The Manchester United Thread

Also that Jones could be on bench and Di Maria to face late fitness test end of week. 50/50 to start but will be on bench otherwise.

Signing a defender puts futures at risk at Manchester United - My piece on the consequences of signing a CB reddevilarmada.com/2014/12/10/signing-defender-puts-futures-risk-manchester-united/ …

I'm not too sure I get the article, mate.. The headline reads that a new signing puts futures at risk, but the content indicates that we need a signing because our current crop aren't good enough..

The article could point towards Blackett and McNair, but no mention is made of them but in passing.. (unless I missed a paragraph or page)

The headline is probably incorrect?

Signing a new defender puts them all at risk for multiple reasons i.e. not good enough, interest from clubs, contracts etc.. While they've also got pros to being at the club i.e. experience, solidity, age/potential etc..

It's just balancing out that if we sign a new defender (which Van Gaal has now said we won't), one of them is likely to leave and that's why.

Any argument against signing a cb becomes silly and pointless when our main three are made of paper. I doubt we'll have a spell this season when all three are fit.

If smalling is fit one or both of the others will out etc etc rinse and repeat.

I do believe that we do need maybe one new experienced international central defender to help the younger ones through this sticky period of injuries, lack form & confidence, it's a shame that lost Vidic at the end of last season. But also doesn't help not having many options at right/left fullback/wingback positions either, Valencia and Young not really suitable are they. The problem is still midfield, because when teams boss the midfield, the defence isn't put under that much pressure, but we do seem to put on our defence under massive pressure at the moment, because we can not keeping ball enough i.e. possession. So the younger guys in defence can blossom when not under so much pressure. I can't understand why we are getting so any injures in defence. We all most be thankful to David de Gea top form this season, also it's promising that we are third in the league playing so badly, so when LVG gets the form right with team who knows where he can take us, maybe even challenge for the title this season. I hate to give Sir Alex the blame, maybe in later seasons of his reign he didn't blood enough youngsters or given them a longer run in the team to give them more experience. For example recalling Scholes out of retirement & Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra & Giggs having long runs in the team when fit and playing them in important matches because they more reliable, more specially at the back. And of course David Moyes didn't help situation with knocking the confidence out of our team.

Ps Sir Alex did use to plan year to two years ahead with his squad, by replacing players before their end was up at United, I'm sure he didn't plan for the season ahead before David Moyes reign started. That why we had lots of aging players and youngsters that hadn't been regulars in the first team. If you look back the signings he made before his announcement of retirement, for example Robin van Persie wasn't youngster and all others were youngsters like Zaha, Powell & Henrique etc. So I believe Sir Alex took his eye off the ball least two seasons ago before retirement. As we all know that you recruit new players when you at your strongest, like winning the league title.

Time for my new weekly pessimistic predictions.

We won't win on sunday imo, LVG will go with the 3 at the back and carrick will be on of them thus taking away our ability to control the midfield and gerrard/henderson will have fantastic games. Di Maria or rafael won't start and we will lack pace in the counter.

United 2-2 Liverpool with goals from mata, rvp, sterling and a gerrard peno. Sending off for fellaini or evans.

Don't think we will play 3 at the back Now Rafa and Jones are fit. Not worried about there CM tbh, think we will control the game with a 2-0 win. Di Maria will start as LVG said he would only miss the Southampton game and be fit after that.

Jones isn't fit. He's only just started training again. No chance he'll play. I'll be surprised if he's even on the bench to be honest. I think we'll go with the diamond because we're at home. Evans and Rojo at CB, Carrick holding with Fellaini and Herrera. Wouldn't be surprised to see Mata dropped so that we get a bit more pace in the side, whether it be Falcao or Januzaj.

Yeah would think the diamond good shout. Would swap Mata for Di Maria.

Yeah the expecting jones to come straight in is a bit odd tbh, i can't see him playing at the weekend or the game after that.

Louis van Gaal tells #MUTV that Angel Di Maria is unavailable for Sunday's game vs Liverpool but says #mufc's injury situation is improving.
The boss adds that Chris Smalling is out for only two weeks

Wrapping up on injuries, the boss added: "Now I have only four players injured, so that’s better than ever I believe! Only Shaw, Smalling, Di Maria and Blind [are injured]."

Asked if Falcao could be involved on Sunday, he said: "Yes. He could make a return."

Asked if his players are aware of what beating Liverpool means to United in terms of the rivalry, van Gaal said he has the perfect assistant manager to get that message across: "I have an assistant manager in Ryan Giggs, and he presented an analysis of Liverpool and he did it in a marvellous way, so I’m very pleased."

Di Maria out was obvious, was it ever in question he'd suddenly be fully fit for sunday?

Shaw is still the big one, rather have him fit.
