Let's see how long I can keep this up for :)

Welcome to my career game in FM09 9.3. I start off unemployed with automatic reputation and then see how far I can get. I use my real name (so hello, my name is Simon) and real age (31, 32 this April - old codger now :D), my real nationality (Welsh and then English) and my real first love in football - Liverpool.

Active leagues are English, Scottish, German, Welsh, Dutch, Spanish and Italian, all to the lowest level division and a large database. My computer is powered by a hamster on a wheel so processing can be time consuming - gives me an excuse to read anyways.

My rules are that I can't sign anyone who I don't come across in game (so no player or staff tipping please - and I will be mentioning all those I do by name so if it offends you, stop reading now :) ) and I only move clubs if it's a genuine career progression.

So database up and running, unemployed chosen, holiday mode - apply for anything and everything.

And I get this:

For some reason, Bognor Regis brings back memories of Russ Abbott singing it to the tune of Queen's Barcelona. It's an unsettling thought. Still, a job's a job and it's come quickly. 2k a week for player wages is shocking. No transfer budget. And a 60k debt which is being paid off at 4k a month until the end of December 2009. Oh, and 76 season ticket holders. In a 6000 capacity stadium with barely enough seats for them. There's basic training facilities, very basic youth facilities and the coaches double up as tea ladies, or is it that the tea ladies doubling up as coaches?

This should be interesting...

Well the media weren't lying about how good this team is. 22nd prediction?! With luck and some decent signings maybe!

There's 12k in the bank. That's not a lot. Sponsorship is only 5k a season. 2k limit on wages per week. Already £40 over. I think I may be stretching the board's patience financially by the end of the summer because the squad is thin enough as it is. There's only 26 players in the entire club (reserve team - what reserve team obviously). 4 of them are not actually on a contract, but they are worth keeping so I'll throw them one. There are five first teamers who are so bad I'll throw them on the transfer list (not that anyone will want to buy them but I've got to try to get the wages down to give me some room) and of the youth team, there's one player who looks anything like going to be half-decent. He's going to get promoted up to the first team p.d.q.

My sole scout can't scout. And I mean, I don't know who hired him in the first place but they obviously weren't looking for someone who could recommend anything worthwhile. So job offer goes in for one more scout. Can't afford to sack the one I've got now so he'll stay until his contract expires.

I have two assistant managers. Which is nice. One is decent but doesn't want to know about a new contract (so he should be off at the end of the season unless my board double or triple what they're willing to pay). The other is useless. There are two other coaches who are on specialist contracts. Can't afford that, so I'll give them better ones. No point sacking coaches - I'm allowed 2 full ones or the equivalent. At this level, I'm not going to get anyone better in just yet so I might as well keep things as they are.

One physio who couldn't diagnose a broken leg. But he'll have to do for now.

Training is the Tug's one and Boozemaster's addition to it. Really, I'd get better results if I could be bothered figuring out individual training regimes. Maybe an idea for tomorrow.

Tactics are my Benitez 4-4-2 variants. I don't have a left back worthy of the name, I really don't have a right winger, but there's no way in **** I'm going to risk playing anything other than 4-4-2 with these lemons. The tactics work well enough, although they won't work miracles, which is kind of what I need. Still, they'll make me hard to beat even if I won't be able to risk crossing the half-way line with the ball...

Stick at it mate and good luck. I did a similar thing a while back but lost patience with my Bromley side constantly finishing midtable and with little or no money.
Keep us informed

Thanks lads, Bognor job taken. Played a couple of pre-season games, won one and lost t'other. Will update properly later tonight after Liverpool match. They truly are awful though. And I mean really bad. Going to be a real struggle.

lol unlucky

:D It's the wage limit which is the killer. 2k wage limit even in the BSS is very low. If I remember rightly, my usual choice of lower league teams, Newport County has a 4k limit. And I push that a bit normally in order to get promotion in the first season. 2k just smells. And 76 season ticket holders is crazy considering the size of the stadium. :'(

good luck with this lol it is gonna get frustratig tho continuously losing and drawing.(im assuming this will happn as ur predictd 22)

Cheers. It probably will be a frustrating time at Bognor. But here goes...

