The FA: Hodgson Resigns!

View attachment 307214

English manager Roy Hodgson has today announced his resignation from his job as the England national team manager. The 65-year-old manager - formerly of Inter Milan, Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion - announced his decision following a health scare. Hodgson had reportedly spent the last week in a hospital somewhere in London and has now released a statement to the press which reads that himself and David Bernstein, head of The FA, have come to a mutual decision which will allow Hodgson to leave his role.

The much-travelled manager took charge of the senior England national team in May of last year - following Italian manager Fabio Capello's decision to leave in February. He spent last Summer with the team at the European Championships which were held in Poland and Ukraine; with his side reaching the Quarter-Finals before being knocked out by eventual Runners-Up, Italy, on penalties after holding the Southern European side to a 0-0 result after 120 minutes.

Despite Hodgson's health scare, his family moved to dismiss rumours of any serious medical condition and said the English manager would like some time to recover in peace. It is reported that his condition has dramatically improved and will soon be fit and healthy again - although he decided it was time for a rest from the footballing world. Hodgson leaves the team in 2nd place of the World Cup 2014 Qualifiers Group 8 - five points behind leaders Montenegro having played just four games. The Three Lions face the group leaders next - before travelling to Ukraine and Poland with a home game against San Marino splitting the two fixtures.

It is reported that England Under-21 Manager Stuart Pearce is already in advanced talks with The FA with a view to taking over the senior team in the near future. It is expected that the 50-year-old should replace Hodgson as he is the natural successor following his time as the U-21 Manager.

The FA: Stuart Pearce appointed!

View attachment 307224

Former Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce has been appointed as Manager of the senior England national team. The 50-year-old manager joins just days after Roy Hodgson announced his resignation from the role. Since his spell at Manchester City, the English manager has spent time as the Great Britain Head Coach at the 2012 Olympics as well as leading the England U-21 side.

Pearce takes over with England 2nd in Group 8 for the World Cup 2014 Qualification with six games left. The team won three of their first four games of the campaign - although stumbled to an embarrassing away defeat at Moldova. Pearce's first game in charge will be against group leaders Montenegro and will allow England to move just two points behind their leaders. However, the game promises to be a tough game for England as they face talent such as striker Stevan Jovetic.

After being appointed, Stuart Pearce announced his intentions to use a mix of youth and experience in his future teams:

"I understand the public outcry to include more youth in the England squad due to the age of many senior players and whilst I plan to include younger players in my squad - experienced players like Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard will not be ruled out of contention."

When asked about the possible return of defenders Rio Ferdinand and John Terry, Pearce responded:

"Neither player will make a single appearance while I'm manager. Not only do I feel as though these players are losing their footballing ability - but I also believe that neither would bring presence to the dressing room which isn't already there with players like Gerrard and Lampard available."

Pearce's first 23-man squad:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, Fraser Forster, John Ruddy

Defenders: Leighton Baines, Ashley Cole, Gary Cahill, Ryan Shawcross, Chris Smalling, Micah Richards, Glen Johnson, Kyle Walker.

Midfielders: Adam Johnson, Ashley Young, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Tom Huddlestone, Jake Livermore, Jack Rodwell.

Strikers: Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck.

Just a Quick Q,
Phil Jones Injured? Michael Carrick for Jake Livermore, and No Frank Lampard as well?

Phil Jones and Frank Lampard were both injured - and I'd rather play Livermore than Carrick as I feel I already have enough experience in midfield

Stuart Pearce's first game in charge ended with his team picking up an important three points due to a dominant performance. The 50-year-old manager took a gamble by naming an inexperienced midfield while important player Steven Gerrard failed to make the bench due to an injury suffered just hours before kick-off.

England started well as Baines broke down the left side straight from kick-off and an impressive cross was cleared to Glen Johnson who struck the ball first time and gave his team a 1-0 lead. As the first-half was coming to an end, the Three Lions doubled their lead. Ashley Young floated a free-kick towards the near post and lone striker Wayne Rooney flicked the ball on and into the net.

At half time, winger Theo Walcott replaced Arsenal team-mate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as no other changes were made to either side.

As the second half kicked off, England attacked. Theo Walcott had an impressive run down the right wing before crossing towards the back post - leaving Wayne Rooney with an easy finished as he nodded the ball back across goal. Midway through the second half, striker Wayne Rooney laid the ball to defender Leighton Baines who's trickery in the box took him past three players before slotting across goal to make it 4-0 to England. As the game was drawing to a close, winger Theo Walcott ran from within his half - past six defenders - and tapped past the Montenegro goalkeeper. In a late consolation goal, dangerous Montenegro striker Stevan Jovetic ran between England's two centre-half's and slotted through Joe Hart's legs.

Stuart Pearce's England once again impressed as they played out an interesting fixture against a strong Ukraine side. Experienced midfielder Steven Gerrard returned to the side - as did Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere after the pair had missed the game against Montenegro through injury. Striker Wayne Rooney dropped to the bench in the only other change as Daniel Sturridge started in the lone-striker role.

With less than a minute on the clock, midfielder Jack Wilshere gave England the lead. A strong challenge from the Arsenal man in his own half led to the midfielder scoring a stunning solo goal as he sailed past 4 players before slotting under the Ukraine goalkeeper. Wilshere then doubled the England lead as winger Oxlade-Chamberlain crossed for the Arsenal midfielder to knock home. In the 40th minute, Ukraine halved England's lead. A quick build-up led to striker Seleznyov beating England keeper Joe Hart at his near post. Just three minutes later, however, England's two goal lead was restored. Ashley Young beat 5 Ukraine players before sliding a through ball for Jack Wilshere to complete his hat-trick.

Defender Glen Johnson and striker Daniel Sturridge were both taken off at half-time due to minor injuries which saw Kyle Walker and Danny Welbeck enter the fray for the second half.

Just minutes into the second half, striker Danny Welbeck made it 4-1 to England. A free-kick from Ashley Young was poorly cleared and the Manchester United striker reacted quickest to give England a three goal lead. In the 54th minute, a defensive mistake by Chris Smalling allowed Ukraine to score another. Andriy Yarmolenko benefited from the mistake as he slotted across Joe Hart and into the back of the net. Just four minutes later, Ukraine once again halved England's lead. Some great wing play from Konoplyanka saw him beat 3 England defenders before crossing for Yarmolenko to grab his second as he nodded home.

England's first non-competitive match under Stuart Pearce proved to be a successful outing as they hosted South American side Paraguay. Nine changes were made to the England side following their recent 4-3 win away at Ukraine. An attendance of 74,000 looked on as England played out a comfortable game against the South Americans.

England took the lead midway through the first half when Leighton Baines played a long ball forward to striker Wayne Rooney. The Manchester United man took on three players before laying Theo Walcott off who curled the ball around two defenders and the Paraguay goalkeeper to score a stunning goal.

At half time, Stuart Pearce made five substitutions as Ashley Cole, Daniel Sturridge, Ashley Young, Chris Smalling and Jack Rodwell came on for Micah Richards, Leighton Baines, Aaron Lennon, Tom Huddlestone and Jack Wilshere.

Wayne Rooney doubled England's lead in the 70th minute. An Ashley Young corner was headed home by the Manchester United striker and just ten minutes later, another set piece including the same two players gave England a 3-0 lead. Ashley Young's deflected free-kick allowed Wayne Rooney to nip in ahead of the Paraguay goalkeeper and nod home.

A bit of side info; I won't be including the 25 man squads for friendlies - although I'll post them for competitive games. Hope that's okay for everyone! Any advice from anyone would be helpful?
