Tactics and roles

I've been having difficulties in adjusting tactics and thinking how to improve the ones the games gives us.
Is there a place or could someone point me a good url to better understand tactics and roles? I've been playing this game since 98 and I'm ashamed to say I'm getting lost every year with this game. I want to improve on the tactical side since I don't have fun picking something standard, someone please give this 38 years old some help!
