What I find works around 80% of the time is creeping up from your initial bid to the negotiated offer very slowly.
E.g. Your bid was £10M, theirs was £22M. Next offer will be £12M, then theirs will come down, or go up, a couple of £M. Just creep up slowly and eventually you will meet somewhere between the two figures.

What I do is make a bid say £10M if they reject completely make a bid in instalments of say £15m and they usually either accept or negotiate a deal that doesn't have instalments
