Stanway Rovers - A Huge Challenge

OK, using the Data Editor I have placed Stanway Rovers into the Blue Square South. (I will post screenshots to ensure that no other editing went on.)

They are a side with a reputation of 150 although I assume that will increase to their entry into the Blue Square South.

Despite loading all players from England, I am greeted by a side with all regens all 15 & 16 years old.

Also, for some odd reason, we do not have a stadium.

My challenge:

First seasons expectations are to fight bravely against relegation this season and I think that that is exactly what we will be doing. I'm not very optimistic to be totally honest.

I will need to buy an entire team, the side is full of regens none of which are over 16. With a transfer budget of £0 and a wage budget of £2.6k, this won't be easy.

Wow, a fairly bleak pre-season. Things started fairly well seeing as we only lost 2-0 to Macclesfield and I was positive. Then we went on to beat Hungerford. From then on it was pretty poor. Losing three consecutive games to lower league opposition. Then came some light at the end of the tunnel, had my side finally found their scoring boots? Beat Northwood 5-0 and I decided to arrange a friendly against the nearby, Colcheser United.

Stanway Rovers 0 - 9 Colchester United

I wasn't expecting to win but I certainly was not expecting to get slaughtered out there, this will be a game that the fans will want to forget. Outplayed completely and one man destroyed us. Dele Adebola hit 7 and well, I was speechless. The game before the start of the season and this will have knocked us for six.

Start of the Season:

By this stage, I had strengthened the team somewhat. (Screenshots will be included once I've finished signing players.) I tried to get many but some decided to go elsewhere. (Can't say I blame them.)
I wasn't feeling to confident for my first game against Hampton & Richmond.

Been having difficulty getting on to the site but I've got an update for you.

Transfers: See attachment.

Tried to get a few of the bigger names amongst Lower League Management but failed. My first attempt was former Portsmouth midfielder Carl Pettefer, when I saw he would be interested I was delighted but he decided on a move to Macclesfield instead. Also went for Ian Snodin but the same story applies there.

Went with the LLM favourite of Zlatko Yankov. I'm usually against signing him because he tires and declines so much mid season but I'm going to need all the help and experience I can get. The fans loved me signing him but they loved all my signings. XD

My signings are a mix of young and old. Yankov and my captain, 35yr old Hanmer are the more experienced signings. Whereas Kurrant and Pratt are both under 22 and should be in the squad for a year or two hopefully.

Poor facilities. Unknown stadium which when mentioned, is referred to as <stadium#1->. Lack of a youth setup. Things are poor but hopefully will improve as the seasons go on. I'm in this for the long run.

Had I written this when I intended on doing so, the board would still be under it's old ownership. The old owner was looking to sell and that's exactly what he did. Nothing changed though.

Stanway Rovers 1 – 2 Hampton & Richmond (Potter) – The odds were heavily stacked against us. (50-1) So with this result, I’m not that bothered. We scored a goal in the first minute and I was optimistic but the result is acceptable and the board or the fans aren’t too fussed. Two terrible mistakes from the keeper lead to the goals though so that may be an area I need to address.

Basingstoke 0 – 1 Stanway Rovers (Banton) – This is the kind of result I like to see and I think these are the kinds of wins we can look forward to all season. We had plenty of chances but it all came down to a 88<sup>th</sup> minute penalty which was put away but 16 year old, Banton.

Stanway Rovers 3 – 0 Newport County (Potter (2), Kurrant) – Like all of our games will be this season, odds stacked against us yet we put in a stunning performance and got a great result. Pleased with the signing of Potter so far, may have found myself a real gem.

Bath 3 – 0 Stanway Rovers – We follow up on a 3-0 win by facing a 3-0 defeat. The beauty is that the board or fans are still pleased even if we lose, although I’m not. We were outplayed and had very few chances.

Stanway Rovers 0 – 1 Maidenhead – We were really unlucky with this game. We had so many chances and we failed to convert them. Potter may be my leading scorer but he misses a few too many opportunities for my liking.

