The Manchester United Thread

SAF immature? What are you talking about?! We're going to have to play 4-5-1 in order to match them and we're going to need energy in the centre of midfield. Carrick always seems more comfortable in a midfield 3 and Park will probably get the nod to be the player to support Rooney up top. I'd be tempted to play Cleverley over Scholes too, just for the youth and extra energy. I'd guess Young or even Welbeck will play wide left ahead of Nani because of the extra defensive capabilities and work rate - Nani failed to close Hibbert down twice on sunday and it cost us. Hopefully one of Jones or Smalling will replace Rafael at right back, we need a better defensive fullback for this game and the extra height will be important against their giants. Sounds very negative but I think it will be a cagey affair and it will at least give us firepower to bring on off the bench if necessary, a draw will suffice!

Tbf to him he said it would be.

No, Nani was not at fault, Evans was at fault for failing to attack the ball for 3rd goal and Rafael for first goal. Nani over did his duty to play as LB whereas Evra was positioned where a midfielder usually would be standing. It was Evra's fault and CBs.

Jones is in atrocious form, Rafael apart from this game has been excellent. It would be harsh to drop him just because of one game. I dont know why many say he is not defensively good, he is very good tbh. Just that he get caught out some times, not anymore than our very experienced and Captain Evra.

Park in the midfield would be very very bad idea, he has been in poor form all this year. If anything it should be Cleverley, but saying that we beat them playing 4-4-2. Rooney can drop deep and Welbeck did very well leading the line against City in the FA cup. I can see lining up exactly like Everton game.

And without Scholes we can kiss goodbye to the game. We can't keep possession without him and without him it is as good as lost. Cleverley is not even match fit, he rarely played after coming back from injury and didn't even play for reserves for match fitness.

Playing for draw, I can see them battering us. We should go with positive game plan like how we played against them in CS and at OT. Scoreline was flattering but we were the better team in CS and in the first half at OT.

I wold go with 4-4-2 like we played all season, just with Rooney dropping even deeper to help our midfielders. Nani should play this game. He was our main attacking threat against Everton and tbh we should expect defensive responsibilities from defenders and just a help out from midfielders/wingers. Not the other way around. Nani is a must for this game imo. And tbf to Nani he has improved defensively and his work rate was always good right from day1 at ManUtd. He was never bashed for his lack of effort, it was always his decision making which has improved significantly.

If we go with 4-5-1 then we should go with Carrick, Scholes, Cleverley in the midfield and hopefully Park wont get anymore starts this season.

I didn't place the blame squarely on Nani's shoulders, I just said that he failed to block 2 key crosses. Obviously the defending in the box was equally as poor. Of course it is the wingers responsibility to track the opposition fullback, you can't expect the full back to mark 2 players. I can't bare to look at the goals again, but surely Evra was dragged infield by the opposition wide man - that's just good attacking play to expose Nani's weaknesses.

I think Rafael will be dropped because we need the height of Jones/Smalling from set pieces, SAF often used to used O'Shea for games against bigger teams like Stoke, and I think he'll do it against City.

Park's form hasn't been great but he will always give you work rate and may also be used to stifle a key oppostion player's effectivness on the game. It's certainly one for debate, but SAF often uses him for big games, although as you said, Rooney could drop that little bit deeper for us to make a 3 in the middle - Welbeck has looked decent recently and always puts in a good shift, so it would be difficult to drop him.

And...I never said play for a draw, just don't take unnecessary risks when we don't need to win. There is a difference.

Drop Nani for Young, lol. He scored after coming on against Villa, he scored against Everton aswell as getting a couple of assists, our best winger has his mojo back and people are talking about dropping him because Evra didn't do his job :S Sorry, but I'm not having our wingers or midfielders taking the blame for what happened against Everton...it was all down to our defenders.

Nani couldn't stop cross but I would put more blame on Evans and Rafael for the goals. Evans was just pathetic for 2nd goal, he just watched Fellaini executing perfect volley. Yeah Nani might have done better but he did as much as he can for a winger and that too brilliant attacking winger.

Evra was awful and he was all over the place. He was not even arsed to get back to position but I will leave at it. This season and last he has done it many times and not worth pointing it again as it's obvious he is awful defensively.

Well yeah for height he might be, but it should be smalling as Jones is very low on confidence. I dont like to be harsh on Jones (Whom I love a lot) he has done very well for such a young player playing so many games for big club but he is very low on confidence and wont be a good idea to play in such a big game.

And re Park, he has offered nothing in big games this season. I dont know whether it is to do with form or legs gone he looked so out of comfort zone wherever he played. He was out of his depth and couldn't keep up with the pace of the game. He was awful when played in 2 man midfield but that is understandable, but I can't remember any good game he has this season tbh and in such a big game its not worth a risk.

Evra's dragged inside by McFadden, and Nani doesn't get close enough to the man he should be marking - Tony Hibbert. How can you possibly blame Evra for that? Evra has been poor defensively this season, but neither goal were his fault, you can't be expected to defend against 2 players as a fullback! Granted, the other defenders didn't do enough to defend the situation, but it's not Evra's fault that Tony Hibbert got 2 key crosses into the box to create 2 goals.

Just seen Pricey's tweet about United offering 15 million euros for Shinji Kagawa from Dortmund (just assuming its even true) what are peoples thoughts?

Pass. Another player in Rooney role ? No thanks. Just like those BS about Gaitan. It would only make sense if SAF plays Rooney in the CM position.

Apparently he has rejected any extension to his contract which expires next year so will leave at the end of the season. Quite interesting because he has a preference to play in the Barclays Premier League and Manchester United have been linked with him for a long time. Not sure which other club it could be if this source is true.
