From a Chelsea perspective it is a positive thing no doubt but I just find it stupid as Mata is definitely better than some of the attacking midfielders who did get selected

Well, only Silva plays a similar role to Mata and I think they're pretty well matched if you ask me. The rest of their midfielders (excluding the untouchable ones) either play deeper (Beñat, who will warm the bench anyways) or will be deployed out wide (Navas and possibly Cazorla).

//Edit - Just so we're clear here, personally I'd make some space for Mata, but at the end of the day it's Del Bosque's choice.

Personally id take Mata,

but with Cazorla, Silva, Fabregas, Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Alonso, Navas ETC ... there is so much competition,

Look at Arteta, very good player, never even had a look in

To be fair though Mata is effective deployed out wide as well and I would surely have taken him ahead of Cazorla/Silva. Silva is an excellent player but a tad overrated if you ask me... Mata did just as well as Silva last season despite playing in a much worse team and by all accounts has done better than him this season so far

No it wasnt, it was pretty obvious the system wasn't working. If anything the whole big man thing was with alex and anelka, which was after lampard was dropped.

Sections of the media portrayed it as being the big man, because for some reason Lampard was deemed untouchable for club and country and dropping him was unthinkable.

The Alex and Anelka thing is someone looking bad which may have not been his fault. Of course Lampard can be dropped if he merits the drop like now

Can someone please tell me how Mata is not good enough for the Spanish squad? 4 goals and 6 assists in the last 5 games. World-class player who would get into the team of any other country easily

Been MOTM in every game since he come back so **** it, works in our favour. Just need the English lads to retire now and i'll be happy.

Given what happened to malouda, you may well be correct that it was someone else. But im just saving AVB was entitled to drop lampard, and wasnt really out of order doing so, and yet was vilified for it. Like i said before, many things that AVB did make mistakes on, on and off the pitch. But he did very little wrong with Lampard.

You might see that Carl re Lmaprd, not many others do. Why else is he still playing a role for England that we both know isn't his best position. And look how Mikel gets slammed for Lampard's mistakes.

Meh we got 3 massive games coming up after the international break so it's a good thing that arguably our best player has the week off

Most fans like now would accept Lampard being dropped if it benefits the team but it didn't back then. I agree he does not suit the role for both club and country but against the smaller sides he will still do a very good job.

I thinks fans are entitled to not be happy about a decision (plenty of games where i disagree about us starting Giggs) but AVB didn't actually do anything wrong in terms of dropping him, he is entitled to say he didn't fit the system etc, but he didn't actually treat him badly in the way its been made out.

but yes I very much agree about Lampard and smaller sides.

Looks like I was wrong. Cole has been charged by FA

As the final part in my series about Chelsea's double pivot, I'll be looking at a player who many are tipping to be the successor to Frank Lampard and a future regista: Oscar. It's easy to be skeptical: he's Brazilian, diminuitive and full of flair. That's not the type of player one would normally expect to see dictating play from deep and helping to run an industrious midfield. A quick look at Oscar's stats in the last 3 games he's played for Chelsea however, and that doubt starts to gently fade away.

His creative stats are what we would expect of him. 6 key passes in 3 games, in a side that fields a lot of other creative players, is very solid and 5 dribbles isn't bad either, especially considering that he was fielded centrally in 2 of those games.

What really stands out though, is his defensive contribution. He's successfully completed 8 tackles in these 3 games, which is pretty exceptional for an attacking midfielder. This is very encouraging for those that want to see Oscar paired with Mikel, but a regista's primary defensive means of defense is arguably performed through his reading of the game and excellent positioning. Luckily, Oscar has also managed to successfully intercept the ball 6 times.

Oscar's obvious defensive talent bodes well for his reinvention as a deeper player but the most convincing sign is something that stats can't capture: his workrate. Rather like his compatriot Ramires, Oscar wants the ball. His pressing and workrate when he's tracking back is truly outstanding for an attacking midfielder and is comparable to the ethos that has driven Barcelona to greatness in recent times. With this enthusiasm comes a certain degree of scrapiness- he has made some awkward tackles and picked up a few needless yellows- but if he can use the ample time he has before he hits his peak to iron out these little defects, it looks as if Oscar has the potential to be the world class regista that Chelsea need.

He will get a fine. Nothing more.

I don't get these "charges". They're just so plucked from the air at random (to me anyway). Should change to a format of weeks and fines instead of match bans.

I totally disagree with you on this statement. I can name a lot of diminutive players who have been brilliant regista's- the best example being Gianni Rivera. Who was the archetypal Regista. And he was a tiny player and full of flair.

I could get you the rule book, but you'd be bored after 5 minutes. Think the reason its not done in weeks is because of way we play games, and the international calendar. One player banned for a week might not miss a game, another could miss 3.

I've read some immensley boring things in my time believe me-would be nothing lol.

Fair point about the ban-should've thought about that. They've got themselves in this mess though and it's about time it was sorted. It's such a self inflicted mess it's unreal

A fine was never in doubt, it will be the amount which will interest me. They believe 45k is fare for a racist re-tweet so this should in theory be less.
£15,000 i would guess. I'd be amazed if it was higher than Ferdinand's whose fine was set at the higher level. And it wasnt deemed a racist tweet. Same way Terry's charge wasnt. The distinctions are very important, though they are completely lost on the media.

I agree but you have to remember that this is tailored towards an English market. I think you only have to look at our treatment of Carrick and Scholes to see why I was trying to gently suggest that you can make a good defensive contribution/be a potent figure in midfielder without being overly strong.
