Exactly. I may be a bit harsh but he's really frustrated me this season. As I said he may as well have had a Nani shirt on. But despite being played out wide, and limitations being put on him, its still not stopped Miki, Mata and even Lingard performing under the same instruction. Even Rashford when he's been put out wide offers so much more. When Martial is in an attacking area and allowed to get forward, its the same coming inside off the left with his head down and running into trouble. Every time. That's nothing to do with tactical limitation by Jose or the position he's in. That's just **** play and not learning. He should know after the 5th time of doing it in a game and getting nowhere that he needs to do something different, but he doesn't. Could point to the coaches also who should be seeing this game after game and telling him to stop it, but for whatever reason he's not. Maybe he has been told but keeps doing it and that's why Jose doesn't seem to trust him. Who knows. But he needs to get his head down sharpish and do something.
 
If Martial must play as a wide man I'd personally put him on the right. Whenever I seen him play for Monaco he was on the right and he terrorised defenders. Like he did last year from the left. Keep him on that right side. He will still get opportunity to cut in to the box purely from his pace beating the defender but he'd be so mush more effective on the right either putting balls in or driving into the box and pulling it back for someone. Basically Valencia with a better end product. We are crying out for that on the right and have been since Valencia was moved back.

LOL. You know I almost used the Fernandinho example among others to whomever it was the City thread saying you can't get all the attackers on the pitch together.

Pep wants to get all his best XI players regardless of position onto the pitch together and expects them to figure it out!
 
Martial can be a bit of a one-trick pony at times on the left, I agree, but the extra defensive responsibility and iffy man-management has definitely played a part imo.

Every player is a different individual, everyone reacts differently; they're human! Some need the kick up the **** (like Shaw, and it did get a positive reaction on the pitch, unfortunately short-lived), and some need an arm around the shoulder - I don't think Mourinho operates in the latter. I just look at Martial this season and all I see was a player severely lacking in confidence; taking away his #9 shirt, being asked to do things he hasn't been before (track back a lot, etc), and then things just not quite falling into place at the other end. All of that, on top of the off-field issues, he just seemed unhappy to me.

He isn't entirely blameless in his lacklustre season, but I do think the kid needs a bit of a break.

Totally football next gen.. You CAN play anyway, but you lot have to guess where.
 
It's just a different system. The lack of defensive stability meant the wingers needed to be more defensive than either would have liked, it worked for Miki, but not so much for Martial. Get a better CB, and a DM and the flanks can play faster and harder. Jose's best style actually suits Martial, high tempo and direct. He's fine out wide, we just need to change the play a bit.

Do you think there are DM's out there that are willing to do all the muck Herrera consistently does? Do you see him as an area of upgrade?
 
Martial may be a limited player, but then so is Robben. With a proper setup they both can destabilize nearly every defense out there.

Interesting. Aside from his diving, I don't think there's been many moe talented wingers the past decade personally. I guess he favours his left more but he's been great either side.

Extremely talented, one of the best we've seen in the modern game, but you do know what he's gonna do 8 times out of 10 - beat you and or cut inside on his left. Stopping it however, is another ball game altogether.

Valencia is another example of this, one-trick pony, always that heavy touch/rapid change of pace outside, you know he's gonna do it, but still beats his man at a ridiculously high success rate.
 
Martial has had an iffy season, but that's just as much down to him than it is the way he has been used. He has actually shown a lot of application in my eyes, I remember the game vs City at the Etihad towards end of season, he done a great shift defensively and had virtually no attacking prowess to use that game thanks to the setup.

He's 21, hugely talented, we'd be utterly stupidly bonkers to push him out. Another Pogba springs to mind if we do.

What he means is robben just does one thing and one thing only: Cut in on his left foot and try and shot/a cross.

Fact he often does not get the support and is left on the island alone does not help. He's often double, if not triple teamed. He doesn't help himself by over dribbling, but purely 1 on 1 scenario, I wouldn't have any other player from PL. And he does not miss sitters like Uniteds other players. He'll do just fine with a bit more freedom and support from other players.
 
Perisic ripping Udinese a new one atm. On fire beating players doing the dirty work and has a goal and assist :)

Also devastating on the break.
