TEAM THREAD: Playing Liverpool - A Tactical Discussion Thread

Gents, trying to re-create the 'Dalglish lopsided 4-4-2' on FM but honestly, no idea where to start...

Anyone...

Just downloaded the latest LFC Marshall update

Haven't been on this forum in a while and am needing help...

Need 3 tactics; 4-2-3-1, 4-2-2-2 and 4-3-3

reason am asking is because since i haven't been on here in a while there might of been a few new tactics that are good :)

Ah, weeks later, still struggling with Liverpool 5/6 saves and a few weeks further on, can't get any higher than a 7th place finish (which I guess is about as realistic as you can get). Anyone managed a champions league spot or better in the first season yet? Tried lots and lots of different tactics and found out a few more things. People to sell and how much you can get for them (all in euros):

N'Gog (6 million)
Kuyt (12 million)
Greek (2.8 million)
Rodriguez (5.75 million)

That adds 26 million roughly to your original budget so I know that technically, with the right transfers and roughly a 50 million war chest, winning the league in the first season SHOULD be possible.

best combination for Carroll and Suarez is available on iNickstuff's thread for modern target man and modern complete forward respectively.

I would suggest don't sell Lucas, he's the most consistent player on my game. I sold Babel, Jova, Poulsen, and some other youngsters to get Hulk & Miguel Veloso.
My best LFC tactic can be found here (played at Old Trafford and beat the host 0-7) :)

How about Baines for LB ? :D

I pretty much always play 4-2-4 with them, seems to get me the best outcome over a season.(Currently on my 10th season won 7 of the last 9)

My team is pretty much regens now with players like carroll still around but barely able to push for a constant first team spot.

Start of the first season I like to try and get Elia, around 12-15mil depends on what arsenal do.
Lorenzo De Silverstri I like to sign too for LB, always does great for me in my saves.
Pick up santon and thiago on a free if I can, santon makes for amazing cover at FB, thiago is never a bad player to sign seeing as though you can get him for free.

So usually around 20mil spent with signing on/agent fees hits around 25mil.
N'Gog and kuyt I offload in first transfer window if I can, N'Gog picks up 5-7.5mil kuyt usually around 8-10mil.
Maxi I sell in january, gives him time to play and helps to offload him at a higher price, get around the same amount as I do for kuyt.

That extra 22ish mil then goes on a RW and CB depending on who I go for, usually get a young CB so often fairly inexpensive 4-5mil at most.

Ok well at the moment I am currently doing a season with two of my mates. I am Liverpool and the others are Man Utd and Arsenal. First season I did poorly, finished 6th, didnt win anything and got into Europa League. Second season I finished 3rd mkaing more of a title race, got into champions league and got into the League Cup and FA Cup Finals losing both times to Arsenal. We are just at the start of the third season and I just lost 5-1 to Man City away but I have a game in hand to get the same points as everyone else. My mates have slipped up with is good. However I have only beaten Man Utd once and Arsenal never. I cant tell why I can't beat them even though they are human controlled. I am using a 4-4-2 Treble Winning Tactic which I got from here a long time ago but I thought it would still work, maybe it doesn't. So I am here looking for a tactic that works specifically with Liverpool FC.

So glad that all you guys experience the same issue with Carroll and Suarez.

I finished 3rd in my first season on the 11.3 patch with the reds playing a standard 4-4-2 , albeit modified, and a standard 4-5-1, again modifed. The big problem is that I want to play a short passing game, but in doing so Carroll did not score 1 header in the entire season. I even set up a load of players to play direct and cross to target man but because I played a short passing game they just never did. I had Carroll as Target and Suarez as poacher. Suarez scored 16 goals in the season, not too shabby but sooo often he would get terrible ratings for games, often going as low as the 5.2 area, especially playing up top on his own. Cant remember how many Carroll got but was probably about 12-13 ish. To get Carroll to play well you would need to set up tactics like non league teams-not gonna do it. The big problem I find and apart from the Carroll/Suarez issue is that players who play in accomplished positions and not natural just do not perform to the standard you want and with the liverpool players this makes it so hard to select a formation.

What I am going to try is the 4-2-3-1 Asymetric formation, has anyone tried this? This way Lucas, Meireles, Gerrard, and Kuyt play in their natural positions. I found that everytime I used an AML or R with just central midfielders I got seriously punished down the wings as there is no cover. Having a defensive midfielder will also help with away games. I also bought M'Vila and played him in the 442 and he just did not perform because he is only accomplished, with his natural position a DM. So my team will be:

-----------------REINA----------------
JOHNSON---CARRA---AGGER---AURELIO
---------------------LUCAS------------
-----------MEIRELES--------COENTRAO
KUYT---------------GERRARD----------
----------------SUAREZ-----------

I will also prepare the reverse tactic so i can have an AML which could be Suarez and have Carroll up top. Then I can use 442 at home and this one for away and tough home games. The game unfortunately does not allow a passing game to be played with lots of crosses for Carroll. It seems to determine that a passing game means you want to walk the ball in the net. What ever happened to mixed passing?

I'm using the 11.3 patch but doing pretty well. Although im just 10 games into my first season im trailing chelsea by 3 points and clear of spurs by 5 points. Suarez certainly isnt a wasted talent on the wing! i would recommend playing extremely direct but focus passing down both wings that way you get the best out of our £35m man :)

I also want to recommend Eden Hazard to replace Kuyt on the right, he is by far my best player so far this season and has the ability to create more chances for Carroll than Kuyt can.

I'm using an updated database with adam and downing etc...

How would I got about making a tactic where it utilises the midfield quality and the ability of Carroll, because I've tried multiple times and I can't make a tactic where Carroll scores a lot of goals and it really frustrates me.
Any Help would be a appreciated!

Could give this a try, look at how he's done with Llorente, who is a pretty similar player to Carroll.

  • Works 4 me, won the PL first season and on my way to winning again. You might see that i am playing young players, i don't know why but it's a good thing right?

Anyone willing to test out a tactic designed around Liverpool for me? I've not got the time atm to give it a proper test. If so, give me a private message. Just played 2 EPL games so far, away at Old Trafford, won 3-1, and then against NUFC at home, won 5-0 with Suarez getting 4.
