The Manchester United Thread

we were not great bud, not as good as we have been some seasons, we barely got into 4th gear! Only after Vidic returned did we start to improve, mostly defensively but also all round!

Our all round game was better this season but defensively we were poor in the first half. We were great. How many times have we got 84 points with 4 games to go? We won 25 games out of first 30 games, thats incredible. If that's not great I don't know what is.

We missed a gold in Kovacic. He went for just 10 Million. Will go on to become one of the best Inter transfers of last 20 years. Amazing player and kid is 18 and already looks level above their midfield.
Kovacic is pure playmaker. We never had one under SAF, so I'm not to fussed about that. He is great player for sure.

I know you had the main injuries last season i never said you didn't. The way you still took City all the way just showed that you were a better side last season but got the bad luck with injuries. All i said is that this season City have had the injuries and you haven't which was always going to mean you will come out on top. I am not knocking the title win at all no title win is easy.

I think most of the replies are to this point "I think its also fair to say Utd have had less valuable injuries than City this season which has helped Utd" which is not true at all. People just look at loss of Kompany for few games and Aguero and think they had some crisis on the other hand ignore Vidic returned almost in the second half of the season with Smalling, Jones getting injured so regularly. Rooney and Kagawa missed around 2 or 3 months each which was very significant but somehow we coped with it.

Not to forget Nani barely made 10 appearances this season and Young was as good as forgotten man.

I know you are not saying United didn't have injury problems but I don't agree with the point that City had more significant injuries than us. It's just that we coped better.

He is playing as a proper CM and deeper role for Inter and he is pure class. His game play is so so like Iniesta. His dribbling and passing is so good for a 18 year old kid. From what I read he was a advanced midfielder or AM before, but at Inter he was played as CM and he is going really great for them.

So it's a missed chance for sure.

For Kovacic, see Powell. What we need is someone in between, almost ready to play AND carry the mantle. Really between the 23-28 range.

Let's not get carried away. He's decent, not pure class. Had few good games for Inter, but I don't think he's the type of player we need as we all ready have Cleverley and Anderson who are pretty much the same like Mateo in Inter ( role wise).

I have watched most of the inter games this season and all the games since he was signed, I have to say he is better than Powell. He even got national team debut at 18. I for one would take him in heartbeat. Going to be a great player.

Not saying Powell is as good, but we need someone more "ready"

He is class man. For a 18 year old player he is really class. Carrying that **** Inter midfield on his own deserves some plaudits. Almost all the games he played he did really well. Yes he is not exactly the type of player we need now but he is the player who will dominate games in the midfield in few years. We could have signed him and also the other midfielder we need.

I agree. We need someone who can walk into the team to take us next level but Kovacic is too good a player to let go. We could have signed him as our next midfield star along with Powell. It's bit disappointing that midfield is our big problem and we didn't attempt to sign these kind of players.

Because then you start to block players like TC, and also how do you blood Kovacic and Powell at the same time. Cant buy all the talent, unless you are City.

This isn't FM bud :)

We have Carrick and Cleverley as our CM this season. Scholes will retire for sure and Fletcher is as good as retired. Anderson might be sold after one more injury ravaged season. So that leaves only 2 CMs and 1 good prospect. I'm sure there is lot space for a young CM if we want to.

Even if we sign established CM then we will have 3 CMs and 1 prospect, that's just 4 players for 2 positions.

Anyways this is not some serious discussion just that we could have signed a really good prospect. Nothing as serious as not signing established CM.

Thanks man for clarifying it. Never knew that wanting to sign a great prospect like we did with Powell is FMesque ;)
My point is you can't buy players just because they are good. If we got Kovacic, then there wouldn't be room for some other young players like Cleverley, or Nick Powell as you mentioned. Already have 2, arguably 3 players who can play Kovacic's role in Inter.

Anyway, we missed out on Romulo, and another player who many will connect with FM - Kara Mboj, or just Kara, who reminds me of Yaya Toure in so many ways. Now, if we miss on Badelj too, I would punch myself so hard. *******, every time I 'find' some player I really like, some other club snap him for peanuts :(

We lost our opening game, then won 25 of the next 29, spent a lot of this season breaking a number of our own records.

And United, of course. Begs the question why City didn't even seem interested in RVP.

Ferguson's quote:

"If the right player comes along you have to be prepared to make a move," Ferguson said. "I can find room for anybody here as long as they have the required quality. I am not sure Lewandowski will be sold to Bayern now. The Dortmund fans are not going to be happy and I don't think they will sell to their main rivals. I think they will either let his contract run out, or sell him somewhere else."

Looks like one more summer transfer window without signing a proper CM and playing Rooney as CM for next season.
