I doubt it's just money. It's about club stature and future plans

Think manager plays a part as well, Rodgers is a good manager but doesn't have anywhere near the reputation of that compared to someone like Mourinho or LVG.

ggwp.

but really, it's hard for Liverpool to compete for players like Depay or Costa. Money will always be a big factor, but clubs they're against are way more lucrative.

Money does talk, but sadly in this instance its the club stature as well, not just money...

I completely agree stature comes into it... But money nowadays is the big thing and Liverpool for whatever reason do not offer that

After Gerrard and Johnson leave this summer, only Sturridge and Henderson (just because of his new deal) will be on over 100k a week. And people wonder why we cannot compete. There is a direct correlation between finances and league finishes

Yep. You could have gone for much better players if you could have (or if you wanted to) offer them better individual deals like wages and agent fees. It's modern football, it's largely about money. Heck if Fergie wasn't so stubborn with Hazards agent, he would be playing at Old Trafford now.

This is why when it comes to transfers I've also believed Rodgers is hamstrung... the FSG policy is place doesn't allow us to target these kind of players at the moment

IIRC, I recently read that only 2 or 3 times in the PL has a team finished in the top 4 that wasn't among the top 4 in terms of wages. So yes, there's most definitely a correlation.

Depay off to United, not really surprising at all. Only the most optimistic (naive?) fans would've expected him to sign for Liverpool. We can't (barring a major miracle) offer CL football next year, we can't (or won't) offer big wages: Only Sturridge and Henderson will be on £100k p/w or more after this season, with Gerrard and Johnson leaving. We've only won 1 trophy the last 9 years, and that was the least reputable trophy of them all. In addition, Rodgers' name doesn't carry anywhere near the same weight as Mourinho, Pellegrino, Wenger or van Gaal does in international football.

Unfortunately it seems we'll have to get used to signing "talents" and "prospects", and simply hoping that we hit the jackpot and miraculously win a trophy once a decade. It's a shame really, how far behind we've fallen. And as for the future looking bright? I'm not so convinced. I don't see us digging ourselves out of this pit any time soon.

The problem with us is that we show no sign of intent, and rarely do. Since we signed Torres, Mascherano, I can't remember any world class signings we made since really? I mean world class before we signed them.

Suarez obviously was, but wasn't regarded that as the player he is today at the time.

More has to be done for transfers. We have lost our pulling power but we need to identify more big names, so say Sanchez failes for instance, you're looking at another big name. Not all players are in the market, but they don't always have to be to try to get them.

I keep saying it, but surely Higuain is a possibility if a big bid is put in, at least try!

Is just me to think all this story about depay is agents-press overreacting. The player was almost 100% singed for utd since the beginning of last year.

Yes, it is not the reasoning for all the past failures

Miki was beastly for shaktar before he switched...don't know what you're talking about...

Liverpool would have offered him more money but he chose dortmund because of klopp's reputation

Dont think you have understood what i said...

Simply offering more money was the main reason we failed to sign most of those players. Mkhitaryan is the exception to that rule because he either chose club stature/recent success/Klopp or we took too long negotiating trying to get the best value

That would have been beastly!

That would have been beastly!

So would have Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard, Coutinho, Sterling, Suarez, Sturridge and Torres as options

Brings a tear to my eye thinking how we lose any player as soon as he becomes remotely world class haha

You can build awesome line up with all the missed transfers for every club.

In the past we missed Shearer, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Batistuta.

Recently, Hazard, Lucas, Thiago, Strootman.

Obviously, but the key difference is the bigger clubs retain most of their better players and those signings will be to better the club, not to replace the outgoings like many have been for Liverpool recently

Yeah lot depends on how the club is doing and also how it holds in the future. When you are winning you don't lose your players if you can pay decent wages, on the other hand there are teams like Dortmund and Atletico Madrid losing players even when they were winning because they couldn't offer decent wages and the obvious long term domination would be by Bayern and Madrid/Barca.
