Great piece on the man, the myth, the living LEG-END Joe freaking Gomez in yesterdays paper:
Gomez: my rapid Liverpool FC rise, learning from Brendan Rodgers, and the long term aim to play centre back - Liverpool Echo
Watched the first hour of the U-21 game until Southgate went nuts with 9 changes, and he did ok considering the step up. A little nervous, but grew into the RB role. As he notes, it's giving him great perspective playing FB of other defensive roles within a scheme. (Ibe also looked a lot better with confidence and running at and beating people. Would imagine both will start the qualifier Monday.).
Can't speak highly enough about #12. Not seen anyone look this composed stepping up like this since Robbie Jones. He keeps on progressing at this rate, and both ourselves and England will have an absolute stud back there for years to come.
Be REAL interesting to see who Van Gaal puts on his side as with Clyne on the other, we finally have two solid as FB's again who can actually defend. And defend well.

Having just watched an absolutely abysmal Belgium performance against Cyprus (just like the WC, they are a collection of egotistical individuals and not a team. They're the new Holland. They aren't winning diddly-squat under Wilmots), where they struggled to a late 1-0 win; both out strikers played a half and both barely touched the ball.

I was not a huge advocate for us signing Ings, I honestly didn't think he was anything special. His attitude since signing has been fantastic though, and my respect for him has gone up immeasurably. Would love to see him given a chance against Man U, one of the few players that could guarantee 100% commitment
Oh dont mention robbie jones to me dad otherwise he'll go on and on about how amazing he was but yeah gomez looks like a hidden gem.

Completely agree on Ings starting at Saturday. Said as much a few pages back and I'd still do the same were I the manager:
There's goals to be had with their 'keeper and defensive problems. But I don't think in a million years he'll start two forwards and Benteke will be the focal point with just one.
And if EVERY player isn't giving 100% for THAT game, then they want immediately dropping.
Rodgers shouldn't have to motivate them at all there. That should come from within.

Ha ha. Said it before I REALLY like yer auld fella.

Has there EVER been a better debut than going from Fourth Division Crewe on the Friday to having Giggs completely in his back pocket in a man of the match performance, on live TV in from of the Nation, at a packed OT on the Sunday? All at the age of 19? WOW! and then some. Nobody was even looking at him at Crewe either. Souness tells it that he was watching Crewe looking at someone else and this fresh faced kid just blew him away dominating against hard nosed pros.
Wonderful player who was just ridiculed with injuries that ultimately cut him short at just 28. First it was the shin splints that ruled him out of the European Championships with England where he was the RB just 8 months removed from playing in the fourth tier. Then his back went which rolled onto his knee that ultimately did for him. Not only was he a fabulous defender, but he was a fantastic support player in attack down the right. And he was equally adept on the left when he was switched over that side after we signed McAteer and Evo put him at right wing back in that system and witched Jones over.
I'd have him in my all time XI. He was THAT good for me. Probably at LB with Phil Neal at RB. If it hadn't been for all the injuries, he'd of surely gone on to win a slew of England caps. This isn't a knock on Neville, who I rate as the best PL RB there's been along with Jones and who was as solid as you could wish a defender to be; but in all probability he wouldn't of won half as many caps as he did if Robbie had been able to stay healthy.

#12 (RB again) and Ibe starting the qualifier.
This will now be the second England U-21 game I've watched in 5 days. Me. Watching England.

*Edit* Finished 1-0 England again. Both had decent second games at this level. Joe was solid defensively. Caught out of position once or twice but for the youngest player on the pitch not called Odegaard (first time I've seen him BTW. Technically brilliant and very strong for a 16 year old. Certainly held his own) he had a solid game. Ibe did what he does best. Running at people and committing them. Went on a great length of the field run beating 4 or 5 that ended with him cutting in and just putting his shot inches wide with the 'keeper wrong footed.
REAL impressed by the Southampton LB Matt Targett both games BTW. He's another gem out of their academy.
Onto Emre Can getting his second successive start for Germany against Scotland now. Again at RB.
Mixed night again for Can. Great going forward. Not so great defensively. Needless foul that lead to Scotland's first equaliser. Good shot saved that Muller got the rebound from to put Germany back in front at 2-1. He get's away with it in the German system with the DM's dropping in and the CB covering. But he's not a RB in any way, shape or form.
That said, he's found a way into the World Champions starting XI so all credit to the young man for that and long may it continue for his development into what we all hope he will be for a long time to come.

Thing is, they could easily be a good team with the right coach. It really is just Wilmots holding them back now.

Although why he's specifically chosen to signal out Benteke and Hazard when everyone else was just as bad is ridiculous. De Bruyne couldn't of been more selfish and greedy for one.

Still doesn't sound good. And you should never take an ego trip when deciding on your kid's name. It shows a lack of respect for your kid and his/her integrity. I actually just read an article on nrk.no about people naming their kids all sorts of **** these days. And this is a perfect example: Parents who use their own identity and interests and force it on the kid, not even considering the chance that this kid might one day be a United fan, or even grow up to be an actual adult in the future.
Well it's an interesting issue. Parents usually have some right to autonomy over how their child develops. It's so much more than just the football team you support. Often your behaviour, habits, interests and even religion inevitably tend to mirror that of your parents simply by growing up in that environment around them.

So Bordeaux next Thursday is £13.
Compare that to this Saturday at United (£45. Which is cheap for what we normally have to pay. City for example is £58, with Arsenal and Chelsea both topping £60.). Or even £20 for a Kop ticket for Carlisle.
We SERIOUSLY don't realise what power we could have as fans over this if we all stuck together.
Instead, we follow like sheep and get fleeced to the nines.

Any predictions for Saturday's match?
I'm assuming we'll start with the same back 4, which to some degree makes sense. Gomez is a better defender than Moreno, and it's Old Trafford. Personally I don't rate Lovren at all, but throwing Sakho into the team away against United might not be the best timing. But I probably would anyway, if I had the choice. Skrtel and Clyne are obvious choices.
Henderson and Lallana will miss the game, according to the latest reports. Henderson will be a huge miss for us, Lallana not so much judging from how he's started the season. I'm assuming Lucas will be in the starting eleven, along with Milner and probably Can.
Coutinho will definitely not be in the squad, another huge blow. Firmino and Benteke will occupy 2 of the 3 last spots, which means our starting eleven will be identical to the team that got humiliated by the Hammers, with the exception of Coutinho. That last spot in attack will likely be given to Ibe, though there's a chance Rodgers could surprise me and pair up Ings with Benteke, with Firmino behind them - although that could make us vulnerable out wide.
So how are we supposed to turn a 0-3 home loss into an away win at Old Trafford with almost the same team, only weakened by the absence of Coutinho? Hopefully Rodgers has an answer to that question, because I honestly have absolutely no idea. The only thing speaking in our favour is that United has been about as non-threatening in front of goal as we have. We could very well see the first draw on Old Trafford in 15 seasons.
In any case, I just can't see us winning this game, however negative that sounds. The only positive thing about our start was 3 clean sheets in a row and the impression of a solid defence - an impression which was quickly erased by Lovren, and the rest of the defence, refreshing our memories from last season in the previous game. And that leaves us (well, me at least) with the impression of a vulnerable defence and an ineffectual attack which lacks creativity. At this point I'd definitely welcome a draw.
