The Manchester United Thread

You need at least 2 players to match Chelsea/City squad for squad. A top class CB and CM. In fact, I think you would probably have a better squad if you got two such players in. Ronaldo is excellent no doubt but if it's a case of either Ronaldo or (Top class CM and CB), I know which one I would pick

Although, knowing Woodward, he will just try get all 3. Watch this space

We dont need another CM with Ronaldo, since Di Maria would stay CM. And it wouldnt come down to a choice between ronaldo and CB and CM. Only position is CB IF the the others done push on in the next year. Club don't need more players, they need to become more of a team first. Ronaldo would slot in like he never left.

Well I see what you are saying (hence the "like" on your post) because Ive been thinking, following last Sunday where eg Strootman would fit in the XI and I know that while he would offer additional solidity but Im not sure I want to lose Ander's creativity. LVG appears to agree that its a cb we need as he recently said that we are not balanced yet. We are better balanced but we re lacking balance in defence. However I do see the wisdom of bringing in a Strootman type player to have variety and also to have a better squad cos Im not comfortable with Ando/Fletcher (who I love)/Fellaini (who I wanted us to buy but now I see how wrong I was) being our back up cm/dms.

More on OZIL who the British tabloids seem to really have it in for (and who imho is class):

'Mesut Ozil is following in the same footsteps as Juan Sebastian Veron...maybe he isn't cut out to play for an English team,' writes Matt Barlow in the Daily Mail.

Or, maybe it would be an idea to play him in his natural position as a No. 10?

Yes. Poor management more than anything! Surely Wenger must see this!?

I a million percent agree, he gets stick for his defending which I seriously do not get, you don't buy a player like Ozil for his ability to mark players and if Arsenal would just bite the bullet and buy a good DM would probably get more out of him too even out of position.

British press do my head in I never read the papers at all, Man Utds transfer window column inches sums up their ineptness, before last week of transfer window United must buy 5-6 world class players then after it shuts sold their soul buying players what utter bollocks.

Looks like ManUtd are playing Cardiff development team today behind closed doors. Not sure who all are playing.

Criticism of Ozil is reaching ridiculous levels, actually. Criticism of Wenger? I agree, he's not at all been upto scratch. I dunno, though, Ozil isn't completely out of position, I think he played in the wings during the WC, but the thing is, he was rested for it, he had a better bunch of players around him and he had a different role. If Wenger is so determined to stick around to placing Ozil on the wings, atleast do it in a way that suits him :\

Not sure about that. Sanchez, Welbeck, Ramsey, Wilshere are not bunch of average players. They are very good to excellent players. You can make excuses like out of positions but not excuses like lack of quality.

Only because Reus got injured though. And he was probably their worst peformer too.

Ozil is just not a wide player - its not that he can't deliver offensively from the wing, its that he has no pace to speak off and stamina of someone twice he's age. Put him on the wing and opposing fullbacks and wingers eat him alive.

Bellerin was horribly exposed all game last night because of Ozil

I'm sorry but Strootman is one of the finest all-round CM's in the world, I'm sure he'd fit in any team pretty much and I'd still deem him a priority, sure for games against smaller teams Herrera, Di Maria and Blind works well. But for bigger games, it's yet to be seen. (Lets not get carried away though, it's only been 1 game, need to see this in like 5 games to establish whether it is working as good as we're making out or not).

Not to mention our depth is still paper thin, especially if one gets injured, we're relying on Fletcher again, who I'm sorry, is a nice bloke n all, but isn't United standard any more.

Nani scored a screamer for Sporting tonight, other than that was pretty poor tbh. On transfers get Strootman in Jan and Hummels,Ronnie and Depay in the summer, aswell as them 2 lads from ajax and that Norweigan lad. Then in windows after that by 1 top class player per window then start investing in younger/youth players with WC potential.

Gk- De Gea,Jhonstone,Milinkovic
FBs- Rafael,Varela,Shaw,Janko
CBs- Jones,Smalling,Evans,Rojo,Hummells,Keane,Blackett
CMs- Herrera,Blind,Strooman,Fletcher,Powell,Rothwell,Pearson
AMCs/AML/Rs- Ronaldo,Mata,Januzaj,Di Maria,Depay,Zaha,Periera,Lingard
STRs- RVP,Rooney,Falcao,Wilson,Henriquez

This is what I would like our squad to look like start of next season with CL think it will be good enough to cover all comps and give players plenty game time. Also gives good options for different formations.

Yet the trio you mention are big game players. Especially Herrera and certainly Di Maria.

Blind, Herrera, Di Maria is a very strong midfield by all accounts. If you want to add more to that, you add around it (defence and attack)

Blind was solid for the whole WC, Di Maria won Madrid the CL and Herrera bossed the likes of Barca every time he played them.

After first Arsenal and now City got absolutely murdered by Dortmund's and Bayern's backup squads, I'd say it would take **** of a lot more then Herrera/Blind/Di Maria to seriously compete in CL again.