Just how bad are Bognor? Well, if you didn't believe me, here's the verdict of the bookies:

simonwilliams.png

I reckon that bet's got to be worth a pound or two. :) 1000-1 for promotion. Hmm.

I'll introduce you to the squad when I can be bothered to sit down and analyse them in greater detail. But I've run through pre-season rather quickly. I've not been bothered about results, just getting the team used to the tactics, so I've played the standard variant with the defensive variant in matches which I was predicted to lose heavily in - primarily did that so I didn't get too much of a morale pounding for losing 8 or 9 nil :D

First up were Neath:

bognorregisvneath2.png

bognorregisvneath.png

I was predicted to lose this, so played the defensive variant and tonked them. Quite pleasing start.

Next up were Brighton, my 'parent' club with their annual pre-season friendly (they can also send players on loan to me when they choose...). So of course I played defensive, and with 40-1 odds on me winning I'll take this:

bognorregisvbrighton2.png

bognorregisvbrighton.png

Obviously I created nothing, but only conceding twice (and one of them from a penalty) is encouraging.

Heybridge came to Bognor. Predicted to win comfortably. And did so using the standard variant.

bognorregisvheybridge2.png

bognorregisvheybridge.png

Canvey Island were next on the list, and I got a bit tetchy about conceding first to them. But fortunately things worked out just fine without a single tinker to the tactics and my usual mass substitutions at 60 minutes.

bognorregisvcanveyislan.png

bognorregisvcanveyislan.png

Although I was predicted to lose heavily to Merthyr, I think I could have got a better result if I'd been bothered to change things tactically and played my best XI against them. But still, it's an ok result for pre-season and the post-match text was all about how amazing it was Merthyr fluked a win. No-one was injured that match at least :)

bognorregisvmerthyr2.png

bognorregisvmerthyr.png

Last match of pre-season was against Walton & Hersham. If I'd changed things, I'd have won but even so, the press claimed they were lucky to get anything out of the match, and it was my last chance to get the squad up to match fitness.

waltonhershamvbognorreg.png

waltonhershamvbognorreg.png

Not a bad pre-season on the injury front, no broken legs or hips which is always good. Team seems to be responding well to the tactics. I'll do a run-down on the squad once I've finalised it this last week before the season starts properly. And then the season begins with a home match with a home match against Basingstoke.

At least the board won't pressure me this season (H)

bognorregistown2.png

Good luck, I've started a game with Bath. Not as hard as Bognor Regis, I think I have twice your weekly wage allowance, but still the same division.

I won't tell you any names, but as a Blue Square manager to another Blue Square Manager I thought I'd mention a few useful things I've discovered managing Bath. You may consider it cheating so I'm warning you now that if you do just skip this paragraph. There are some good young players you can get really cheap (full contract £30pw with no transfer cost). There are also some good old international capped players. As I'm following similar guidelines, I found these players using scouts so you could too.

Anyway, good luck to you and I look forward to reading your next post.

Bognor Regis :D

See you did ok in your pre-season friendlies , and at a 1000-1 you can't really be dissapointed if you lose.

Keep us up to date if possible and good luck!

Going to concentrate on doing a few tactical set requests today and then will see if I can update with some squad info.

Thanks for the comments lads. Mavsworld - yeah, cheap players who are on low wages are great if you can get them first, or spot them with your scouts. Sadly the scout already at the club was useless and I've only just got another in but it's getting late now for any additions. Picked up a couple of freebies, but until I can clear the junk out then my wage bill is still way too high to even pick up 30 per week part-time players :(

nice one keep it up quite intresting read, making me think of doing one

Yeh, I guess it's quite hard to clear Bogner Regis players. If you can though, I picked up 3 ex premier league reserves on a free transfer each at £30pw in the first week of the season. Anyway look forward to hearing more. When I finish my Bath game you've inspired me to take Bogner Regis next.

