Well Christmas is certainly looking a heck of a lot better after another successful, if sterile watch, day out with Arne’s Champion Reds.

The fragility of confidence.

I wrote the above after Sunderland. And that still rings true as to where we currently are. Two really good performances against two really good sides in Inter and Bournemouth. Followed by a dog of a game bereft of any real quality from either side yesterday. Filled with boneheaded, asinine mistakes. Through which, thankfully, Tottenham made slightly more asinine mistakes throughout than what L’pool did. But, unlike the late September through November losing slide of 9 out of 12, they are starting to be made of sterner stuff again and finding ways to get results. Which is the single most important factor when confidence has been so low and form so bad. Performances are a
LONG way secondary right now to results.
And as fragile as our confidence still naturally is at times to setbacks, as witnessed the last 20 minutes in particular by some abysmal game management right through the team. From Alisson unbelievably kicking the ball back to Tottenham and not out of play with players on the ground injured, then right on forward throughout the team, the big difference now is they are finding ways to get results and turn this. 6 overall unbeaten now (4 wins/ 2 draws), leaving them within touching distance of the top 3 in the league. And level with the team in 4th. Whilst having the top 8 in Europe in their own hands.
A heck of a lot better position to be going into Christmas from than the way it was looking 6 games ago.
All incremental steps forward each game which is the only way you can climb out of the hole you put yourselves in.
Of the few positive player performances, Wirtz was again superb. So made up for him we finally took one of the brilliant chances he’s been regularly creating with a brilliant goal. There can’t be a better performing player in the league than him currently in his overall game which is getting better and better as each game goes by. Hopefully now that sets him off on the G/A his stellar performances have deserved. Isak showing, as brilliant as Ekitike is and was again, that he’s our genuine World class striker that’s as good as anyone, anywhere. Form is temporary. Class is permanent and all that. And the movement and finish just highlighted that in glorious technicolor. Beyond mad how anyone can say we never needed him.
SO unlucky for him to be clattered in scoring. And on that, the sub getting injured, to then be subbed, to then have that player injured and subbed? Three subs effectively for one prayer? When your lucks out, it’s
PROPER out!

And sorry to say for the continued white noise on-line, but the Slot song count was 4 times yesterday. Twice in either half as we continue to do what we always have. Back our manager. And not least the man who brought us #20.
Not a game that will live long in the memory. But another big 3 points as this unbeaten run grows with another step forward to getting back to where we should be.

I suppose asking Utd for a favour later in reeling Villa back in would be too much of a Christmas wish?
