Following Swansea City's impressive first season in the Premier League, Brendan Rodgers left his post to take up the managerial role at Liverpool. With the very popular Northern Irishman moving to Merseyside the Swansea board yet again had the task of appointing a new manager. Names such as Ian Holloway and Michael Laudrup were mentioned as possible replacements. However Huw Jenkins took a risk of handing the job to 41 year old Matthew Thomas into the hot seat for Swansea's second Premier League season.

July & August - Big Name Arrivals

With new investors Swansea finally had a bit of money to spend in the summer transfer window and they took full advantage that sent shockwaves through world football. Highly rated South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-Yeung joined from Scottish side Celtic for £5.5million. After declining a new contract at Valencia Spanish winger Pablo Hernandez joined on a four year deal. La Liga ace Miguel Michu joined for £2.2million from Rayo Vallecano. Following his release by Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard returned to the club that he had scored his first ever goal for on a free transfer.

Then the big money started to flow as Lampard's Chelsea teammate Fernando Torres finally ended his horror spell at Stamford Bridge and moved to South Wales in a £20million move. Lille wonderkid Eden Hazard also made a shock move to the Swans in a £35million switch to the Premier League.
On 15th July the most shocking football transfer of all time occured when Barcelona world superstar Lionel Messi decided to end his Nou Camp career and join the Swans on a three year contract.

Andrea Orlandi ended his Swansea career with a £3million move to Championship outfit Brighton and Hove Albion. Leroy Lita also moved on to join Birmingham and goalkeeper Jose Moreira moved to Derby. Joe Allen, a reported target for Liverpool, eventually joined newly promoted Blackpool. The biggest wrench for Swansea fans was the departure of Ferrie Bodde. The Dutchman's Swansea career was blighted by injuries and he moved to Malaga for £8million.

Pre-Season
Swansea City 5-1 Barnsley
Lionel Messi, Eden Hazard and Pablo Hernandez made their first starts in Swansea shirts with the four time Ballon D'or winner opening the scoring with a typically composed finish. After a Barnsley own goal Rory Donnelly made it three-nil seven minutes into the second half with a low drive. Ki Sung-Yeung and Michu came on for their debuts as the manager swapped almost the entire team on the hour mark. A foul in the box by Steven Caulker gave Barnsley a penalty that nathan Doyle converted. Danny Graham opened his pre-season account after chipping in a Swansea fourth. And with two minutes left Angel Rangel broke forward and finished expertly to make it five.

Southampton 1-3 Swansea City
Fernando Torres made his Swansea bow at Saint Mary's while Frank Lampard made his second Swansea debut in another comfortable victory for Matthew Thomas' side. It took them until the fifty-sixth minute to go in front as Wayne Routledge converted after good interplay between Lampard and Gower. Captain Garry Monk headed in Gower's corner before the Saints pulled one back through Ricky Lambert. Danny Graham secured the win with a thuderous 25 yard strike.

Port Talbot Town 0-10 Swansea City
Danny Graham bagged four goals and Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick as Swansea overcame their Welsh Premier League opponents at The GenQuip Stadium. Frank Lamapard also scored for his first strike back as a Swansea player. There was also a debut goal for Pablo Hernandez.

Bala Town 0-12 Swansea City
Danny Graham continued his goal scoring form by scoring six while Eden Hazard scored his first for the club. Hernandez and Routledge were again on the scoresheet with Williams, Dobbie and Britton completing the rout.

Peterborough 0-5 Swansea City
Routledge, Torres, Lampard and Graham all got on the scoresheet and there was a debut goal for 15 year old French centre-back Tommy Schmitt.

Basel 0-5 Swansea City
The Swans began their two game tour of Switzerland with a comfortable win over Basel. Rory Donnelly bagged a brace while Lampard and Torres rounded off the scoring.

Grasshoppers 0-6 Swansea City
Donnelly again scored twice and Hernandez, Dobbie and Schmitt scored while Ki Sung-Yeung opened his account for the Swans.