I've got a couple of youngsters I've picked up, but nothing special sadly. "Come to Bognor Regis, we can't pay you and we're the bookies favourite for relegation under our new inexperienced manager our chairman found wandering lost outside the ground." :D

So let's have a look at the combination of youth and experience which makes up this great Bognor side (screenshots taken 5 matches into the season, review of August to follow - feel the suspense! ;) ):

Goalkeepers:

Chris Tardif was on a non-contract deal. I figured he's decent enough for this level and so tied him to a decent length contract. I obviously need a better keeper but beggars and chosers etc mean he'll have to do for the moment although the lack of depth to the squad in terms of keepers is very worrying. My main concern is his jumping attribute as combined with his 'average' height (for a keeper anyway) it means he's a tad vulnerable to the high ball. Hope Tardif is made of Teflon or something equally durable in any case, as I won't get much better this season.

christardif2.png

Tony Fallows is the better of the two youth keepers and so is my reserve keeper by default. If I thought he'd improve his first touch and handling, I'd be tempted to see how he develops. As it is, his first touch means I'll panic every time a back pass is played and his handling makes me suspect he'll struggle to catch a decent cold.

tonyfallows.png

Defenders

Duncan Jupp (D RC) is the team captain. His influence is pretty poor but can I afford to cause disharmony in this squad by changing him? Nope. At least he is determined which should help mitigate that less than stellar influence. He's obviously the best right back in the squad, and that's where I see him playing most of his games. Hopefully his experience will help him against any pacey wingers and I'm hoping it will also add a bit of nouse to a very young back line. He took a pay cut of 50 quid a week to stay on at the club, and as every little helps, I hope the rest of the team have learnt from that.

duncanjupp.png

Jack Smith (D/WB R) is a decent enough player. He's probably on a par skill wise with Jupp but as I have no right wingers at the club, I'm training him for that role and hoping he'll learn it fast. Solid player for this level and a decent back-up for Jupp.

jacksmith.png

Damian Hopkins (D RC) was a late free transfer at the end of August. Apparantly he's joint best central defender at the club. The lack of overall depth at the club means that he'll be playing every week he can. The fans were pleased he was signed, so I'm hoping he'll be a useful player for us as he has pace and aerial ability, despite looking like a bit of a liability in the tackle...

damianhopkins.png

Michael Byrne (D C) is the other top rated centre back at the club. He's fairly average in all departments to be honest, which is no bad thing as it means he's equally useless no matter the threat :D One thing he does have is a left foot which can kick a ball. Makes him my natural choice for the left side of central defence.

michaelbyrne.png

Patrick *** (D C) is the final centre half in the first team squad. Young and inexperienced (like the others...) and decidedly average. With Hopkins now at the club, he'll warm the bench at best and play a few reserve games to stay in shape. At least I hope so, as if he's in the first eleven it will mean I've got problems :D

patrickcox.png

Matt Smith (D L) is a summer freebie. The fans liked the signings. And so they should, he's quick and very adequate defensively. Although he's the second best left back at the club, he's actually going to be my first choice left back for the moment as the other left back is also the best left winger at Bognor...

mattsmith.png

Ben Fillery (D/M L) is both the best left back and the best left winger in the squad. I like him a lot for this level. Bit of pace, ok crossing, decent workrate etc. Would rather have a good attacking left winger with a better direct goal threat but for the moment Ben will do a job.

Midfield

Danny Smith (DM, M C) is team vice-captain and by far the best central midfielder at Bognor. Really, he's an ideal candidate for MCa but lack of a decent DMC means he'll have to play there. The big flaw in his game is the fact he can't head the ball. He can jump though, so here's hoping that someone else will tidy up the mess. Wasted at MCd I tell you, wasted!

dannysmith.png

Mark Jones (M C) is the sole youth player who looks like being of any use on a regular basis. He's slow and average even for this level, but he'll be a useful backup if nothing else this season.

markjones.png

Scott Chamberlain (AM LC) has two decent feet. He's really an out and out AMC but he'll be playing MCa for me. Another average player really although my worry is that he too is not much use in the air. My central midfield is going to struggle with long balls down the middle.

