Fulham appoint Powell

View attachment 361813

Fulham Football Club have today announced that Charlton manager Chris Powell will take over the team at the end of the month following the departure of Martin Jol to French club Olympique de Marseille.

43-year-old Powell joins the Craven Cottage side on a one-year contract following two and a half years in charge of Charlton Athletic. The former English international took charge at The Valley in January of 2011 with the club struggling in nPower League One. Powell made 19 first-team signings in his first Summer in charge and his side sealed promotion back to the nPower Championship as Champions at the end of his first full season in charge. In the club's first season back in the nPower Championship, they finished in 9th position - just three points under 6th place which heralds a play-off position. Powell had already started to strengthen his side for next season by securing the permanent signing of Mark Gower from Swansea City. However, the former full-back will now leave the club to take over Barclays Premier League side Fulham.

The Craven Cottage side finished in 12th place in the 2012-2013 season - just seven points above a relegation spot. After a mid-season struggle, Fulham's form improved towards the end of the season under Dutchman Martin Jol. However, the former Ajax manager has now decided to quit the club in favour of a move to Southern French side Olympique de Marseille who hold a spot in the 2013-2014 UEFA Champions League. Fulham Chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed moved quickly following Jol's departure to secure a deal with Charlton Athletic for the services of Chris Powell and has reportedly made funds available for the 42-year-old.

57-year-old Martin Jol had already signed Derek Boateng, Maarten Stekelenbug and Fernando Amorebieta for Fulham before leaving and Powell is reportedly impressed with Amorebieta and Stekelenburg - although remains skeptical of Boateng and may yet look to let the midfielder go just weeks after he signed for the club.

Pre-season
Positive start for Powell

View attachment 361819

Chris Powell had a positive start to his reign at Fulham Football Club as the club won all six of their pre-season friendlies and secured the signature of four of the brightest youth talents in European and South American football.

Argentinian midfielder Ezequiel Cirigliano was the first player to transfer to Craven Cottage this Summer as new manager Chris Powell secured his signature for a mere £3.5 million. Cirigliano had impressed scouts from Real Madrid and Roma before Powell made contact with Argentinian club River Plate and agreed to sign the player on a four-year contract. Derby County youngster Will Hughes then joined Fulham Footall Club for a fee of around £4 million as Chris Powell had experienced the 18-year-old's skill first-hand last season in the nPower Championship. The midfielder signed a three-year-deal at Craven Cottage. Scottish striker Tony Watt then joined Chris Powell's side for a fee similar to that of Cirigliano and will compete with Hugo Rodallega for a starting place following Dimitar Berbatov's departure. Italian Serie B side Palermo then lost an integral part of their side as Spanish centre back Ezequiel Munoz joined Fulham for a fee of £3 million and signed a four-year contract.

Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov left Craven Cottage as French side AS Monaco coughed up £13 million for the 32-year-old striker. He signed a three-year deal worth £100,000 a week. Defender Aaron Hughes was the next to leave Fulham as fellow-Londoners Crystal Palace paid £2 million for his services. Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen are currently in talks with Fulham manager Chris Powell over the potential transfer of midfielder Derek Boateng for a fee of between five and ten million pounds.

Perfect month for Powell

View attachment 361826
Chris Powell's first competitive month in charge at Fulham Football Club provided confidence for their fans as they maintain a 100% record going into September. Powell also secured another four signatures as he allowed three players to leave permanently while seven others left on loan.

Manchester City midfielder Javi Garcia secured a season-long loan at Craven Cottage following a disappointing first season at the Etihad Stadium. Fulham will pay Garcia £25,000 in wages and have an option to permanently sign the player for £7 million at any point during the loan spell. Scotsman Paul Caddis then secured a move to Craven Cottage for £2.2 million and will provide competition down the right-hand side as he can play in defence and midfield. Crewe midfielder Luke Murphy then signed at Craven Cottage as Powell beat Everton and West Bromwich Albion to the 23-year-old's signature for a fee of £3.5 million. In Powell's last piece of transfer business, Real Madrid goalkeeper Antonio Adan joined for a fee of £2 million to compete with Dutchman Stekelenburg for the number one jersey at Craven Cottage.

Ghanaian midfielder Derek Boateng left Craven Cottage just weeks after signing for Bayer Leverkusen as the German side paid a fee of £7 million for his signature. Chris Powell reportedly decided Boateng had no future at Fulham and sold the player for funds to sign other players. Experienced winger Damien Duff then joined newly-promoted Cardiff City for £2 million as Powell has obviously decided to play youth over experience. 30-year-old midfielder Steve Sidwell moved North to join Newcastle United for £3.8 million as he was replaced in the squad by new recruit Luke Murphy. Jack Grimmer, Alex Brister, Mesca, Neil Etheridge, David Stockdale, Dino Islamovic and Jesse Joronen joined Yeovil, Luton Town, Brentford, Fleetwood Town, Brighton, Sheffield United and Burton Albion respectively on loan deals.