Monthly Review: An erratic start to the season, 2 wins and 3 defeats leave us sitting 14<sup>th</sup> in the league. However I can draw more positives than negatives. I’m fairly pleased with the squad and I may bring in one or two more players but I feel happy with the side I’ve assembled. Also, the board is in the process of a board takeover. I’m not expecting a Roman Abramovich and it’s more than likely to be a promotion from within.

There is more but I don't want to lump it all into one post.

i did this with ton angels and i won the league, but then went up and got whipped 5-0 every game, thing is, is i was 10th till the 20th game so just stick at it mate

Had all this written up in MS Word so I thought I might as well get you all up to date with everything.

September: <o></o>
St. Albans 0 – 3 Stanway Rovers (Pratt, Spearitt, Potter) – Maybe that 3 – 0 wasn’t a fluke. Away to St. Albans in the Conference League Cup and we pull out this victory. We dominated the game and I’m delighted with the result. The board only expected me to get to the first round and I stroll on into the second.<o></o>

Stanway Rovers 2 – 2 Havant & Waterlooville – (Potter(2)) – We went in at half time 2-0 down and my team talk apparently worked. Potter nets twice and we manage to get something out of the game. Ross Lloyd gets sent off in the 88<sup>th</sup> minute which I’m not best pleased about but I’m happy to get a point here.<o></o>

Just signed the final piece for my starting line up. Will Atkinson on loan from Hull. Problem is that I’ve already got 2 long term loan signings, he’s only on a 3 month contract so chances are, I’ll be renewing that all season. (Hopefully.) He can play both wings so he’s quite versatile which is a huge bonus in this side.<o></o>

Fisher Athletic 0 – 3 Stanway Rovers (Atkinson(2), Heslop) – Another fantastic result and I’m starting to feel really confident about this season. Atkinson has a fantastic debut and I feel this may be my finest signing yet. Out on the right wing on loan from Hull he does a fantastic job. Unfortunately Gareth Hanmer, my captain picks up an injury that will rule him out for 3 months.<o></o>

Weston-super-Mare 0 -2 Stanway Rovers (Fairhurst, Potter) – The players are probably starting to forget what our non-existent home ground looks like as this is our fourth away game in a row. It doesn’t affect the lads though and we give another great performance. Potter scores another and Fairhurst gets his first for the club.<o></o>

Wealdstone 0 – 2 Stanway Rovers (Pratt, Hare) – A fine result in the cup. We were up against non league opposition, yet we were still expected to lose heavily. I’m wondering when the bookies will catch on to our form. Another win here and we progress in the FA Cup, which my expectation in is to enjoying competing.<o></o>

Stanway Rovers 4 – 4 Eastleigh (Pratt (4)) – Back home finally and on the surface, this will look like a result I’m pleased with, but I’m not. We were 3-0 up at half time and we through the game away. Pratt scores 4 which is nice. <o></o>

Monthly Review: A good month, we were unbeaten and sit pretty at 7<sup>th</sup> in the league. I’m confident that we can maybe push for the playoffs this season. But I want to take things one month at a time. My squad is pretty bare and we would struggle with even the smallest of injury crisis’s. The board takeover is still ongoing.<o></o>

October:<o></o>
Stanway Rovers 2 – 2 Chelmsford City (Potter, Atkinson) – A result that I am quite pleased with. I thought the worst when we went 2-0 down and I feared that my unbeaten streak was coming to an end but my half time team talk must’ve worked because we pulled two back. Atkinson got the winner in the last minute of injury time.<o></o>

7<sup>th</sup> October – Andrew Hollands completed his takeover of the club, it was only a promotion from within. He was the former director so I don’t expect any changes. Quite disappointed, would’ve loved an oil tycoon. <o></o>

Eastleigh 1 – 2 Stanway Rovers (Pratt, Fairhurst) – Once again, we go in behind at half time and pull out the win. Both goals in the last 20 minutes. Soon our luck will run out and the heavy fixture load is taking its toll. Fitness is low and I’m left with a large amount of 16 year olds.<o></o>

