The Manchester United Thread

Yes, Ok. First game of the season and we lost it. Thats not that important. What is important is the way we lost. Yet again, we lost midfield battle with strong tall player. My question is:
-Even if we had Ferdinand as CD and Carrick in the middle, would that change something ? Would Carrick stop Fellaini from winning all those headers ? Can Carrick outsmart Fellaini because he can't cope with his strength ? Would Ferdinand stop him ?

The only midfielder we could get who would be an aerial threat to Fellaini, is Fellaini. Calm your ****.

Fellaini's not the point. Every team needs to have strong midfielder. If he's really tall, that's a bonus. Look at Barcelona, Real, Bayern, Juventus...
So, point is, we lack midfield steel, someone who can muscle players off the ball.

Eh, I think the point was that even if you don't win the aerial battle, someone to actually get near the winner of the ball and to challenge him makes playing the long ball up to him so much harder. Jan Koller once said that putting a big man on him may not have stopped him getting a header on target, but it made it so much harder to score.

hey hey, you guys don't need a cm at all.

Wasn't really the issue today, Fellaini was winning balls against everyone. Vidic was the only one could have competed and he was well off the pace. Missed Smalling's aerial ability badly.

I love how Fellaini turned from "overrated" to "monster" overnight.

Only the ignorant called him overrated.

No one complained we needed a midfielder who was overpoweringly strong when our midfield consisted of Scholes, Carrick, Anderson, Fletcher, Hargreaves; and we were rolling in trophies by the 'barrow load. Replacing Scholes/covering Carrick is a more pressing concern. A lot rests on Anderson staying fit.

When Stoke play like that its called 'anti-football'??
Well, only morons can call it 'Anti football'. It's a style of play, you are trying to exploit your strengths. I find Barcelonas passing more boring than Stokes 'kick the ball in the air' style.

No, because Fletcher and Hargo made up for not being huge by sheer hard graft. You don't NEED a huge midfielder, it's just an added bonus.

I'll be sure to tell Moyes not to cross the ball into the box if our players are stronger and taller than the opposition from now on.

Exactly. So praying we lose just to sign one is utterly ridiculous. 1 game, 37 games to go - no need to go to panic stations after having our defence consisting of a winger, a CM, a CB who hasn't played in 10 months and a poor Evra dominated by a sensational Fellaini.

I thought our performance was good tonight, I saw positive signs coming from Kagawa and Rooney in particular. Fellaini has and always will be an absolute beast of a midfielder. No need to panic because one the most awkward midfielders in the EPL made Carrick look like a centre midfielder, oh wait :P. It was clear tonight that United are changing their style slightly and that will take time and for me even though we lost what I saw from United tonight was positive :)
