A dull first half was back to Fulham. No pace. No movement. Pedestrian with little attacking intent. The set-up of the team all wrong to get the best out of the forward players. Solid defensively and somewhat in control with Bournemouth producing nothing outside of an outstanding Alisson save from Envanilson on 17. But little inspiration to unlock an equally comfortable defensively Bournemouth. A game lacking in attacking quality and creativity from both sides with tweaks needing to be made from both coaches at HT …..
Step forward Cody Gakpo to take matters into his own hands after a similarly slow first 10 of the second half. With brilliant work to beat two men and set up Isak for the winner to spark the game to life. You always felt Bournemouth would run out of gas in the second half after their exertions in San Sebastián Thursday. And so it proved as the game opened up. With Isak suddenly full of confidence again and the Reds stepping up their work rate and pressing. Augmented by a nice tweak from Andoni on 70 to both box the back end with the calmness of the continually impressive Nyoni, again, adding control. With first Szoboszlai adding more of a press the other end as he stepped forward. And then Koumas to take that on with another all-action cameo. Shout-out again to Jacquet who doubled down on his French National call-up with another very commanding display.
Back-to-back away league wins. 3 clean-sheets in a row in the league. All positive building blocks as Iraola continues to right this ship.
With the first block of fixtures this season in the books, we find ourselves unbeaten in 7 games under Andoni. 3 points behind the Champions in the league. 6 off the top and City. Who we play at a wild Anfield next time out. Massive opening win in the European Cup against Atleti ticked off. And through in the League Cup ….. Not too shabby at all for a team in transition under a new manager, completely changing its style. With a perceived poor squad lacking depth …..

HAPPILY take that knowing things can only get better and better as there are still levels to go. If you can keep picking up points the league, whilst progressing the cups, when you are transitioning and not playing anywhere near your best, that’s as good a sign you are on the right path as any.

There’s been far less grumbling and shoutouts than last season too. Which wouldn’t have been the case if Arne had drawn the first two at home. That’s the problem with Anfield. Too many people from all over. Many on one-off off occasions. Like you noted, the audible groaning at certain players is ridiculous at times.
