Basically, I won everything with my Southend side.

What I did was this:

Assign chairman to hire DOF and manage his contract
Assign DOF to all but training and first team.
Assign training and first team to Assistant.
Check use my tactic and accept all offers for players on holliday screen.
Went on holliday from preseason day one till day after last match of the season.
