Another interesting point by Barrett: "Recently, Liverpool enlisted Ask Ten, an international leadership consultancy, whose website presents a case study of how a global football brand can “obtain commercial success off the pitch when the team is not performing on the pitch”. As an indication of where Liverpool are, it is compelling."

To a wider point, we've been that under married on a World widescale for decades now it's criminal.

The club was just happy to be a friendly, family orientated club when it should of been looking bigger. It always made it all the more asinine when Peter Robinson openly said if Utd ever got it right on and off the pitch we'd be in trouble, yet happily sat on his laurels with L'pool.

Both clubs we're/ are/ should be equally as big a Worls wide brand/ attraction; but Utd had the marketing foresight we're now playing catch-up to. And we're still a LONG way behind in that regard.

And I doubt Liverpool will get anywhere near unless they start improving significantly on the field. It's extremely difficult to sell history, tradition and pomp to a person in China who feels no direct connection and try to make him a fan as compared to someone living in Liverpool

A large part of United's commercial success was also being in the right place at the right time. Just as EPL was being brought to television screens worldwide, United were embarking on their golden era of success under Fergie. Marry that with executive foresight as well as being a historical club with past success and now United is pretty much unparalleled in terms of brand value

On a side note, it's always amusing when City or Chelsea fans are called glory hunters. Considering United have won the most trophies in the past decade, you can fairly guess that most of their fans worldwide are the ones who support the club based on winning trophies

You'd be surprised Alcarez. We're still in the second and third generation wave of that tradition being handed down by parents. And the Far East as you mentioned is a fanatical gold mine we're slowly beginning to exploit.

The consumers are there. (Horrible word but we'll use it for the sake of merchandising.).

The club just needs to alter its whole approach to better utilise them. Obviously the longer it goes on the pitch the more difficulties you run into. But we're only 8 years removed from two European Cup finals in 3 years. The first the arguably the greatest game there's ever been. That's helped a bunch with 'new' fans who've stuck.

Edwards floating them just before the greed is good league helped out a massive bunch too financial to add to the 'being in the right place at the right time' line.

Obvious sign of losing argument when anyone use that term or when club has nothing to brag. United have more fans because of 90s success, Chelsea because of Roman era, Liverpool because of 80s. Apart from locals no one follow the club that's not winning.

IMO fans who switch teams when not winning are just pathetic when they brag about their new club also 'fans' who support 2 clubs. We had 1 here who used to support City and Madrid.

Oh no I completely agree. Most people support clubs that are winning. It's just strange that people seen to apply the term 'glory hunter' to Chelsea or City fans most. It's almost that if you don't support a club without a illustrious history that is winning, you are a glory hunter while those who support winning clubs with great history are not which is just strange considering most of them never had the opportunity to actually experience the history

It is recently switched to Chelsea and City, before it was Manutd.

You have to see Indian Liverpool, Barca fans, accusing ManUtd fans as glory hunters. They don't even know what the irony is.

Lets be honest here, clever management had **** all to do with it. United's marketing breakthrough happened mostly through perky power of Posh Spice ****.

Nature of being a massive World wide club. Fans from all over the place.

Always narks me the continued argument with many that 'L'pool should be locals only and all the wools/ day trippers etc should f-off and watch their local sides.' Aside from the fact a lot of out of towners are some of our loyalist supporters and travel week in, week out all over the place following my team (and just how can you criticise someone with that dedication?); the club needs the day trippers, as frustrating as they are, who are going to spend a s*** load of money in the shop locals never would. You made L'pool Scousers only and the club would be a whole heap worse meas. People just appreciate its BIG business now.

As for people that can switch clubs ...., they aren't 'fans.' They're customers. And honestly not worth your time of day. There's no logic to it to the layman, but supporting a sporting organisation in whatever sport is often the most important thing in someone's life outside their faith and family. Usually passed down from generation to generation. If you can just switch clubs to whomever is the current successful one, you were never a fan to begin with and will never get what it means to be one.

Not to nag but I can't remember the last time we score from a corner-free kick.

Since Sami and the big Greek left we've had no threat in the air at all.

And no, we aren't playing bad. But it's not too good either. Villa sat that deep they may as well be at Goodison and we're creating very little with all the possession.

Pretty dire first half. In complete control whilst doing little with it outside the early goal. Villa need to come out if they want anything. And with Gestede missing a sitter and Mingolet flapping surprised Sherwood isn't thinking they can get something.

Anyone have a decent stream link? It's not being aired here, so I'm currently stuck with a 4 pixel stream.
