Started this challenge myself now with Q.P.R. finished 5th first season and currently 4th in my second season. This is my current line-up. I tried to keep as many english/british players as i could.

Dwnloaded the file on page 5, got the game working.

Followed all the stuff in the OP and had a team full of greyed out regens, but they tend to go when the squad is a decent size. The only problem was I was only given a wage budget between £15000 and £17500 depending on my season expectations. The maximum wage I could offer a player was £750

Finally got it working and signed a decent team.

Unfortunately I've had to stop as apart from myself and Blackburn no other side signed a full squad. Liverpool signed three keepers and a forward, Swansea signed two midfielders and Man Utd signed Ronaldo, Rooney, Neymar and Messi and no-one else. As a result there were some ridiculous scores (two 9-0's in the first two weeks and Newcastle having a goal difference of +32 after five games)