In the first Barclays Premier League game of the season, Fulham played host to Chelsea as the Blues visited Craven Cottage on the 18th of August. In a game which both sides had new managers, Powell came out on top against Mourinho as his side ran out 4-1 winners. Young Spanish defender Ezequiel Munoz scored on his debut to give Chelsea the lead as he headed home Will Hughes' corner. In the 38th minute, Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia played a through ball to Turkish winger Kerim Frei who slotted under Petr Cech to double Fulham's lead. Just after half-time, Spanish starlet Juan Mata crossed for Eden Hazard to half Fulham's lead and boost Chelsea's hopes of a comeback. In the 51th minute, Scottish striker Tony Watt slid Will Hughes through to hit home and restore Fulham's two goal lead. Twenty minutes later, defender Brede Hangeland rounded off the scoring as he headed home Kacaniklic's corner.

Eight days later, Fulham travelled to Carrow Road to face Norwich City. On a warm afternoon, Fulham ran out 2-0 winners thanks to a brace from Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia. In the 55th minute, Garcia smashed home as Norwich failed to clear Will Hughes' corner. Twenty minutes later, Kerim Frei's corner caused more chaos in the Norwich box and 26-year-old Garcia was on hand to double Fulham's lead.

In the final game of the month, Fulham travelled to Priestfield to face nPower League One side Gillingham in the Second Round of the Capital One Cup. A much-weakened side was chosen by Chris Powell and in just the 14th minute, Kieran Richardson slid in youngster Pajtim Kasami to slot home. On the stroke of half-time, young full-back Matthew Briggs crossed from deep and Hugo Rodallega nodded home to round off the scoring.

Powell continues good start at Fulham

View attachment 362138

Chris Powell's positive start at Craven Cottage continued into the month of September as his side remained undefeated and progressed into the Fourth Round of the Capital One Cup after a fantastic first month for Scottish striker Tony Watt South of the border.

In the first game of the month, Southampton travelled to Craven Cottage in the third match of the Barclays Premier League season. After half an hour, youngster Will Hughes' cross was nodded home by experienced defender Brede Hangeland to give Fulham the lead. Minutes after half-time, Will Hughes' cut-back was intelligently slotted home by young striker Tony Watt to double Fulham's lead. In the dying minutes of the game, Southampton pulled a goal back. Serbian winger Zoran Tosic dribbled past three Fulham defenders and shot across goal to half Fulham's lead.

After a fortnight break for the club following International games, Aston Villa were the next visitors to Craven Cottage. Midfielder Will Hughes gave the home side the lead after Kacaniklic's smart pass through to the 18-year-old. In the 73rd minute, former Swindon midfielder Paul Caddis played a long ball forward in Tony Watts' direction. The young striker took the ball down, swivelled and smashed home to double Fulham's lead. And just three minutes later, Watt grabbed his second of the game. Caddis was again the supplier as he crossed from the right-hand side for Watt to climb above the Villa defenders and head home to round off the scoring.

In the fifth Barclays Premier League game of the season, Fulham travelled to South Wales to face struggling Swansea City. The Swans occupied 17th place in the Barclays Premier League table and were struggling for form due to their European commitments. An early strike from forward Tony Watt was the only goal of the game. Swedish winger Kacaniklic played the ball forward to Watt who turned one defender and smashed the ball home from 20 yards.

Three days later, nPower Championship side Watford made the trip to Craven Cottage in the Third Round of the Capital One Cup. A weakened starting eleven was named by the Barclays Premier League side as manager Powell felt confident of a win. In the 18th minute, former Sunderland winger Kieran Richardson crossed for Colombian forward Rodallega to head home. Just four minutes later, midfielder Dejagah passed to Rodallega who doubled his tally. On the half hour mark, Richardson's corner was headed home by Amorebieta to give Fulham a three goal lead. Just three minute later, Watford reduced the deficit. A horrendous error by Spanish goalkeeper Adan allowed striker Simeon Jackson to slot home into an empty net. In the 50th minute, Richardson's corner caused havoc in the Watford area before Kerim Frei smashed home to restore his side's three goal lead. Twenty three minutes later, Richardson grabbed a goal from himself. Young midfielder Kasami played the English winger through who slotted home to round off the scoring.

In the final game of the month, Fulham travelled to White Hart Lane to face rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The visitors took the lead just moments before half-time as Will Hughes played Scottish striker Tony Watt through who slotted under the on-rushing Lloris. Tottenham equalised just after the break as Welsh winger Gareth Bale laid off Belgian midfielder Fellaini who smashed home from the edge of the area. In the 70th minute, the home side were awarded a penalty as Kerim Frei was judged to have pushed Dempsey in the box. The former Fulham midfielder stepped up and slotted home to score against his former club. Just minutes later, Watt scored a stunner to level the scoring. The Scottish striker stole the ball from defender Naughton and ran clear through on goal. As French keeper Hugo Lloris stormed out of his goal to close down the former Celtic player, Watt neatly chipped the Spurs keeper from 25 yards out.

Any feedback? If anybody has possible improvements then feel free to suggest whatever - I'll consider everything!

I love this style but maybe when you make signings, bold the names so it stands out more? I think it is a great start so far though.

I'll look at doing that in the next transfer window mate, thanks a lot! Cheers for your comment!
