Team News
Arsenal will again be without defender Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles) and midfielder Abou Diaby (ankle).
Tomas Rosicky and Kieran Gibbs could be involved having sat out the midweek 6-0 Champions League victory over Braga.

Sunderland will be without captain Lee Cattermole following his second red card of the season at Wigan last week.
Defender John Mensah, who has been struggling with a hamstring injury, is a doubt, but Ahmed Elmohamady will be available after a minor knock.

Sunderland
Suspended: Cattermole (two matches)
Doubtful: Mensah (hamstring), Reid (Achilles)
Injured: Campbell & Meyler (both knee), Gordon (arm), Turner (ankle)

Arsenal
Injured: Bendtner (groin), Diaby, van Persie & Walcott (all ankle), Frimpong (knee), Ramsey (broken leg), Vermaelen (Achilles)

Bruce's Thoughts
We know Arsenal are an excellent side but I'm focused on what we do rather than the opposition. When the crowd get going the noise is phenomenal and we need them there in numbers replicating that again this weekend

Wenger's Thoughts
Sunderland are a good team and we know that it will be a very important game for us," admitted Wenger. "We know that the transition between Europe and the Premier League will be very important in our season too.
Ideally you would want a team like Sunderland at home now but we can't choose that. We just have to show we have the strength and ability to focus on the Premier League straight away.

Sunderland 1-3 Arsenal (Gyan, Cham, Arshavin, Fab)

its a game that Arsenal tend to drop points in recent years so if they win this then i will firmly believe that they have a better chance of winning the league this season. But i think Sunderland will win this 2-1.

hopefully Almunia will keep up his good form of late :)

3-0 Arsenal. Sunderland have looked decent, a win vs Man City means they are no slouches, but after Arsenal's midweek mauling, they will be on a high.

Got 80 quid on Bent to score first and Sunderland to win 1-0 at 38-1

80 quid haha that's a lot of money for a very unlikely bet man...

Pfft. Andy's family burn that money on a daily basis just because they can.

Narrow win for Arsenal methinks, but as some people have said, Sunderland aren't usually an easy opponent for us. 2-1.

Sunderland 0-2 Arsenal with chamakh and walcott scoring

Sunderland 0-2 Arsenal with chamakh and walcott scoring

walcotts injured :'(

So on to the betting. As ever, picking the first goalscorer from this Arsenal side is tricky but going on the presumption that is going to be a tighter game, once again Marouane Chamakh stands out to use his physical presence and heading ability to get on the score-sheet. He’s nicely priced at 9/2 to score first and 5/4 to do it anytime.
Arshavin has been a constant threat all season and he’s 6/1 to score first and 9/5 to score in 90 minutes. After his brace against Braga, Fabregas is showing, as he did last season, that he has most certainly added goals to his game. The captain is 13/2 for first goalscorer and 2/1 anytime. For the second game in a row Carlos Vela came on to score the last goal and he’s 13/2 to make it three in a row.

A goal to be scored after the 81st minute is 13/8, something which has happened in four of Arsenal’s five games this season. A big score is always possible with this Gunners side but being pragmatic, Arsenal to win 2-0 at 13/2, 2-1 at 13/2 and 3-1 at 11-1 look the more likely score-lines in what is sure to be a tough battle in the Stadium of Light.
