The Dragons Are An Elite Breed, Son.

It was a few months since Gary Speed had died, and Wales, after an initial period of mourning for the departed manager, was now feverishly looking for a new manager. Several names were put forward. Among the favourites were Chris Coleman, and Mark Hughes. Appointments were to be made in late January but for unknown reasons, the FAW postponed the appointment to February, just a few weeks (or days) before Wales played their first friendly of the year 2012 against Denmark.

But on February the 23rd, just six days before their friendly against Denmark at The Liberty Stadium in Swansea, the world and more precisely the Welsh fans, were in for some shocking news.

GUUS HIDDINK APPOINTED AS WALES MANAGER

Former Turkey coach, Guus Hiddink was appointed as the new manager of the Wales national team in what many would believe to be a coup. Hiddink is a man with a proven track record in managing national teams which are not very big favourites and leading them to new heights, having previously managed South Korea (reached the World Cup semi-finals), and Russia (reached the Euro 2008 semi-finals).

As he took on a new challenge, he spoke to the media saying "It's an honour to be managing Wales. They've got some great players and I'm pleased to be working with them."

The news was absolutely delightful to many fans of Wales. Some though were sceptical following his semi-disastrous outing with Australia and Turkey.

HIDDINK ANNOUNCES WALES SQUAD FOR DENMARK

Appointed just six days before the friendly versus Denmark, Guus Hiddink's first task was to name a twenty three man squad for the friendly match. He chose to go for a safe line-up with not much of debutants in the list.

Goalkeepers:
Owain Fon Williams, Wayne Henessey, Boaz Myhill

Defenders: Darcy Blake, Danny Collins, James Collins, Neal Eardley, Chris Gunter, Christian Ribeiro, Sam Ricketts, Neil Taylor, Ashley Williams

Midfielders: Joe Allen, Gareth Bale, Andrew Crofts, David Edwards, Andy King, Joe Ledley, Aaron Ramsey, Hal Robson-Kanu

Forwards:
Ched Evans, Steve Morison, Rob Earnshaw.

Guus Hiddink also named the new Wales captain, replacing Aaron Ramsey, who'd been appointed by Gary Speed. Celtic midfielder Joe Ledley was appointed captain replacing the nineteen year old while Swansea's Ashley Williams was replaced by West Ham United midfielder Jack Collison as vice captain.
