steam needs to be online to update but was set to offline mode

Hi after many crashes on my pc I finally persuaded my mum to let me use her mac for fm lol. Just went to install steam as that is where I downloaded fm from and when I clicked on the steam icon to load it up I got this error message.

I've heard it's common on macs so does anyone know of a fix?
