I think that pretty much all of our games this season have been the perfect example of why we need "another Mata". When he's been fatigued, we've been ****. When he's been marked out of the game, we've been ****. When he's had a bad day, we've been ****. Placing all the creative responsibility for a squad on one player without having anything close to a decent replacement on the bench is not the way to go about building a team that pushes for trophies domestically and in Europe. Of course we could go back to playing a very physical midfield with a massive centre forward and two relatively strong wingers/inside forwards but that seems to fly in the face of everything that's been happening at the club, like the short passing, the purchase of Marin, the purchase of Torres etc.

So we either need a winger that can create like Hazard, Willian etc to present another creative threat on the wing, a really creative AM so that Mata can go back to the wing (everyone seems to have rejected this idea but IMO it's going to be much harder to find someone that offers everything he does from out wide than it is to find a decent AM...) or a deeper lying maestro to dictate the tempo from further down the pitch, and allow us to play out from the back more reliably.

Personally I'd like to see a playmaker like Modric who sits in the bottom 2 of a 4-2-3-1 and distributes the ball. At the moment, Mata is often forced way back to start moves off, or they fizzle before he can really get involved. A noticeable thing about the game vs Lpool in the FA cup was how high up Mata played initially, but as the game wore on he started coming deeper and wider more and more which reduced his threat up front. That's why you want the guy that calmly dictates the tempo to be a different guy to the one that plays the final ball, the two jobs almost fundamentally require players to be in different positions to be effective, and to ask 1 man to do that is going to end up exhausting him and reducing his impact on the game.

Not to mention the fact that by having a Modric type in midfield, you're going to be able to keep a hold of the ball without pulling wingers or AMs too far back to help with retention. The game against Man United was a glaringly obvious example of this, if we'd had someone playing that role we'd have been home and dry.

That hair has gone mad lol, the man is just pure class. He got slated a lot in his first year but he is getting better with every game.

I personally though he was better last season than he was under AVB this season... He reminded me of Pique (when he was playing well)

Not seen an obscene amount of matches he's played under RDM though so I couldn't say how is now.

Has become more of a safety first but still goes on random runs every now and again.

He was Jose's right hand during that time, he is probably the best assistant manager we've had. He is class.

And btw, what's with that Yaya Toure rumour? An agent's blah blah again?

Apparently Yaya feels he has achieved all he can at City :/ what about the CL surely City will want to try and win that in the next few years.
