The Manchester United Thread

Also, De Jong and Carrick are fairly similar players. except De Jong is a lot better defensively.

They are really not simlar. De Jong is a destroyer, Carrick is a significantly better passer, and dictates the tempo.

Not really? De Jong is a fantastic passer and superb at ball retention. Carrick is a bit more creative, but that's about it.

This year's stats:

89% accuracy and 0.3 key passes for De Jong vs. 89% accuracy and 0.4 for Carrick.

Looks fairly similar to me. And then defensively De Jong is class above Carrick. Not a bad option to have on the bench - plus he's free.

Yeah... except it doesnt account for game control. Carrick's ability to spot the right pass trumps De Jong's, as does Blind's. Carrick is a lot more of a forward passer than De Jong, who is usually side to side.

There is zero reason to pick up a 30 year old De Jong

The Glazer's former spokesman is due to release a book about his six years working for them - looks like it could be interesting to take a look at.

In it, he claims:

• Malcolm Glazer had little to do with the takeover, leaving it to his sons

• The family were always in it for the long haul and wanted United to overtake Chelsea

• Son Joel Glazer refused to believe United fans could 'hate' them

• The 'Red Knights' who supposedly launched a buyout were never serious suitors

• Trusted manager Sir Alex Ferguson regularly invited the family into his dressing room

• The Glazers are 'not ogres'

Unless De Jong is on a free, and would not block the transfer of another midfield option, I'm not interested. LVG already sees Carrick as his other general already.

He has no contract. How bout that for a reason?

And while I concede Carrick is overall a better passer, I wouldn't label 0.1 more key passes per game as "trumping". Especially since De Jong plays significantly more long balls.

I think he'd be a great addition, as with many players who have "thug" reputation, the technical side of his game is very underrated.

And If Blind is a cover for Carrick, who's a cover for Shaw?

De Jong is vastly under rated as a squad player and a needed type of player in the Premier league, we spent 60mil near on 2 Brazilians on trying to replace him, and Chelsea struggled to replace Makaele until they eventualy got Matic back this year.

Not a starter for Man U, in Lvg's but for a 0-4 mil option, a great steal.

Key passes track chances created, they dont track the ball before that. Carrick is superior on that front, by some way.

Blind is the all round option. United are tracking left backs in the event they bin Evans and Rojo (who is also a full back) becomes a designated CB

Agree, but have no interesting in paying any kind of major figure for him. That said you did ditch him in his prime.

I certainly wouldnt want it to block a long term addition there.

Rojo,Blackett,James.

At the end of the day, you need 2-3 competitive backup CMs to have any hope of challenging both in CL and the PL. Relying just on Blind who is also a first choice LB cover, is not good enough.

De Jong is free, very solid and he also worked with LVG before. Its a no brainer signing to me.

I agree, but if the question is who replaces Carrick, the answer is not De Jong. if he is making only one addition in midfield, then definitely needs to be more than De Jong. We'll see. De Jong for me is a no go, if he blocks any midfield options.

I'd take De Jong on a free, no questions asked, he's type of midfielder we lack and can't really go wrong as he's worked with LVG before. Would be great as an alternative/rotation type option especially with the amount of games we are going to have next year if we are in CL.

But I also agree that we should have bigger priorities than him this summer, but still great no risk option we should take.

My issue would have been paying any major amounts. Turns out hes free, so thats great

My second concern is that he shouldnt be the only midfield addition.

I dont want to be the Arsenal of the north. We are looking decent for top four, but I fully expect a title challenge, and should we make europe, a CL push next season.

I wouldn't mind Jong as long as he's a bench warmer and nothing else.

I don't think De Jong would be there for the first team (if he'd sign him), since LVG already prefered Blind as DM over De Jong during the WC. However, De Jong has certain abilities which are very useful for a team and needed during the season.

When rival fans resort to the 'Chris Smalling' supposed joke is laughable. Since the Manchester City game he's been fantastic - best CB in the league I'd go as far to say since that game. Even before that he was pretty good anyway, made the odd mistake but still reliable. Thank the lord we didn't swap him for Vermealen.

I'l never take anyone seriously when they say Smalling is a joke, it's easy to see they never watched him play and just goes by his time as a full back where his ball playing skill was poor.

David De Gea has been nominated for POTY :) Well deserved imo and wont be a lot in it between him and Hazard imo.
