English manager Roy Hodgson has today announced his resignation from his job as the England national team manager. The 65-year-old manager - formerly of Inter Milan, Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion - announced his decision following a health scare. Hodgson had reportedly spent the last week in a hospital somewhere in London and has now released a statement to the press which reads that himself and David Bernstein, head of The FA, have come to a mutual decision which will allow Hodgson to leave his role.
The much-travelled manager took charge of the senior England national team in May of last year - following Italian manager Fabio Capello's decision to leave in February. He spent last Summer with the team at the European Championships which were held in Poland and Ukraine; with his side reaching the Quarter-Finals before being knocked out by eventual Runners-Up, Italy, on penalties after holding the Southern European side to a 0-0 result after 120 minutes.
Despite Hodgson's health scare, his family moved to dismiss rumours of any serious medical condition and said the English manager would like some time to recover in peace. It is reported that his condition has dramatically improved and will soon be fit and healthy again - although he decided it was time for a rest from the footballing world. Hodgson leaves the team in 2nd place of the World Cup 2014 Qualifiers Group 8 - five points behind leaders Montenegro having played just four games. The Three Lions face the group leaders next - before travelling to Ukraine and Poland with a home game against San Marino splitting the two fixtures.
It is reported that England Under-21 Manager Stuart Pearce is already in advanced talks with The FA with a view to taking over the senior team in the near future. It is expected that the 50-year-old should replace Hodgson as he is the natural successor following his time as the U-21 Manager.
