Simon Grayson - Shock Sacking
Last Updated: 20:00 Monday 9 July 2009
Official: Grayson sacked as Leeds boss and in comes Casey
The surprise dismissal of Leeds United manager was announced by the club chairman Ken Bates at 2 p.m. this afternoon. Grayson is said to be in disbelief after he lead the side to promotion as they finished 2nd in League one last season. The ex white's manager was said to had lost the faith of his fans and with this in mind Bates decided it was time for a new leader as they set their sights on stepping closer to rejoining the big boys.
Soon after the announcement from Bates the club released a statement on the club's website that Simon Casey would be the new man to take the reins. Casey is well respected in the football world and has been tipped by many as one to watch being a young manager with huge potential.Casey then went on to say,
" I'm delighted to be here, i will strive to get us promoted this season and put the club back were it belongs. It may be a bold statement be i ensure we will gain promotion and then i will drive the club forward in order to emulate the glory days of Don Revie."
For younger readers and for those who haven't heard of Revie here is a brief section at what he achieved for the club. In March 1961 the club appointed Don Revie as manager. His stewardship began in adverse circumstances; the club was in financial difficulty[5] and in 1961–62 only a win in the final game of the season saved the club from relegation to Division Three. Revie turned the team around, winning promotion to the First Division in 1963–64. Between 1965 and 1974, Revie's Leeds never finished outside of the top four, won two League Championships (1968–69 and 1973–74), the FA Cup (1972), the League Cup (1968) and two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups (1968 and 1971).
Set against the success was an unenvied record of second places; during the same period Leeds were runners up in the League five times, losing finalists in the FA Cup three times, runners up in the Fairs Cup once, and losing 1-0 to AC Milan in the European Cup Winners Cup final. Revie's last season at Elland Road was in 1974, and he left Leeds to take up the role of managing the English national team.
Bates has been rumoured to have given the new manager around £5m in order to secure promotion from the Championship. With a strong side and the money to back it could it be back to back promotions for the could?.