scottchamberlain.png

Gary Funnell (AM LC) is also an out and out AM C. If he had anything other than superb set piece taking, he'd be a regular. He'd also be playing a couple of divisions higher so swings and roundabouts on that one. He'll be backup this season. Passing of 3 for a midfielder is shocking.

garyfunnell.png

Harry Baker (AM R) is on loan from Leyton Orient for 3 months. As I have no wide midfielder in the squad it was a necessary signing. He's got a bit of quality for this level and although I'd like a bit more experience in the squad, I'm hoping his performances won't fluctuate too crazily so he could be a nice little signing for the short term.

harrybaker.png

Ben Palmer (M R) is a youth player at the club who has no future in the game. He is however the best candidate there to play a back up role, so he's got a couple of games already this season. He's not disgraced himself but neither has he excelled. The joys of a threadbare squad...

benpalmer.png

Forwards

Jahson Downes (ST) is the kind of all-round forward I like. He's on loan for the season from Reading. No idea how to say his name - did his parents mean Jason? Or is it pronounced Jar-son?! Anyways, I digress. He's a handy player to have despite the low long shot rating and the lack of creativity.

jahsondownes.png

Sam Gargan (ST) was a surprise present from my parent club Brighton. They sent him on a free season long loan just before the season started. He's big and fairly skillful for this level. I love him already in that non-homoerotic way in which I would gladly polish Nando's boots if it meant I got to meet his bird. Erm, yeah. Right, Sam is an obvious choice as my FCd and target man.

samgargan.png

Jones Awuah (ST) once got an international cap for Ghana. Which is a claim to fame in the BSS. He's very quick for this level, and if he can stay fit (ho-hum) then I can see him being my more advanced striker despite his apparantly poor finishing. He'll get so many chances, he's bound to finish one of them...

jonesawuah.png

Michael McEnery (AM L, ST) is the last of the first team squad. He's versatile and genuinely left footed. A decent all round striker (if you ignore his off the ball skills, or lack of them) but he'll have to be happy with a subs role given that I have three better options ahead of him right now, and a passing rating of 2 means I'm not keen on him playing in midfield.

The August review.

As you've probably guessed by now Bognor Regis stink worse than a month old kipper hidden in the airing cupboard. So really I've got to play defensive. If I open up the game unnecessarily with these players, I will get tonked. And I mean well and truly tonked. My tactics this month have mostly been defensive. Erm, actually they've been totally defensive other than when I've gone behind in matches. So far, I've been favourites to lose. I'm actually pleasantly pleased if the match odds aren't making the opposition odds-on to win. Means I can hope to nick the game :D I hate Bognor. Liverpool come save me!

First match was at home to Basingstoke. It'll get a bit repetitive if I tell you before every game that I'm not favourites to win. So from now on, we'll assume that unless I say otherwise. In any case, Basingstoke got a bit of a surprise...

bognorregisvbasingstoke.png

bognorregisvbasingstoke.png

We bossed the match and got our deserved reward for it. Very pleased with that result. Promotion here we come!

Three days later, Welling came to visit. I had to rotate 3 first team players for the match as they were obviously not fit enough to play in it. That probably contributed to the mad game which followed...

bognorregisvwelling9.png

bognorregisvwelling.png

That was a horrid game. Two of the Welling goals came from 30 yard wonder strikes from the wing. Wonder strike is probably giving them more credit than they deserve, they were more sliced crosses which sailed over Tardif's head. Charlie Sheringham was a monster in the second half and we couldn't cope with him. I could have changed to shut up shop but I guess I was too overconfident at 2-0 up too. Lesson learnt yet again about that although in my defence, I'm not certain my team can shut-up shop for 45 minutes...

A trip to Havant & Waterlooville was next on the cards. Away days are about draws I think with this team. Always pleasant to get what you want :)

havantwvbognorregis4.png

havantwvbognorregis.png

We rode our luck a bit (well, a lot) but that kind of made up for the loss the previous match.

