The Manchester United Thread

Look Mike. you yourself admitted that RVP was not the signing you would have made. I am assuming you would have rather signed a midfielder. All I am saying is that the money spent on RVP could have been spent on somene you really need. That is all. RVP is a quality player but I don't feel he was the right signing.

1) Because RVP has a pretty dire record of injures and since you are buying him in his prime for a significant amount of money... Your hoping he does not get injued in the net 4 years and performs to the best of his abilities as you have no way to recoup your outlay

2) Pretty sure there are younger, cheaper players out there who could have provided cover for Rooney if that was the aim of this transfer. There are none better than RVP surely but if depth was the problem...

3) Baines is a different matter though... He is not as injury-prone and would tie in nicely with Fabio's development. He can take over the starting spot from Evra next season and then when he starts to decline. Fabio should be ready to assume the starting role. Hence why he is a perfect option

Rules you out of getting quite a few top players who could have plugged those holes well (Fellaini, Moutinho)

Also regarding the Oscar transfer, 99% sure it was in Euro's and not Pounds ... Does not matter though. Its irrelevant to the debate

1) Hasnt picked up any in 18 months. Givens Arsenals record, it could well be argued that their dept made things worse, see Ramsey and Wilshere.

2) Name me a player who can play like Rooney at the highest level who is available for £15m rising to £23m

3) Or, you buy a fullback for around 10m who can cover/compete, and is ready for when Fabio arrives. At £20m its not a must, much as I rate him.

4) Fellaini is not even for sale, Moutinhos release clause is 33m Euros. A top player isnt needed, solid cover ideally is, in both roles.

Not the signing i would have made =/= bad signing. The issue was never about RVP, but about a midfielder.

RVP's signing means the onus on the midfield is not to create, but to supply. More of those type of players around. Means you can use a Fletcher or a Anderson/Powell/etc as opposed to a Modric

For reported 15M plus 7Million we can't a better player. Player of RVP quality for around 20 million? Yes please, in the world where unproven players in some south american league cost 45Million Euro, RVP signing is a bargain. He had only one year left on his contract but looking at what he brings to the team couldn't have signed better striker for that money.

Injury record? Yes but risky but he was not injured for last 18 months. If injured we have Welbeck, Kagawa, Hernandez to play with Rooney, if not then RVP will play with Rooney.

Also like Mike said couldn't have got better player as a cover of Rooney. Now at least if Rooney is injured we don't have goal scoring problems.

Van Persie transfer completed

Robin van Persie has completed his medical, agreed personal terms and signed for Manchester United on a four-year contract until June 2016.

The 29 year-old Dutch striker joins the club in time for the start of the 2012/13 Premier League season.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Robin is a world-class striker with a proven record in England and in European football. His talents need no introduction to our fans – he has scored a number of goals against us in some classic battles with his former club. His movement, finishing and all-round ability are outstanding.”

Robin van Persie said: “It’s an honour to sign for Manchester United. I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers, bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for the biggest trophies in the game. I can’t wait to get started.”

Just been reading this, and something coming on SSN about in min aswell. Roll on monday night cant wait, will be interesting hearing neville talking about it on MNF.

Yeah he is eligible to play the game, had we not registered him before 12 then he would have been ineligible.

Any idea whether he will be attending press conference with SAF?
