that is not necessarily the case & it can actually be counter productive against a team that is willing to "work the ball into the box"

As with any ti there is a time & place for it.
