The Manchester United Thread

Think it's a personal thing. Like, I can't stand seeing offensive players with defensive numbers and vice versa - I.E Fabregas #4, Zidane #5, Gallas #10, Gyan #3 (for Ghana) etc..

Wasn't Zidane 10 for France?

SAF on Pogba: "If we hold him back, what is going to happen? He will leave in a couple of years. We have to give him opportunities."

SAF on transfers: “You can forget anyone you like, I am happy with the young players I have got."

Sir Alex: "I’m certainly not looking to add anybody. I’ve been saying that for weeks, but you’ve all been writing differently." #MUFC

So why do they matter so much if the numbers aren't specific?

They aren't specific. But 23 is way better than random 35. And also I want CBs to have 6 rather than midfielder number 23..

I wonder why that is!

You could argue that 23 is just as random as 35, to be fair. I thought he was wearing 18 the other day? But yeah - I personally don't care unless the numbers mean something (like 4)

Cleverley wore #35 throughout pre-season. Young's been wearing #18 (Scholes' old number..)

A lot of numbers mean something at OT though. 7, 10, 11, 20, 18, 2, 5, 1. There's quite a few..

Na. For me 23 is not random.. Is it really necessary to have discussion on the numbers? I'm just happy that Cleverley got 23 rather than junk 35.. :P

Oh we have too many special numbers.. On the other day Young was wearing 18 and he got that.. Would have preferred Cleverley to get 18 though..

Wonder why no one got 2 and 22.. Would have been good numbers for Twins..

Cant wait for game on sunday whats peoples thoughts on starting 11?

De Gea confirmed to start so...

De Gea
Rafael - Ferdinand - Vidic - Fabio
Nani - Anderson - Cleverley - Young
Rooney - Berbatov

#14 > #7 from what I have seen.. Henry was the best Arsenal player I have seen.. So..

Yeah, but #4 has two legends, #7 has two legends... Brady isn't far off Henry as the best ever Arsenal player. Pat Rice and Bergkamp up there too. Anyway, as you said this is rather pointless.

yeah was thinking same is hernandez back with squad now?

Nope. Out for another 2 weeks or so.

Valencia and Fletcher are playing in the reserves game on Monday vs Arsenal. Evra is doubtful as is Carrick. Paul Pogba has been promoted to the first team too, so he may get on the bench.

cheers mate mate would like to see pogba n morrison get some game time this season!

Hopefully Pogba will get few chances. He is built like a tank..

During Scholes testimonial, after half time Fergie was talking to Pogba and Vieira. Physique was so similar and he is just 18 or 19..

"De Gea will play on Sunday," explained Sir Alex. "I think the long-term view is De Gea, it's the reason we bought him and spent £18million, and we’re giving him a chance, I think he was unfortunate with the second goal, he had no chance with the first goal. Anyone who’s criticising any goalkeeper, when these free-kicks come in, and all the defenders are converging on top of him, the goalkeeper has no chance because the delivery is so good.

"It’s the same with Joe Hart interestingly enough and there was no criticism of him for the goal. Exactly the same type of goal that City conceded. He’s your national goalkeeper so the goalkeeper has absolutely no chance when the ball gets whipped in like that. Absolutely no chance because it only needs a fraction of a touch and the goalkeeper's dead. He comes for it and he looks silly, he’s got to hope that the defenders deal with it and that’s what we hoped and our defenders didn’t deal with it."

"On the second goal last week, he was stepping forward and then he took a step back and he got a bit unbalanced.

"It wasn’t a goalkeeper's mistake, more of a technical mistake in terms of his feet. We didn’t expect that and he wouldn't be doing that again, it’s just one of these things. The ball did move a bit, maybe about two feet. He’ll be fine."

The former Atletico Madrid keeper is wasting little time becoming integrated at United and adapting to his new surroundings.

"He’s learning a lot of things," added the manager. "He’s doing very well with his English, he’s taking it on board very well. His language teacher is delighted with him. Eric Steele, the goalkeeping coach, is pleased with him. He’s getting his communication across bit-by-bit."

Spot on as ever..

It's so weird thinking of MUFC without either Scholes or Neville in :( and I don't think Giggs is going to be a regular occurrence this season either , the new class is in now
