Chelsea v Valencia: five things we learned in the Champions League | Jamie Jackson | Football | The Guardian

Why does it seem like half of this was was written weeks ago and half was written by someone occasionally glancing over at the game like your doddery old nan does whenever she hears a big "oooh" in Coronation Street? The Guardian is starting to really get polarised between quality journalism from Wilson, Ronay and the Football Weekly crowd and terrible, troll baiting pieces from David Pleat, Kevin McCarra etc.

I had to take Richard Wilson to task the other week for slagging Zamora off because he doesn't score enough goals and half way through I thought "hang on, aren't you meant to be telling me what's going on?!" Sad to see sensationalism and snap judgements take the place of real analysis.

I commented on it. its a **** article. ill repost what i thought.

Chelsea were decent tonight without doing anything special. But I doubt they care, they got the result they needed. For 65 minutes we saw the Drogba of old, kinda forgot how could he could be. Romeu was classy tonight, dont know what match Jamie Jackson was watching. Chelsea have gem of a player there. Another English team through, lets hope the two Manchester sides can join them

The only defensive difference was the centre backs dropping back, the full backs still pressure high up the pitch. Against the Valencia set up the deep CB tactic is highly effective, not quite sure we can read that much into it.

What have we learned about Luiz? He played the same exceptional defensive display he produced at the Mestalla. All I've had confirmed tonight is that Luiz and Terry are far more comfortable versus a lone striker and channel running attacking midfielders in oppose to 2 strikers or wingers that stay wide.

I mean the key thing for me tonight was pressure in the midfield, Ramires/Meireles/Romeu all pressed the ball well and were generally the first to a loose ball. Something the midfield does lack with Lampard in there.

Sturridge's pace was a constant threat, but his positional play off the ball and tracking of Alba was still below par. Drogba finally pulled out a performance, his best in close to a year, and held the ball up well.

Ivanovic did well, but I still worry about him up against pacey wingers he just seems to lack acceleration more than anything else. Not taking anything away from Iva, he is a fantastic defender.

As for the AVB post match comments, very Mourinho/Fergie esque response. It's the whole 'we get special treatment from officials and/or the media' to get the us against the world spirit in the dressing room. Very clever man management tool.

With the greatest respect to AC Milan, they would be my perfect round of 16 draw for Chelsea. They just can not cope with high tempo football and if you put competent centre backs up against Ibra, as much as I do love Ibra, he does often fold under pressure.

Impressive display tonight, for the first time this season it was a solid performance all round. Clearly the Anelka/Alex situation has had little or no effect on the dressing room, time to see if Drogba can build on this or be carried by the rest of the team for another 4 games before Torres is back...

agree with some of this except:

I wouldnt call Luiz's display exceptional. For a defender of his calibre this is how he should be defending. But you are right he needs to learn against 2 men up front

Ivanovic should be at CB, hes no slouch for a CB, but at RB you just worry a little.

Sturridge needs to learn to pass

I'd say good rather than decent: we looked tight around the back; we got the right mix of adventure and caution; our passing was a lot quicker and more ambitious. Romeu is looking like class though ^^

The reason i say decent is that Valencia were poor, and not necessarily because you made them look that way, they really didnt attempt to ask many questions of you. But again having said that, who cares? You can only play whats in front and you won 3-0

Any game where Luiz doesn't get sent off, is exceptional for me. He does need to produce that week in week out, but I didn't see him set a foot wrong tonight.

I just read the article, can not believe the Romeu analysis. He slipped up on the ball once tonight and that was down to lack of composure which he will develop as he matures. To say he was responsible for a 30 yard drive and that he is suspect is just ridiculous.

If he was still at Barcelona he would have slotted straight into their lineup tonight with Cuenca/Roberto and co, so how you can say Romeu is a liability is beyond me. Also for the writer to claim that tonight was his audition is just ridiculous, it's his second European appearance for Chelsea already and has already proved how capable he is in other games.

But saying that I don't think we can get carried away with this result tonight, Soldado is a fairly static target to mark outside of the box and Chelsea played with 3 midfielders who were all capable of playing holding midfield. That can't be the set up every week, it's no precedent, but against Valencia that is a near perfect tactical set up so of course tonight the congratulations should come in. Against Manchester City with their fluid and constant movement across the front, tonight's setup would probably get torn apart.

The article was blatantly pre-written with a Chelsea loss in mind. Joke.

Luiz produced a great defensive display tonight, obviously no journo would praise him but he really needs to do this week in and out... very responsible today at the back as noticed due to his lack of surging runs but i doubt AVB would have encouraged him to make so many anyways, either way it was a good display by him

The midfield was excellent... Romeu was class and he broke up so many attacks, Meirles and Ramires pressed the ball well and put in decent shifts, all in all we did not leave too much space between the lines for Valencia to exploit and that worked well for us

Agreed Romeu lost the ball sometimes or failed to clear under pressure tonight which is unlike him but give the lad a break... he hardly played a top-flight match last season and this season he is in the first team for Chelsea and playing in a crucial Champions League Tie, the fact that he was starting despite playing against Newcastle shows how much faith AVB has in the lad and we have a real gem of a player there

Sturridge as we discussed earlier needs to learn to pass the ball, its good that he has the confidence to take on the whole defence by himself but as we said, on his day he can be class but on other days he wastes chances

Ivanovic is a fantastic defender, granted he is no Bosingwa in attack but he is a much more well-rounded RB than Bosingwa... would have him as our first-choice RB any day

Mata was sublime as usual... created some good chances and he is by far our most important player these days

Drogba was magnificent... held the ball up well and had some lethal finishing to boot and pulled in a great performance, he looked like his old self for 60min

Terry was solid as always.... clearing balls out of the box, a true leader on the pitch, nobody mentions him but imagine our defence without him

Luiz did very well defensively, he was lot disciplined and didn't go for his trademark runs very often. Drogba is still a beast of a player. It was laughable when people here moan when Drogba starts ahead of Torres, half arsed Drogba contributes more than Torres and there are only very few players who can match him physically.

Drogbas strength and ability to use that strength to keep hold of the ball has been a key so far in this game. Torres does not posses the strength Didier does and imo if Torres started tonight he would of struggled to get in the game in that first half.

the way we played against Valencia does not suit Torres game at all... understandable why AVB went with Drogba, its was obvious we were content to sit back and soak up the pressure letting them pass the ball around but eliminating the spaces they could exploit by reducing the space between our lines and then breaking on the counter, this tactic was ideal for Drogba as we could hoof the ball to him and he had the strength to hold it until Mata, Sturridge and Ramires arrived... also the Valencia Defence could not deal with his physicality so I agree with you in saying that Drogba should have started over Torres

Its not that AVB does not have faith in Torres guys, playing Torres just for the sake of playing him is stupid... this game was ideal for Didier

A deal has been agreed between Anelka and Chinese Outfit Shanghai Shenhua to take Anelka to China...Confirmed on Sky Sports

Anelka Deal Agreed

I would just like to say that Anelka's ability has never been in doubt but unfortunately times have changed and its time for new players to take the mantle, Thank you for your efforts while playing with us Anelka and best of luck in China which is not a bad place to slow down your career at all

At times I have said some bad things about Anelka especially on this forum but I am grateful for all the goals he has scored in a Chelsea shirt and all the good performances he put in especially in the 2008/09 season in which he won the premier league golden boot and was just fantastic for Chelsea. In the end worth the £15 million Chelsea paid for him back in 2008.

agreed, he is not a Chelsea Legend in any sense but his time in a blue shirt will be remembered fondly no doubt...

It is Anelkas dream to play for every football club in the world at least once by the time he dies
