The Great White North

View attachment 115117

I'm starting again my Canada national team story as I really enjoyed my game last year. I'm starting this story on January 2017, just a couple of months after Canada were eliminated from the World Cup Qualifiers. I will be involved with the Canadian senior side and the U-23 side. Since I wouldn't control the U-20 side, I will update their progression throughout the story.

The format how my story will be presented: One post will be the Competition draw, Player Selection for Competition, another the Competition group stage than knockout stage, Friendlies (including the player selection), Every 6 months World Ranking (January and July), and Awards.

I will also update other big competition such as Copa America, Euros, African Cup of Nations, etc, and maybe even the club competition if something big happens.

Brief Overview

The Canada men's national soccer team represents Canada in international soccer competitions at the senior men's level. They are overseen by the Canadian Soccer Association and compete in the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF).

View attachment 115071

Their most significant achievements are winning the 1985 CONCACAF Championship to qualify for the 1986 FIFA World Cup and winning the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup to qualify for the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup. Canada also won a gold medal in the 1904 Summer Olympics. The 1986 World Cup was their only successful qualification campaign in their history.

Football was being played in Canada with the Dominion Football Association (1877)and Western Football Association(1880) acting as precursors to the modern-day Canadian Soccer Association. In 1885, the WFA sent a representative team to New Jersey to take on a side put forth by the American Football Association, the then-unofficial governing body of the sport in the United States. In an unofficial friendly, Canada defeated their hosts 1–0 in East Newark, New Jersey. The American team won 3–2 in are turn match one year later. In 1888, a team represented the Western Football Association in a tour of the British Isles, earning a record of nine wins, five draws, and nine losses. The squad comprised 16 Canadian-born players with the only exception being tour organizer David Forsyth, who had immigrated to Canada one year after his birth.

In 1904 Galt Football Club represented the WFA at the Olympic Games in St Louis, Missouri. As just one of three teams competing, Galt defeated two American clubs, Christian Brothers College (7–0) and St.Rose (4–0) to win the tournament.

The Canadian national team toured Australia in 1924, playing a series of "test"friendlies against their hosts, including their first official match,a 3–2 friendly defeat to the Australian national football team in Brisbane, Queensland on June 7, 1924.

1981 through 1985 saw Canada develop under the guidance of English manager Tony Waiters. So close in 1981, Waiters would see the Maple Leafs through to their first World Cup finals appearance in 1985. A 1–1 away draw to Guatemala was key in allowing them to eliminate Los Chapines in the first round group. The second round was also closely contested, in part as this Canadian squad was strong defensively but had limited ability to score goals. The Canucks managed to eke out a 1–0 away win over Honduras, thanks to a George Pakos winner, hold Costa Rica scoreless in San José, and then in their final game, one they needed to draw to qualify, beat Los Catrachos a second time, 2–1 in St. John's, Newfoundland, with Pakos and Igor Vrablic the goal scorers.

The victory not only secured their first World Cup finals berth, but also the crown of CONCACAF champions for the first time, although Mexico did not compete, having already qualified automatically for the World Cup as hosts.

View attachment 115068

At the 1986 FIFA World Cup, Canada impressed defensively in their first game, allowing few chances and conceding a late Jean-Pierre Papin goal to lose to France 0–1.They lost their next two matches to both Hungary and the USSR 0–2, however, to finish at the bottom of their group.

The Canadian Soccer Association turned to a German to lead the senior national team in 1999 with the signing of Holger Osieck. Success came rather quickly with Canada winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup in February 2000. After emerging from the first round on a coin-toss tiebreaker with invited side Republic of Korea, the Canucks scored a quarter-final extra-time upset win over Mexico on Richard Hastings' golden goal. The win set the stage for an unprecedented run to the final, where Canada defeated Colombia 2–0 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. Canada swept the awards ceremony, with goalkeeper Craig Forrest winning MVP honours, Carlo Corazzin securing the Golden Boot and Hastings named Rookie of the Tournament.

View attachment 115066

Winning the Gold Cup earned Canada a place in the 2001 Confederations Cup, where the highlight was holding Brazil to a 0–0 draw. The Gold Cup victory also won them an invitation to compete in the Copa América 2001.When security concerns prompted the cancellation of the tournament,Canada disbanded their training camp and Canadian players returned to their club teams. The tournament was then reinstated and held on schedule. The Canadian Soccer Association announced they would not be able to participate in the reinstated tournament.

