PAPISS Cisse has come to the rescue of a Tyneside grass roots football club.
When Demba Ba’s deal with Chelsea was confirmed last week, the children in the Under-11s team at Grainger Park Boys’ Club in Newcastle’s West End were left gutted.
Not only had the Toon lost a star striker, but the children’s club was left facing playing the rest of the season with strips emblazoned with the Senegalese’s name.
But as news of the upset reached Newcastle United, the club came forward with the support of Papiss Cisse and offered to donate a new kit to the team.
Nicola McCabe, club secretary at Grainger Park, said: “Someone from Newcastle United just rang me up and said the club had seen the story in the paper and they would like to step in and replace the strips.
“They’d spoken to Papiss Cisse and he said he was very excited to be involved and was happy to have his name on the kits.
“He is also going to come and meet the kids and present them with the strips.”
The Under-11s were given the original Demba Ba strips by the Newcastle United Foundation and they were sponsored by Ba, meaning his name was printed on the arm of each shirt. The youngsters welcomed the donation with open arms last year, but said the pleasure subsided since news of Ba’s departure broke.
Now, instead of having to find funding to buy new strips, the team will soon be sporting their Cisse-branded shirts as well as finding a new home for the old ones.
Nicola said: “The kids will be so excited to meet Cisse.
“We’re also going to give the old strips to him so he can send them back to his country for children over there to use."
