The Manchester United Thread

Just been reading few things on mufc official site fergie saying keane twins and tunnicliffe will get chance in first team next season:) vidic will not go abroad on tour to give him every chance of beeing fit for start of season, but is major worried about CD as evans and smalling will most probably need surgery and jones not getting rest due to the euros:( did not know smalling and evans were that badly injured! Also fergie alredy knows who he wants if he can get them.

Good to know he has his targets but should be expected to be honest. I hope he does the majority of his main business before the Euro's because we all know what happens if a player does well in a major competition.

Sir Alex Ferguson will not sign a holding midfielder - Official Manchester United Website

Ferguson says he won't sign a holding midfielder because he's never had one before and doesn't think he needs one.

Is it just me who thinks that the Sneijder and Ozil rumours were never anywhere near becoming reality? Or any link to a dedicated attacking midfielder (by dedicated, I mean they can only really play that position) is doomed?
Ferguson has never played with an attacking midfielder and always preferred playing with two strikers, apart from occasionally in Europe and in the big games, so I don't see why he's going to change the habit of a lifetime now. Especially since Rooney basically plays like a mix between an attacking midfielder and a striker.

Nein, both were deals in the works, judging from all the talk from both sides. Certainly Sneidjers was much more than rumour, only reason it didnt happen is because he wanted 180k.

And in fairness 2006-2008 (including our CL win) it was an assymmetric shape that had an attacking mid (Rooney or Tevez in the AMC hole, Ronaldo as the inside forward, all fluid though. Could well be going back to that shape.

Also if he didnt sign a holding mid, what kind of player did he feel Hargreaves was? Still need a player in that shape, preferably well rounded to boot (bit like Hargreaves was)

Hargo was much more than just a holding midfielder. He could play even box to box role but he played majority of his games as DM at Bayern. But at ManUtd he was CM. Even he played many games as RW where he was just awesome.

Fergie prefers players who can play multiple positions/roles rather than just a holding role.

Hargreaves was primarily a DM/MC who could be more versatile. I already pointed out his versatility. But at the core of his game was his ability to intercept/win the ball. Every position he played for us that was the core part of his game.

Another little bit i found interesting about this article is that fergie see carrick as scholes replacement for years to come:O
:(

Yeah but if he was pure DM like say De Jong we wouldn't have signed him for sure. He has much more ability than just tackling. His passing was good and he was not bad at crossing.

If we sign any DM surely it will be someone who has much more to his game. I never seen SAF interested in pure DMs like Mascha, De Jong.

I never said the contrary, i always expected the signing to have more to their game than defence. But the core part of their game will their ability to protect the side. A versatile passing holder.

Well you sort of did. When SAF said we never sign holding midfielder, you did post this isn't it. It was clear from Fergie's interview what he meant when he ruled out specific type of players.

I didnt say the contrary, read the second line where I outline the player we need and compare him to Hargreaves. Hargreaves is a passing versatile holder. You are the one talking about pure holding players. Its not clear, since he didnt make any definite distinction.

It was obvious what SAF was saying there.
"I don’t think we’ve had a holding player since I’ve been here. We’ve never had a holding player.

Re first part apologies, I misread that.

When Fergie spoke of the young players in the squad and reserves it was noticeable that he DIDNT mention Pogba. Definitely gone then. Shame.

Or he was talking about players who are in reserves only and not in first team squad (SAF has talked about Pogba in every interview he talked about young players)

He didn't talk about Petrucci also, if anything that is bad news for me.

Well he mentioned the da Silvas, De Gea, Keanes, Tunnicliffe. His absence is notable giving the strong links with Juventus imo

Yeah forgot he mentioned few first team players. Like you said it is not looking good.

I think for the current role Scholes now plays as more of a Deep-Lying Playmaker, Carrick is very much similar and could replace him in that role. But no way Carrick could replace him in the more advanced creative role he used to play.

Fergie is being naive in my opinion saying the midfield was not overrun imo that was one of the main problems against Man City/Wigan/Bilbao. I also hope Fergie does plan on improving this midfield and not just looking internally like he already stated Tunnicliffe and Keane etc will get first team starts next season. I thought we needed a holding midfielder as a priority in the summer and I would think Hargreaves would of came under something like that although he is not one dimensional. If he does not sign someone who can play like a holding midfielder surely we will just have the same problem again next season. Not sure if Fergie is a bit too stuck in his ways lately.

We'd want or need a holding midfielder for less than 10 games a season, there's no way we'll be signing a player that plays exclusively in that position when the money could go on someone more versatile or someone that will be used in more games