Stephen Hart's first competitive action as the full-time head coach was a poor showing at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, not managing to get out of the group stage. However, during the early stages qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, Canada put up a string of good results. They topped their group in the second round but were eliminated in the third round of CONCACAF qualifying, finishing one point behind Honduras and Panama after losing 8–1 in Honduras on the final match day.

Benito Floro was hired in 2013 changed the Canadian Culture but was sacked in 2016 after a disappointing Gold Cup campaign in 2015, not qualifying to Copa America Centenario and Olympics and not qualfying to the "Hex" in the World Cup qualifying.

Canada plays in many cities around the nation including BMO Field (Toronto), Olympic Stadium (Montreal), BC Place (Vancouver), etc.

Jason de Vos

View attachment 115064

After another disappointing World Cup qualification campaign, the Canadian Soccer Association sacked Benito Floro as they want to create a through Canadian culture. Like in Hockey where Canada developed a unique brand, the CSA wants to make their make their identity unique. That where Jason de Vos comes in. As the Director of Development of Canada, de Vos will help make the Canadian brand. Looking at his three MLS clubs (Toronto FC, Montreal Impact, and the Vancouver Whitecaps) and FC Edmonton and Ottawa Fury, he hope that they will help develop players.

Jason de Vos will manage the Canadian senior team and the U-23 side. He will be a close eye on the U-20 side and their development.

Making the World Cup is a difficult goal to achieve as Canada only made the event once in its history in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Canada only achievements in the International stage was a gold medal win in the 1904 Summer Olympics when 16 Canadian-born players known as Galt Football Club won the tournament. Also Canada won 2 Gold Cup Tournaments in 1985 when it was called CONCACAF Championship and in 2000 and won the now defunct North America Nation Cup in 1990.

View attachment 115063

Jason de Vos, a central defender, started his career with London Lasers in the now defunct Canadian Soccer League. After his stint with the club joined Kitchener Kickers before returning to London.

He joined the Montreal Impact in 1993 when they played in the American Professional Soccer League, playing there for 5 season, including the final two at Darlington FC, a third division English team at the time. He joined Dundee United of Scotland and spent the next 3 season with "The Terrors" including captaining in 2000/01 season.

De Vos joined Wigan Athletic in 2001 and captained the side to a First Division promotion in 2002/03 season and was named PFA Division Two Player of the Year. In 2004, he left club on a Bosman transfer and signed with Ipswich Town until his retirement in 2008 where he was captain in 2006.

View attachment 115062

In the national level, Jason de Vos appeared in 49 games, scoring 4 times. He captain the national from 1999 until his retirement, playing the 2000 Gold Cup and 2002 Gold Cup finishing 1st and 3rd respectively including scoring the game winner against Colombia in the 2000 Gold Cup finals.

Canada will join Costa Rica, Honduras, Haiti, Jamaica, and Guatemala. Costa Rica will be our toughest opponent in this group with Honduras and Jamaica may give us some trouble. Hopefully we can at least finish in the playoff position.

We started the campaign with a big win over one of the favourites Jamaica. Liam Fraser and Ten Fei were the scorer.

View attachment 114920

Another win, this time against an easier opponent as Guatemala only had one shot on target. We had 65% of the ball possession and had 29 shots (9 on target). Malik Johnson and Andrew Gomes were the scorer.

View attachment 114919

We ended up losing a disappointing game against Costa Rica as they managed to scored the stoppage time. Our job wasn't any easier as David Akinola was booked with the straight red card.

View attachment 114918

We came back with a big win against Haiti with a 4-0 win. Shamit Shome, Jérémy Robert, Malik Johnson, and Ten Fei helped Canada win.

View attachment 114917

We ended with a win in our final game of the Group Stage. A convincing 2-0 win over Honduras. Daniel Daley scored both goals for us.

After the group stage play, here are the final standing in Group B:

View attachment 114916

We finished in 1st place with 4 win and a loss. By finishing on top of the table, Canada secured one of the 4 spots for the U-20 World Cup that will be played in a couple of months. Also finishing in 1st place, we will play against the winner of group A to determine the tournament winner.