Weston-super-Mare 1 – 2 Stanway Rovers (Pratt, Hackney) – We march on in the FA Cup but it was a tough game. 9 yellow cards in total and we made it through thanks to a 94<sup>th</sup> minute goal from 16 year old Max Hackney. Another close game, but a result I’m pleased with.<o></o>

Dorchester 2 – 1 Stanway Rovers – After a long time coming, our undefeated streak has come to an end. Nine games without losing however is something to be proud of. This young side have done really well and the team is gelling superbly. I am concerned that some of our younger players are struggling.<o></o>

Stanway Rovers 0 – 2 AFC Wimbledon - A poor performance. Created very few chances and we were outplayed. After the match, their manager told the press that we’d have no problems avoiding relegation. I’m confident that we will but not if we play the way we did today.<o></o>

Stanway Rovers 2 – 1 Blyth Spartans (Pratt(2)) – Back to winning ways and we had to grind it out. Perhaps we could’ve had more seeing as Heslop missed a penalty but this win sees us into the first round of the FA Cup where Wycombe awaits...<o></o>

Bromley 2 – 4 Stanway Rovers (Potter, Atkinson, Lloyd(2)) – Both their goals were own goals which is slightly annoying and it shows just how error prone this side is but it is a great result and the media have fallen for my defender Ross Lloyd with headlines of “Legendary Lloyd!” greeting the papers the following day.<o></o>

Monthly Review: Not a bad month, two defeats in the league which had its consequences as we slide back down to our familiar position in mid table. Two wins to see out the month leads to me being optimistic for November.<o></o>

Stanway Rovers 0 -0 Welling – Fairly poor game of football here. First goalless draw of the season and well, nothing really to comment on here. Three games unbeaten is a positive to draw and I can’t knock getting a clean sheet because it’s my first in a long time.

Basingstoke 1 – 0 Stanway Rovers – I’m worried about my team now. I’m not overreacting at this result but the heavy fixture load is catching up with my side. I brought in 15 players and that’s plenty but once a few of them get injured, then I’m left with a lot of youngsters. Their fitness isn’t great and now, before half time comes around a few of my players condition is nearing 50%.

Stanway Rovers 2 – 4 Wycombe Wanderers (Lloyd, Banton) – Our cup run has come to an end but we did well to get to the first round and we were unlucky being drawn against Wycombe. We went 2-0 down very early on but we pulled back two only to concede a third from a penalty. They added the fourth late on to dump us out. What’s even more annoying is that I played this game once before and won 3 – 2 but then my laptop switched itself off.

Stanway Rovers 2 – 2 Team Bath – For the first time in quite a while, we get a week’s rest which I hope will do wonders for this tired team. We go 2-0 like in the last game, pull it back to 2-2 but this time, we hold onto a point. We haven’t won in a while but after two defeats, I’m glad to get a point.

Stanway Rovers 2 – 3 Weston-super-Mare (Potter, Yankov) – Went in 3-0 down at half time, got excited when we pulled two back but we failed to get the equaliser. Haven’t had a win in five now and this knocks us out of another competition. This time, the FA Trophy.

Braintree 2 – 1 Stanway Rovers (Potter) – We’re on a slide and it’s going to be hard to get out of. We are now closer to the relegation zone than the playoff places. I’m reluctant to change the formation or make too many changes to the lineup. I feel that I am going to have to sign a few more players. We seem to concede too many goals in the first half.

Stanway Rovers 0 – 0 Hayes & Yeading – A clean sheet and a point, not a bad result but this side is only one place above us in the league and these are the kinds of games we need to win. However, taking our recent form and fitness into account, a draw is a good result. Lost my vice-captain, Jonathan Kurrant to strained knee ligaments, he’ll be out for 2 to 3 months. I need more players ASAP.

Monthly Review: No doubt, the worst month since I got the job. We didn’t win a single game, our players are getting extremely tired and injuries are starting to occur. I need to bring in a lot of players to get me through the season. I’ll try and bring in another big loan signing to add some flair and talent to a side which is definitely lacking. Morale is sinking. Strikers aren’t scoring. Things need to change.
