They have but there's plenty of clubs that have had a season or two in the sun before fading away again. The ones that actually turn their success into a continuous pattern of trophies are the exception to the rule, the majority get stuck in a cycle of: produce good players-> do well-> sell good players -> develop new players -> do well ->sell good players-> develop new players etc etc. All it takes, without the financial backing that clubs like United already have, is a bad season or two and it all comes crashing down.

Personally I would like to see stricter rules put in place to curb spending, but I wouldn't differentiate to such an extent. Surely the sheer amount of money being spent is as much of an issue as its origins.

Yes there are many clubs who follow that cycle but I was just pointing out the clubs that have improved and challenged the best without any external help which City and Chelsea fans (not all) used as an excuse that without sugar daddy clubs can't challenge big clubs when Atletico have challenged two of the biggest clubs in the world and Dortmund did the same in Germany.

And Subtle conceded that their were exceptions but even those 2 clubs cannot maintain their success for long because they are currently stuck in the same cycle that he has mentioned

Which all goes back to the point that it is nearly impossible to get and sustain success over a long period of time by growing organically. An external financial boost is often needed for a club to be successful quickly and more importantly, sustain that success over a long period of time

Interesting little test for some of the youngsters tonight as we play Shamrock Rovers... Already Ibe impressing and Aspas has equalled his goal tally for the season!

On Ibe, Really like him and genuinely think we could have a player who can make a similar impact to Sterling. Very similar players with pace to burn

Moreno legit rumours out of the Echo, he's our #1 LB target.

Lucas and Agger likely to be moved on - Barrett.

Agger, Lucas out. Moreno, Lallana in. We'll need another CM, and depends on what happens with our other full backs, another one in.

Why would we sell Agger and Lucas? I keep reading that there's this huge fire sale at Liverpool, upto 12 players will [apparently] be leaving this Summer. We don't need to sell to buy, so why is there so much emphasis on who we're selling rather than buying? Probably because the media actually have no clue who we're trying to buy and it's much easier to guess who we will be selling.

I would much rather keep Lucas and Agger as able squad players at least... For some reason the majority of fans really have turned on Lucas since his return from injury

We buy a new CB and with Skrtel, Agger, Sakho providing competition it is a very solid looking central two

It's the standard - Lucas gets injured - Lucas comes back - Everybody hates Lucas - Lucas plays well - Everybody loves Lucas - Lucas gets injured - cycle we see pretty much every year. His main problem is the fact that Henderson (& Allen to a certain extent) has been fantastic this year, putting a lot more pressure on Lucas to do more than just be a defensive midfielder, which, lets be honest, is pretty much the extent of what he can do. He's certainly a good squad player and to sell him would be stupid, doubt we'd get much more than the ?5m we paid for him and we certainly can't replace him for less than ?10-15m.

Agger should stay, Sakho is good but seems inconsistent, not quite ready to be a permanent first-team player. As for Skrtel.. Well, I don't even know how to describe Skrtel, I love him but I hate him. If somebody like Barca come in for Agger then I can see him leaving but I hope he stays, he's vice-captain and (this isn't saying much, but) is our must consistent CB. I can see Ilori going back out on loan, hopefully to somebody in England who will actually use him. I would like to see us bring Kelly back into the squad, he's 24 now and it's pretty much make or break for him.

I think we need to focus on buying those 3 or 4 big signings, then look to who we will be having as back-up. Far too much emphasis on the little players at the moment, but that's probably just the media.

Agree with pretty much all of that, but cant see Kelly being any kind of improvement. Unfortunately the injury has made him a completely different player

It's a shame, would like to see him come in as a CB though, just giving him Toure's game time would be better than nothing. Seeing him leave would be awful, another players career ruined by injuries. Although, I'm still upset about Shelvey leaving, think I have some home-grown attachment issues :P

It does always feel better when your club can produce talents

I feel Skrtel could be brilliant if paired with someone more level-headed and organised who could keep him in check. Sort of like Rio was to Terry and Vidic.

At times Skrtel has been brilliant, other times very poor.... If like you said Skrtel was paired with somebody he was really comfortable with i think we would have a fantastic CB
