Chapter 4
October 2005
Sydney

I’d been with Sydney for 5 months, but so far only been on the bench for a handful of first team games, but I had been making a name for myself in the reserves, scoring 10 goals in 11 starts. I had also settled into Sydney really easily and hit it off with the rest of the squad and the staff, but Sophie hadn’t. She had enrolled at UTS (university of Technology, Sydney), but she had become increasingly homesick. Finding it hard to concentrate, to keep up with the work load. This was starting to reflect in our relationship, Sophie was getting ever distant, not talking to me, not confiding in me like she used to. My job wasn’t helping, training solidly, the reserve games and being forced to attend, even if I wasn’t included in the squad, first team games. Leaving there little time between, her studies and my work for us to actually spend any real time together.

So for 5 months I had worked my hardest to get into the first team squad, eventually paid off. October 8th 2005, I was on the bench for the game against Melbourne. 60 minutes gone and the score 0-0, Pierre Littbarski looked over to me and told me to warm up. Melbourne went and scored making it 1-0.

I came on straight away, right in the heart of midfield. A few touches, a few passes before I got myself into the game. Melbourne were on the break, Geoffrey Claeys had the ball after one of our corners, and was running straight at me, I slid in took the ball from him. Sprung to my feet and with one fluid movement I played the perfect ball through to Dwight Yorke, who hit it first time making it 1-1.

Then the greatest feeling I’d ever had in a football shirt. The ball came in from the right from our corner. But was headed clear straight to me outside the box. The whole world seemed to go into slow motion except for me. The Melbourne defence rushing at me, Yorke calling for the ball over the top. Claeys was closest to me, and slid in, I knocked the ball over the top of his leg as it slid past me, the abll sitting perfectly on the grass in front of me as i landed from riding the tackle. I didn’t stop to look, didn’t see if anybody was around me, I just swung my right boot at the ball, making perfect connection with the ball. The ball took off like a swinging rocket straight into the top corner, straight passed the diving Melbourne keeper! I’d just scored my professional goal, and made a statement to the sceptical press, fans, family, friends and teachers who had all doubted I could do this, I was here, I was play professional football, and I wasn’t going anywhere.

Excellent mate. Really enjoying this and I look forward to seeing your next update. (H)