We then paid a visit to St.Albans. Had a mate who lived just outside there. Terrible place on a Saturday night. Was glad to get out of there with Bognor too.

stalbansvbognorregis.png

stalbansvbognorregis2.png

The footballing gods hated us that day. Dominated the match, while they were obviously trying to pepper Tardif with crazy long shots. Not much I could do about it without killing the team and leaving open spaces by pressing even harder. Still, a defeat was a bit harsh.

After two away games, it was time to host somebody back home again. AFC Wimbledon. Are they really as good as they're made out to be in the game?! They're definitely one division down from where they should be with those players, if not two. But their manager always seems to horlicks their league season up. And so it proved again down in Bognor...

bognorregisvafcwimbledo.png

bognorregisvafcwimbledo.png

Very, very pleased with that result. Played excellent counter-attacking football and didn't give them very much of anything during the match.

So were the board pleased about August's 7 points in 5 games, the 10th place in the league, the 9 goals scored?

bognorregistown3.png

So the 18 year old centreback Patrick *** isn't playing too well? And the 3 assists in 4 games from Sam Gargan mean he needs a break from first team football? And that means I should be doing better?!

Riiiiiiiiiight. Just what do the Bognor fans want? If they bothered to turn up for games, I might, just might be able to afford Messi and Ronaldo and Torres. Eejits.

Conference League Cup South first round next. Bromley at home. I think some cup runs might be necessary just to keep the club afloat financially. Although, it'll hurt the league form if I stay in past January. Decisions, decisions, decisions...

The September review.

A month of injuries, suspensions and poor performances. Not all bad news though...

First Round of the Conference League Cup South had Bromley coming to visit. And The Rocks were favourites to win! Not by much, but I got a chance to play the Standard variant. Hurrah!

bognorregisvbromley2.png

bognorregisvbromley.png

We finally got the goal we deserved in extra time, but really we should have won in normal time. A good performance and a good start to the month. 2k prize money pays the wages for a week too!

Back to the league for the next match and Thurrock away. This match pretty much messed up the month.

thurrockvbognorregis2.png

thurrockvbognorregis.png

A poor first half performance (albeit a tad unlucky to concede twice - Tardif has been shocking at times) with three injuries needing substituting at half time. Switched to attacking for the second half and got a result. And then Funnell got sent off (I appealed because the players were incensed about it) for a seemingly innocuous tackle. Kept pressing and then a major injury. 9 men on the pitch and then got done on the counter. I've not had less than 7 players in the physio room since. And with a small squad, that really hurts. Still enough of my bleating...

Bath came to visit next.

bognorregisvbath2.png

bognorregisvbath.png

A makeshift team did fairly well but the strikers are obviously out of form right now and we couldn't create any decent chances.

Over to Wales to play Newport County, and another makeshift team did fairly well all things considering.

newportcovbognorregis2.png

newportcovbognorregis.png

A little unlucky to lose, and a decent performance. The lack of quality in the backup is obviously showing though. Three losses in a row in the league is a bit worrying though as it's now starting to hit morale.

FA Cup second qualifying round came as a welcome distraction to the league. Away to a small team from West Sussex called Burgess Hill and slight favourites too. Played standard and was very pleased with the performance, even if the scoreline was a little tighter than I'd have liked - my own fault for not risking going a little more attacking.

burgesshillvbognorregis.png

burgesshillvbognorregis.png

4.5k for making it through to the next round is very welcome for the club's finances. And some of the players I've had on the transfer list are obviously trying to prove me wrong. Decent performance.

Last match of the month and last day of the month. Bromley come to visit again as September's bookends, this time in the league.

bognorregisvbromley4.png

bognorregisvbromley3.png

Ref gave me a dubious penalty, and then seemed to spend the rest of the match trying to give Bromley penalties to make up. They missed both of theirs though and I nicked the victory. Nice way to end the month :)

The board and fans are a bit miffed about the Thurrock result but the cup wins seem to have helped them see the bright side of life.
