The Manchester United Thread

I still wonder how we played Giggs in CM against Liverpool and Fergie does still not see the need for an extra CM like a Keane-esque type player. No doubt go out again in the CL because of it as well.

Today watched Keane's performance against Liverpool in the 96 FA cup finals. He was just superb winning every 50-50 tackles and playing some superb passes. Keane would have completed this team.

Sort of this formation

With Rooney playing free role and Anderson supporting left flank when needed.

Negates Rooneys best play at the moment and leaves RVP occupied by 4 players, 4-2-3-1 has a better match up against a 4-3-3, we are better off 4-2-3-1. If we had a hargeaves then yes, because you could then move Carrick forward for Anderson, and have the escape ball over the top, while knowing you had a player who could take the AMC one on one every time.

That negates Rooney's best game, which is his excellent link up and ability to create and score from AMC, also leaves RVP surrounded by 4 players. Our best attacking play , and our best way of hurting Chelsea is through our close link up, look at the number of goals we have scored. It doesnt make much sense to change that up.
use this11 to draw up what you mean, but from what i think it is, not sure its a good call at all

Like I said Yesterday, if Rooney plays advanced position, which means 2 CMs then we might be outnumbered. If he drops deep then we can retain possession but I have my doubts which I posted yesterday (dropping deeper and failing to have impact in final third).

Also I said free role which means he will be all over the pitch with Cleverley/Anderson covering his flank.

2 Cms are not outnumbered, since they effective double up on the AMC, they are a double pivot. Rooney tracks the runner like oscar will. Playing advanced does not stop him from defending, which does not stop him from attacking, one of the few AMCs who can actually do both. Oscar is on his way to doing the same, see what he did to pirlo.

Free role cuts both ways, but it still negates his ability to dictate from the centre of the pitch, and more important, makes it hard for him to draw the DMs from RVP

Think we have to agree to disagree here. It's not even 4-3-3. Positions on the paper won't reflect the positions on the pitch. I said free role which he played as AM drifting all over the place (for ex he was RW when Welbeck scored the goal against Stoke, Striker when he scored and he was in AM position when RVP scored).

Playing Rooney strictly as LW is foolishness of highest order as like you said he is at his best as AM. That's how he will play even with the formation I posted, playing free role.

Anyways lets agree to disagree. I don't think anyone will change their opinion and doesn't matter how much we discuss, it will be Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Valencia in the midfield.

Forget about formations and tactics, re bold part it would have been great to have Hargo or Keane in the midfield just to watch Carrick's expansive game. He is really good going forward but shame he can rarely use it at United.

Think Anderson will become first choice player this season if he stays injury free. He has the talent and with him not involved at all today, I think he will play against Chelsea.

The reason the free role works so well in the 4-2-3-1 against stoke is the even when they interchanged, there was someone in the AMC link, it still committed 4 forwards.

He wont be first choice, Cleverley beats him all hands down with his passing, and he has got much better at that tackling bustling role, and getting better at positioning too. Carrick is just Carrick.

4-3-3 relies on the DMC being a supreme player, 4-2-3-1 is more about making up as a unit.

I would go 4-3-3 if we had that player, but sadly we dont.

With the way RVP and Cleverley is playing I will be surprised if no one occupies that AM role when Rooney switches position.

RVP is dropping very deep, which sometimes I like as he creates chances and sometimes just a waste as we don't have anyone in the box.

Re the formation, it's bit tiresome Mike, and it's 3:30AM here, have to agree to disagree for today at least. Will send a PM on thursday.

Anderson on top form plays well and makes our midfield looks good. I for one haven't given up on him, if he gets back to his top form, we won't be having midfield problems.

Yeah Cleverley has taken his chances really well (well it was obvious as he was real talent and rare English CM who plays pass and move game) now he is adding goals to his locker but I wouldn't rule out Anderson. Maybe Anderson and Cleverley will end up as midfield pairing if they improve their positional play.

Thats why you have an AMC like Rooney, finishes the chances RVP creates. This is something ARsenal did an could not do with their 4-3-3 last season. I wouldnt play it without a Rooney or a Kagawa

Oh like that certain guy who we inexplicably missed out on at Bayern Leverkusen and now he plays for Juve???

Can't quite remember his name.... *cough*Vidal.

Or maybe Anderson will go and we will replace him with someone who has a better attitude! Ilkay Gundogan maybe? ;)

Ferguson signing a CM? Get real mate. He will sign one more AM and try to play him as CM ;)

I've just got back from the game, I knew we would go a goal down, it's happened the past few games but I'm glad we could turn it around and win.
We need to stop conceding these early goals as well.
I think we could do with signing another CB who is an established player but I'm hoping in the near future that jones and smalling will become great players.
Thanks :-)

Wanna bet it's going to be:
Lindegaard
Rafael - Rio - Evans - Evra
Fletcher
Scholes - Carrick
Valencia - Rooney
RVP

I don't believe Scholes could be dynamic and energetic enough to play that role. Also, Rooney obviously won't start on the wing as it has been already discussed here because he's much better in other positions. We saw him yesterday when he played on the wing which forced the change and Chicharito got subbed. And Fergie already said Lindegaard has something wrong with one of his fingers confirming he won't play the weekend.

Agreed. But tell that to SAF :)