Also in Group B Costa Rica and Honduras will be a single game playoff with the other group to determine the final 2 spot for the U-20 World Cup.

Group A

Not surprising that Mexico finished in 1st place. Amazing that they finished the group stage without conceding a goal. They will face Canada in the finals. United States and Trinidad & Tobago will face Costa Rica and Honduras in the playoffs.

Next post will be the Finals.

CONCACAF U-20 Championship Finals

We made it to the finals for the first time in this competition. Our opponent is a three-time winner and will be playing in their fourth straight final. So we are heavily the underdogs.

The lineup for the match today.

View attachment 114913

Playing in a 4-5-1 defensive formation will give Mexico a hard time scoring. Hopefully our defensive tactic will us to a penalty shootout.

The result:

View attachment 114912

We suffered a heavy loss against Mexico. Even with the defensive tactic, Mexico bombard our net with 24 shots. We only managed 4 shots but none on target. Even though we lost, qualifying to the U-20 World Cup was a big achievement for us.

In the Playoff games:

Both Costa Rica and United States will join Canada and Mexico as the representatives of CONCACAF for the U-20 World Cup.

Group Draw

The 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup will be the 21st edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, the biennial international men's youth football championship contested by the under-20 national teams of the member associations of FIFA, since its inception in 1977 as the FIFA World Youth Championship. The tournament will be hosted by South Korea between 20 May and 11 June 2017.

Serbia, the 2015 champions, will not be able to defend their title as they failed to reach the final round of the UEFA qualifying tournament. In doing so, they became the fifth consecutive incumbent title holder to fail to qualify for the subsequent tournament.

The top two teams of each group and the four best third-placed teams advance to the round of 16.

The draw:

We were handed a tough group with Netherlands, Cameroon, and Iraq. Netherlands and Cameroon will be tough to play against and Iraq may give us a bit of trouble.

Squad Announcement and Group Stage

Now we are in the big stage with our young kids. The World Cup is one of the toughest competition in the world and for us Canadians, we are the underdogs. Andres Arango and de Vos were analyzing our opponents for the group stage and they have announced the 20 players that will represent Canada:

Goalkeepers: Terry Watson (Vancouver Whitecaps Residency), Simone Grandi (Toronto FC Academy), James Pantemis (FC Montréal);

Defenders: Kadin Chung (Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2), David Akinola (Toronto FC II (Toronto FC)), Robert Boskovic (Toronto FC II), Andrew Gomes (Montréal Impact Development Academy), Thomas Meilleur-Giguere (FC Montréal), Marcus Godinho (Heart of Midlothian F.C.);

Midfielders: Malik Johnson (Toronto FC II), Shamit Shome (FC Edmonton), Aidan Daniels (Toronto FC II), Niki Millar (Toronto FC Academy), Chaim Roserie (Jacksonville Armada FC), Samir Maric (Vancouver Whitecaps Residency), Jérémy Robert (Montréal Impact Development Academy);

Strikers: Daniel Daley (Toronto FC II (Toronto FC)), Tan Fei (Vancouver Whitecaps Residency), Adam Marello (Vancouver Whitecaps Residency), Shaan Hundal (Toronto FC II);

We brought in a few new members into the squad that was not featured in the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship. Simone Grandi will now backup Terry Watson, Marcus Godinho and Robert Boskovic will now help us defensively, Niki Millar, Chaim Roserie, and Samir Maric will help us in the midfield.

Now for the Group Stage result:

View attachment 114782

We miss a huge opportunity to get the 3 points. We managed to limit Iraq to 6 shots but only one was enough to split the points. We wasted 20 chances.

View attachment 114781

This is a great result against one of the World Cup favourites. The Dutch were pressuring us throughout the entire game but our team were excellent in the back four. We need a win in our next game to go into the Round of 16.

View attachment 114779

And a disappointing end to our World Cup campaign. We conceded at stoppage time and just under a minute later, our keeper suffered an own goal. Holland also won their match against Iraq and took our spot in the Round of 16.

The final standing after the group stage:

View attachment 114774
View attachment 114772

So our World Cup campaign ends. Canada didn't qualify to the Round of 16, even by the best 3rd place finish as we had 1 point less than USA, Uzbekistan and Iran.

Next post will be the end of the tournament.
