The Manchester United Thread

Welbeck was different class infront of goal yesterday, still got a lot to improve on though. Pretty much his fault for Swansea's goal trying to play his way out of trouble outside his own area but he'll learn from it

Something I really love and hate when players does that. It shows how confident they are in tight spaces, when they retain possession it will be so pleasing to see and when they lose, more often than it will end up creating very good chance for opponents.

Once Welbeck regularly starts adding goals to his game..... he's going to be an absolute beast of a player.

Was so impressed with Ferdinand and Vidic's display in defence yesterday, one of the very best defensive partnerships in Europe.

Yeah, from 2006-09 they were one of the best CB pair ever in our history. Hard to point out a weakness in the pair. Vidic was beast in the air and Rio had superb pace and positioning to compliment Vidic. The pair was just superb.

Would be just a better player IMO. Don't overrate him because he is English and comes from club's academy. A number of technical abilities needs to be improved in order for him to qualify for that term. Currently when he is in possession he looks so very clumsy. When a real beast of a player is in possession (such as van Persie, Rooney) you can feel that.

Clumsy in possession? He usually retains possession extremely well, apart from that goal we conceded yesterday which is very unlike him.

It's not just that anyway, it's what he adds to the team that goes un-noticed by so many fans who think a 'great' player has to just score goals in his position.

I am not talking about holding up the ball which requires mostly physical attributes anyway. I am talking about his ball control and his good ideas flair-wise but poor execution technically. His flicks and tricks usually lead to us losing the ball and sometimes even facepalms from all of my friends who are watching the current United's game.

Also I am talking about the fact that when he is in possession facing the goal he either makes short passes which don't lead to a goal threat or makes an unsuccessful dribble.

I do appreciate his work rate and I wouldn't care for his lack of goals (last season) if at least he was able to pick a through ball now and then. Since last season he wasn't able to do either of those things so that is why I rate him poorly. I think it is not acceptable for one of the world's top clubs to play a forward player (ST, AM(CLR), M(LR)) with so poor technical abilities.

Tbh everyone who didn't know, should have watch the Real Madrid CL knockouts last season, where Fergie gave Welbeck the nod ahead of Rooney, and from the job he did you could see exactly the sort of player he is and how good he's going to become once he becomes a little more refined.

Welbeck actually loses the ball very rarely.

He also is very good at doing things with his first touch, his movement is excellent, he retains possession extremely well.

His technical ability is very good, its his attacking positioning that needs work, and pushing higher up the pitch. It's not that he cant shoot, its that he doesn't shoot enough. He's taken 5 shots this season for England and United, hit the target 4 times, and scored 3 goals.

As for dribbling, only Nani Valencia and Evra dribble more successfully than him. We don't actually dribble much as a side.

1. Relatively good first touch when his chest is involved, not so good when he is trying to bring the ball under control just with a foot.

2. As for losing the ball - you need to read more carefully what I've said. Namely that his poor ball control leads to us losing possession. I haven't said he loses the ballbecause of that too often. The point being he doesn't need to try tricks and magic stuff he just can't do. Also, I am extremely surprised to hear a player capable of these (below) has "very good technical ability":

Yesterday there was another flick he tried while being next to the left touch line and failed as well but can't find a video for it.

3. As for his dribbling - yeah, van Persie and Kagawa are much worse... (sarcasm). Knocking the ball past the opponent is not dribbling (meaning Valencia too isn't a dribbler).

4. As for goals you're bringing up his goal tally for just a few games, I am talking about his whole last season.

5. You still haven't said anything about his passing and crossing, simply because it doesn't suit you... what about that?

Cristiano Ronaldo trying a Lionel Messi trick and fell down--- VERY FUNNY - YouTube Ronaldo is a **** dribbler then.

As is Messi. Lionel Messi FAIL - Copa America 2011 - YouTube

The original point was that when he adds more goals he'll be a beast of a player. What's the point of bringing this up in reply? And he was played out of position for the whole of last season. He's shown for England he's capable when he has chances.
5. You still haven't said anything about his passing and crossing, simply because it doesn't suit you... what about that?

Why are we judging a striker on his crossing? And he rarely gives the ball away passing it, so again, your point?

It's really sad how our fans like to go on about how good our youth system is, and then when we have a local lad with fantastic potential, he's constantly slated by said fans.

1) Wrong, most of the ball he gets is into feet, when he starts deep.

2) He can do tricks, but since when did doing tricks define techinical ability. Carrick does no tricks, one of the most technically gifted players in the league. You going to say he has no technical ability?

3) You might want to actually do some research on that, check the stats, those three players are the only regulars (Buttner is also there, but isnt a regular) to have dribbled more than him last season.

4) Er.... no one has said that he shouldnt score more, he must, but last season he wasnt getting into those positions at all, in two games this season he has, and got 3 goals, and needs to keep doing more.

5) I've mentioned his passing before. He is a highly accurate short sharp passer (89%), that is his role. But even so he created 22 chances last season, more than Kagawa and Cleverley. As for crossing, he isn't picked for his crossing, he never has been, thats like criticising Carrick for not scoring 15 a season, its not his job.

Exactly.

Also judging an withdrawn forward on crossing? Really?

Fine guys, continue to be deluded and be happy with Welbeck when there were really technically proficient players like Berba and still are real goalscorers like Chicharito in the club. The first left and the latter will be leaving the club I believe. Not relied on just because they're not English... I am the fan of the club and football, not the English nationality. Speaking of which - it's obvious in the World and European championships what England and it's massively overrated players (like Welbeck) are really capable of.

You do realise that all three players are completely different to each other and do entirely different jobs.

Hernandez not relied upon. Do you even know your club at all? Heard it all now.

You have a go at Mike for ignoring one of your points, and then you get the face on when people challenge you back?

It's part of the club's identity that we bring through homegrown players. And I don't know where you're from, but myself, as an Englishman, I like seeing our players coming through and doing well.

And Chicharito's an amazing goalscorer, but every other aspect of his game is weaker than Danny (though he was showing improvement last year), and I was a big fan of Berba too, but we basically replaced him with RVP, which is hard to complain about.

Hernandez does have a decent all round game, certainly for Mexico, but limited for United, but we saw more of that last season.

It would be interesting to see a Welbeck/Hernandez partnership, they would compliment each other very well.

Bit of a ridiculous thing to say really, you don't want local lads in your team?

He's picked the wrong club to support then. United prides itself on its local players. But it's not as if they play them for the sake of it either. They give you time, but if you're not gonna make it, you're not gonna be around forever.
