Poor performance today, i think credit to City as they learned from their mistakes from a couple of weeks ago.

Very surprised by the performance. I don't remember City goal keeper making a single save and stats say Chelsea didn't record even a single shot on target.

Quite a lot IIRC. Why wouldn't there be away fans?

On the game, City were excellent and we were extremely poor. Allowed them too much time and space in the middle and they exploited that. Not really the ideal game for Mikel in that regard, couldn't get around the pitch and cover the spaces, but you can't really blame him as being aggressive and mobile isn't really him.

Shocking going forward, City did well to press our attackers and Cahill and Luiz look so dodgy as a partnership. Both made mistakes that could've easily led to goals.

Luiz is poor in any partnership. He must not be allowed to play CB. When your attacking attributes are better than your defensive ones, how the **** can you call yourself a Defender?

Our strongest partnership is JT + Cahill. One missing and we're ******.

Beating City twice within 2 week at their pad was always going to be a tough ask. Just got to use this 6 day rest for the best and get JT back.

Totally agree, its so concerning we rely on a 33 year old!

In your opinion.

I like Luiz with Terry, and Cahill with Terry in recent months. He's been impeccable since the turn of the year.

Worry not - Zouma is a ******* wall. If the transition goes smoothly he should be a massive, massive adition to your defense.

Hey, Roberto Carlos was a defender! Technically!

You don't need to know how to defend when you can break the laws of physics.

...late 90s wingback died for a reason.

Only in Europe, and that reason was a tactical shift away from 3 man defences. The likes of Christian Maggio and Camilo Zuniga and so on and so forth in the Italian league where 3 man defences are coming back into fashion are every bit as attacking as those classical Brazilian wingbacks.

Plus, it's not like they have stopped producing those, there are literally tens of South American fullbacks that are every bit as attacking as the old-fashioned ones, and not only in Brazil and Italy, although most of them play there. I'm thinking of Marcelo, Alves, Adriano, Luis Filipe, Armero, the aforementioned Zu?iga, Maicon (although he's arguably part of that generation), Inter's Jonathan (although I personally think he's *****), Peruzzi (I've lost track of him, though, haven't watched many Catania games), Lichtsteiner...

Not quite, Brazil and Galacticos commonly played with 4-man at the back. Wing backs being the only wide players, they were usually battling each other, so it was often just the battle of lungs.

Nowadays you would get murdered with only one wide player, especially the one who can't even defend.

There's a few misconceptions here.

Brazil played a 4 man defence about as much as they did 3 man defences. They played with Cafu and Carlos on either flank in 1998 in a four man, and then in 2002 they played with a 3 with Cafu and Carlos as wing backs.

To say that late 90s wingbacks couldn't defend is grossly underestimating them. Nobody ever said the likes of Carlos couldn't defend, just that their best attributes were attacking. It's the reason why Leighton Baines isn't a defensive liability despite being a better offensive player than he is defensive.

Besides all that, as mentioned by Athe~ there's not too many differences between, say, Stephan Lichtsteiner's style of play and Cafu's. In fact, Lichtsteiner is probably more attacking than Cafu was, for instance, and Juve aren't getting murdered despite only playing one wide player on each flank.

But this is the wrong thread! I don't see Mou playing any wing backs any time soon, though I've got to say even with my well documented love of Cesar Azpilicueta he's really impressing and flourishing at left-back. His linkups with Hazard are pretty fearsome.

Eden Hazard was asked in an interview with Bein Sports today Hazard at Real Madrid? And his reply was simply "Hazard at Chelsea"

Cracking game so far, both teams showing a lot of grit, we're getting the best chances but against a Mourinho side that counts for jack all if you don't take them.