How much did you pay for messi? And how did you persuade him and Torres to play for you're club?

Curtain Opening

Barclays Premier League
18 Aug: Liverpool (A)

The Swans began their campaign with a visit to their former manager's Liverpool side. Swans fans never believed they would be facing Brendan Rodgers so soon and what a start for the South Wales team.
Lampard, Hazard and Hernandez were all including in the starting XI while Messi, Torres and Michu took their places on the bench.
It started badly for the Swans as Steven Gerrard picked out new signing Niko Krancjar to put the hosts in front aft 18 minutes. The lead lasted another 18 minutes as Hernandez's cross was headed past Pepe Reina by an onrushing Danny Graham and the teams went in to half-time tied at 1-1.
Liverpool were quickest out of the blocks and nearly retook the lead as Andy Carroll saw his point-blank header somehow kept out by Michel Vorm.
This woke the Swans up and on 67 minutes they were in front as Stephen Dobbie played a lovely through ball to Danny Graham who cooly slotted home.
Again Liverpool looked threatening and Luis Suarez came close to an equaliser when his free-kick was tipped over by Vorm.
Thomas threw on Torres and Michu on for Graham and Dobbie and the latter netted in injury time after a mistake by Daniel Agger.

25 Aug: Tottenham Hotspur (H)
Harry Redkanpp brought his Spurs side to the Liberty after an opening day victory against Norwich. Lionel Messi made his Swansea debut as the only change to the starting line-up. To the frustration of the Swans supporters the team looked to sit back and then hit on the counter and could have been behind as early as the third minute when Jermaine Defoe dragged wide when one on one with Vorm.
With 20 minutes on the clock the home side found themselves in front as Lampard robbed Scott Parker and his lofted through ball dropped for Graham to hit first time that flew past Brad Friedel. It remained 1-0 up to half-time.
Seconds after the restart Lionel Messi showed his class as he picked up the ball and ran past Parker, Huddlestone and Dawson before squaring it to Graham who could not miss from six yards out 2-0.
Tottenham tried to respond and new signing Walter Montillo had a 25 yard screamer bounce back off the crossbar.
Despite constant pressure Swansea kept Spurs at bay to secure back to back wins.

2 Sep: Manchester City (A)
The Swans came back down to earth with a bumo after a footballing lesson at the Etihad Stadium. Fernando Torres made his first start and Dobbie was recalled and Messi left on the bench after only just recovered from a knock picked up against Tottenham.
It was the worst start for Swansea as they were behind after 15 minutes as James Milner's cross was tapped in by Sergio Aguero. By the half-hour mark they were three down and Aguero was involved again as his header was parried by Vorm straight to Edin Dzeko to tap in. The third was a flowing move as Kolarov played a one-two with David Silva on halfway and broker clear before finding Aguero who, with a first time cross, found the head of Dzeko to make it 3-0 at half-time.
Mark Gower gave Swansea a lifeline after half-time curling a lovely free-kick from 30 yards out but ten minutes later and the Champions were out of sight. Marek Hamsik scored his first city goal after pouncing on a poor backpass by Angel Rangel. The agony was completed in stoppage time as Williams brought down substitute Tevez and Aguero scored from the spot.

After the international break the Swans returned to action still with memories of the Etihad still quite fresh. Torres retained his starting spot and Messi was brought back in by the manager. Leon Britton made his first appearance of the season taking the place of Frank Lampard.
The Swans started slowly in a first half starved of chances but had a stroke of luck 35 minutes in as Kelvin Davis's attempt to punch away Hazard's corner bounced off Matt Kilgallon and into the net for an unfortunate own goal. 1-0 at half time.
Ten minutes after half time and it was 2-0 as Messi picked out Hernandez arriving at the back post and the Spanish international pounced with a diving header. Michu replaced Torres after 67 minutes and 5 minutes later was on the score sheet after controlling Hazard's cross and rounding Davis to score.
