Celtic never put a clause in the contract that was violating their rule. It was between the clubs, but Celtic had no power to enforce them to not play Bangoura. Celtic could have asked them to not play him, but Elfsborg would only have done it out of respect rather than obligation. By forcing Atletico to pay you to play him, you're preventing them from playing him, which is against their rules.

Then I really don't see why the clause was put in the loan deal? Oh well we may not even have to face atletico anyway.

Should be good but very tough match, would like the English team to go through but just think Madrid will edge it.

Worst possible draw IMO. Would have preferred Bayern. At least we are playing at home in the 2nd match. It would be a shame if Courtois would not be allowed to play, and i think he will resent the club if that happens, which would be a very bad move, if he is to be Cech's replacement.

Would have been very tough to beat RM and Bayern over 2 legs. Not that I fancy our chances against Atletico either but they are still comparitively better. Very tough match up

Would have been better against Real or Bayern because those are attacking teams, while Atletico is playing just like us.
Question is: how do you counter-attack a team that is based on counter-attack? They will be "forced" to attack first leg, and we on the 2nd, or else it will be a staring contest.

Bruce Buck and Ron Gourlay both clear that we will let Courtois play regardless of the clause.

Edit: I realize everyone's going to come at me saying they don't have a say and are forced to. RUN RUN RUN.

Right decision imo

Indeed. whether it's in a cynical or genuine way, it makes Chelsea looks good. Clubs remember things like this. When Chelsea inevitably go for Costa, things might end up being a fair bit easier.

Looks like those lawyers weren't so bright after all. If I'm reading this right, Chelsea ****** itself over by making the clause about money. If the agreement between the clubs simply states player can't play, UEFA will allow it (re: Celtic vs Elfsborg case). However if money needs to exchange hands for him to play it is apparently seen as an outside influence, and thus not allowed.

Either way, its a good decision.

As i said the other day i wasn't bothered who we got as all the sides wouldn't want to play us. Must say this is a very interesting tie although between two sides from different countries Atletico play like an English team so expect a battle!
On the Courtois thing i personally couldn't care less if he plays, in fact i think its fair if he does play as he has been one of the main reasons Atletico are where they are. My problem is with Uefa (obviously) who intervened and said the contract between us and Atletico was "void". Funny they never said that last season with Celtic player on loan to Elfsborg Bangura and there were quoted as saying "any contract between clubs has nothing to do with us".

I wonder why it does on this occasion then Uefa? Is it because we are the monsters of football? Is it because you hate the English game? Or maybe its because we just knocked out Platini's darlings PSG in the quarter finals!
In fact i love it, keep it up Uefa because whenever you kick Chelsea we come back and mow you down with our dog spot and defy football logic!

UTC!

Tyton makes it clear. It's the money bit that makes the difference.

Either way getting ahead of it was the smart thing to do by Chelsea

Exactly ... Plus I rather not resort to such underhand tricks to win games if it can be helped
