The Manchester United Thread

Rumours doing the rounds on twitter tonight that we've agreed to sign Nathaniel Clyne from Crystal Palace for £2mil in compensation when he's contract runs out during the summer as he's not 21 till April next year. Haven't found anything reported about it yet so suppose we shall wait and see if any truth behind this.

Would be a good signing if true, he can play on left and right side of defence, he likes to get forward! he is young with potential and English!
Would provide competition for Fabio / Evra on the left and Rafael on the right.

I hope we do sign Clyne. Cheap, talented, young player; that can cover both fullback positions? Much better than splashing out on Debuchy or whoever.

Absolutely brilliant from Fergie. His response to Vieira:
"If it’s desperation bringing the best midfielder in Britain back for the last 20 years [Paul Scholes] then I think we can accept that. I think he was programmed for that. Roberto [Mancini] had a wee dig a couple of weeks back. We’re all going to play our hand that way. There will be plenty of ammunition for that."

"I think the point Vieira makes about Ravel Morrison and losing our young players – we wanted to sell him let’s be clear about that for obvious reasons. But we want Pogba to stay because we think he’s going to be a fantastic Manchester United player and hopefully that’s the case."

"If you talk about desperation… City played a player the other night who refused to go on the pitch and the manager said he’d never play again and he takes a five-month holiday in Argentina…what is that? Could that come under the description of desperation? There will be plenty of ammunition don’t worry."

Didn't Scholsey refuse to play in a league cup tie though

Yeah I remember Scholes saying it in one of his interviews.

Btw if you are saying this in reference to Tevez then I'm sorry ajt, thats way off the point. SAF never said a word about "Scholes will never play" and all that. Infact if I'm not wrong it didn't even make much noise and he played in the league game after that.

Here is it.

Following a run of poor form in 2001 after being played behind the striker, Paul Scholes was dropped from the starting XI for our trip to Anfield. Scholes came off the bench with ten minutes to go but two goals from Michael Owen sealed a 3-1 defeat for United.

So angry was Scholes for being left out in favour of **** and Veron, he refused to play in our next game, which was against Arsenal in the League Cup. Dwight Yorke and Phil Neville were the only recognised first team players in the squad and without Scholes’ help, they lost 4-0, despite Arsenal going down to ten men with twenty minutes left.
At the time it was reported he was fined £100k for his behaviour, although he did start and played 90 minutes in our next game.
Ahead of his testimonial on Friday, Scholes has reflected on this incident with regret.
It is something I regret doing. I wasn’t in a great mood after being left out of the starting line-up for the Liverpool game – our previous match,” he said. “It was basically the reserves who were playing at Arsenal and I got a bee in my bonnet that I wasn’t happy with it and my attitude was, ‘I’m not going’. It was a silly thing to do – I know that. I had reasons for it but it was stupid and I ended up apologising. But I was lucky – Sir Alex would have been well within his rights to get rid of me after I refused to play for one of his teams and I couldn’t have complained about it. I don’t think many players have done what I did. “I got fined for it – a week or two weeks’ wages. I can’t remember exactly but I didn’t do it again! And I definitely regret doing it.”

I'm not having a dig personally at Scholesy-but there's going to be other people who will pick up on it. Obviously he admitted what he did was wrong-but Fergie will be picked up on what he said about Tevez.

Well only idiots will do isn't it, if they can't see the difference. ;)

Fergie might have kicked a boot at him on the pitch so all in all he dodged a boot!

Scholes wants to extend the stay for another season.I think it will be great to see the master of passing for another season but i hope we buy that creative midfilder in summer for the long term future of the club.

I love Scholes, he is a legend and a fantastic midfielder, no doubt about that.

But I really want him to step aside after this season, because if he stays it will just delay us getting another creative midfielder, whch I hope does not happen, as it has been left long enough. Scholes has been great this season but you can tell he is not the player he has been for so man years, some sloppy passes, giving the ball away in dangerous areas etc etc.

Absolute legend, but I would like him to retire and go into coaching, so we can replace him with someone else, if he did stay another season I doubt we would get a new creative mid.

I hate if Scholes retires for the sake of it. He has done superbly and I see no reason why he shouldn't stay beyond this season. If we sign a midfielder, well fine. Scholes will play lesser games, if we can't get our preferred targets then it would be foolish to make player of Scholes caliber retire just because he is in his late 30s.

We can try other way too, play Scholes and watch how Pogba, Cleverley, Anderson does before signing any player.

Anderson has played many times, he is not the creative type of midfielder we need, Pogba does not fall into that category, he seems more of a holding midfielder, but I have not seen much of him. Cleverley just has not impressed me at all what I have seen of him and I am not convinced he would fill a creative midfield role in the team.

Pogba is not holding player, far from it. Completely opposite. We never play with only creative sort of players. We prefer players who can do both attacking and defending.

Cleverley is creative enough to fill that role, just needs games. Anderson and Cleverely started so well and I have faith in them to repeat it again.

Scholes has always been a creative midfielder.. he can't defend to save his life.

Cleverley and anderson are very injury prone for my liking for a club of united's stature. They can be best a rotation option till their injury problems are solved.Scholes should be allowed to play till he wants and he wont moan if not played hence the perfect rotation option.Get Eriksen and let him settle in with scholes around to help him out.

Mistimes tackle doesn't mean he didn't do defensive works. He was never a pure AM. He was a CM who made superb late runs. He was creative, no doubt about that but he was never confined to one role.
